I hope the next record is more like Shelter. Kodama was cool but I was really hoping Neige would keep going down the shoegaze/dream pop path he took on Shelter.

And when are we getting wildhund from Lantlos? Starting to think it’s never getting finished.

a 2018 release I didn't pay attention to until a coworker wore one of their shirts today. Stoner/sludge FFO of Intronaut/when Mastodon was good:

Also jammed this classic today at work. Kreator's first 5 albums are amazing, and this one is probably my favorite:

This is a band I discovered last year. Metalcore from Vietnam in the vein of Architects, djent, etc.

Also, Lee McKinney from Born of Osiris on drums! The guy is extremely talented.

@theagentcoma is just speaking the truth that the world needs to hear in this post-Crack the Skye world.

I'm cautiously optimistic. I'd like to see them further explore some of the heavier parts of Sorceress, but I won't get my hopes up, despite Mikael describing the new music as "twisted." Still, new Opeth is new Opeth.

I agree that Mastodon was a filthier heavier beast of a band in the early days, but they've certainly don't suck now.

I agree. I think have evolved into what they are now very nicely. I think they are a great gateway into doom and stoner metal.

Their new music isn't bad objectively from a talent perspective, but it's just sterile in comparison to their first three albums + most of Crack the Skye to me. Comparatively, Leviathan still probably cracks my all time top 10 favorite album list. The riffs and sludginess on that never get old.

Love these videos. I actually started laughing out loud when Fehn starts hitting the keg.

Yes, most everyone will say that Crack the Skye or Leviathan is their favorite but calling their new music “sterile” is a bit much. It’s far better than most hard rock out there and good for them for being able to do what they love.

Sterile probably was a bit hyperbolic of a word choice there, but I still stand behind the sentiment of what I said regarding my own personal viewpoint - new Mastodon is just boring to me compared to their older stuff. I wouldn't even put their new music pretty high on the pantheon of current hard rock bands. There's a lot better stuff out there IMO depending on your definition of hard rock ranging from stuff like White Reaper and Sheer Mag to Monolord and Windhand. /end opinion

That also wasn't meant to be taken as a slight towards the dudes. I'm happy they've received continued popularity of the years because they seem like generally good dudes minus Brent's occasional outbursts over the years. Like I said, I just don't like their new material.

The only Mastodon I don’t care much for is The Hunter and it’s still a decent record

Blood Mountain was the perfect medium to me. A balance between the older sludge-y heavier stuff and the newer more accessible, catchier stuff.

When I want to listen to Mastodon 50% of the time I put on Remission, 30% Leviathan, 15% Blood Mountain, 5% Crack the Skye... Ive never listened to the other Mastodon albums besides a few times each on the years they came out. I see why people like it, but it's never grabbed me besides a song here and there.

I didn't say they suck, but I don't think they've released anything great since Crack the Skye.

Leviathan is such a goddamn masterpiece. Like you said, the newer stuff is not for me but I'm happy for them. I'm especially fond of their Game of Thrones cameos.
