    http://kroq.radio.com/media/audio-channel/mark-hoppus-talks-enema-state-20th-anniversary

Not sure if this got posted already or not, but Mark was on kroq yesterday.

Some key takeaways other that talking about the 20th Anniversary of EOTS are:

    - Mark was recently on the phone with head of the label about the release date of the album. Announcement of that is forthcoming
    - They are getting final mixes of the songs now
    - Half the album is mastered
    - The rumor that they are making plans to reunite with Tom is inaccurate.

Similar story as a lot of people where I started my fandom after hearing WMAA? on the radio when I was like 9. I had been familiar with Dammit before that though thanks to my older brother, but I think I was too young to actually “like” music at that time. I’m pretty sure Enema was the first actual album I ever bought so that’s crazy to think about.

I first heard What's My Age Again when I was around 3 or 4 while my aunt was babysitting, I got put in one of the longest time outs I can remember after I started running around the house, and tried going outside naked.

    GIANT WALL OF TEXT INCOMING.

Ugh I already typed this out then lost it doing research to back up some claims. Here we go. Take 2:

I know where and why I bought enema, but I don’t remember exactly when. It was the summer after my freshman year in high school. I went on vacation with my mom to state line, Nevada (between LA and Vegas.) my mom and I would do this a lot because the arcades were awesome and she could gamble. I’d play with some of her winnings and we did this every few months for YEARS. I knew those Vegas and state line hotels and arcades like the back of my hand. This particular summer I was more interested in shopping at the outlet mall there (high school didn’t have a dress code and I wasn’t one of the cool kids) and riding the rides. I met a girl while riding the rides that was wearing a blink shirt.

I knew who blink was from the Can’t Hardly Wait soundtrack, but the more I think about it, I may have also owned dude ranch. I did the 12 CDs for a penny thing I’m guessing late 98/ early 99 and got DR along with a Follow The Leader, 3 dollar bill Y’all, that kid rock album with bawitaba, ORGY, Lit, maybe some soundtracks, etc. I was a FAN but this was the first time I ever liked anything. I didn’t know albums CAME OUT.

I must have, at the time of the Vegas trip, been familiar with the WMAA video, I just do not recall. My mom keeps meticulous records of where and when she spends her money so I actually reached out to her a couple years ago to see if she had a record of exactly when that trip was. She remembered the trip but didn’t have records - or at least didn’t wanna share the date for some reason.

Anyway, I crushed on the girl for the weekend, bought enema at whatever music store they had at that outlet mall, and opened it in the back of the van on the way home to play in my discman. I let it repeat and repeat and repeat. I was HOOKED.

I remember where I was the first time I heard every blink record, but this one was so special for some reason. I guess with DR, I already knew dammit and Josie so buying the full record didn’t feel like a huge deal? I kinda knew what I was getting and I of course loved it. Even started teaching myself songs like Dick Lips and Dammit on the only instrument I knew at the time - piano. But no one around me cared about anything but skateboarding; we just never talked about or anticipated albums coming out. They would just *be around* the next time you’d go to the music store.

Actually, I think that’s how I found enema. I would (and STILL do) walk the aisles of music stores at that time to see what albums there were. I don’t think Cheshire Cat was repressed yet (maybe it was, but I’ll get to that) so I would always just see dude ranch and, what I kick myself for missing out on now, the lemmings CD single, dammit and Josie CD singles, WMAA CD singles, etc. and this one day there was something new and it had WMAA on it. I wish the memory were more clear. It was just so magical.

I remember toward the end of that freshman year, what must have been weeks before enema came out, I was JUST starting to find what I *thought* could be “myself” and friends that would take me thru high school. This kid I’d befriended knew I loved blink, but, unbeknownst to me, trolled me hard and I will never forget it. He gave me a cassette of a “new song” he “wrote and recorded” with his GF’s dad over the weekend. I popped in the tape and it was SO GOOD! I listened to that tape over and over. Months later, enema was out and all of a sudden Buddha and CC get re-presses and became more easily available. So I buy them and start with Buddha. Awesome. CC is next and I get SO EMBARRASSED when “wasting time” comes on because it’s the fucking song that kid put on a tape for me. I was not only embarrassed, but HURT because, while funny to him, I trusted and believed him when he said he wrote that song. That feeling SUCKED. I was young and didn’t know any better. Who does that to someone and is sincere about it?

I’ve never recounted this story as thoroughly as i have here. 20 years spent thinking of how that trip changed everything for me. I went from a huge blink fan to over the moon FANATIC. I’m jealous about how well some others here remember the details of the day it came out - I was just so sheltered and naive and just wasn’t aware.

But that’s one of the things that makes this site mean so much to me. I feel so much less alone and that no one here would have trolled me like that kid. You’d all have been right there with me, and that’s nice to feel that sense of camaraderie.

Thanks for sharing. I agree with you about this site. Even though blink was popular while I was in high school they still weren’t the cool band to like like Limp Bizkit or Dave Matthews Band was for example. I remember the yearbook teacher tried to talk me out of a lyric from blink being my senior quote because I would be embarrassed I quoted them instead of someone insightful when I look back at it in 20 years (nope still not embarrassed by my choice screw someone like Socrates right?). I only had a handful of friends that liked them so I didn’t have a lot of people to talk about them with. Even today I only have two friends that still like/listen to them but they are nowhere bear the fandom I am. I’m glad there’s a place where I can talk about blink (even if we tend to talk in circles/cycles) and I’ve made some good friends here as well. So thank you all for being here sharing your stories/views/opinions, even if we don’t always agree or the times I want to take my toaster in the bath because of the Tom back to blink talk, it’s still fun for me to be here.

The idea Limp Bizkit were the "cool" band to like is hilarious to me. (Maybe Dave Matthews too but I've never heard one of their songs and only know of them via cultural osmosis of people making fun of them!)

I live in Connecticut which has a big Yankee fan base. The number of kids at my high school that wore red Yankee hats backwards because of Fred Durst was insane. Dave Matthews had a really big following in CT too, especially with the girls.

I remember once in college a kid walked past our group of friends and he was wearing a backwards red hat and everyone started yelling DURST! DURST! at him hahaha. It was probably mean but it was fucking hilarious at the time. (And now!) This was UK "college" when we were 16 though no university so it might excuse SOME immaturity haha.

I am embarrassed to admit that I owned and wore a red Yankees cap like Fred Durst until like, 2001. I was trying to figure out who I was, and sadly, I had to endure a nu-metal phase since it was 1999-2001.

It was a weird time. Switching between modeling my style off of Mark or Durst....or maybe even the lead singer of Orgy :chin:
