I think this is really turning out to be a flop (besides being bad) - no major publication really reviewed the track and outside of his hashtags / retweets there isn’t really any talk of the song at all. If it was supposed to be a business savvy attempt at going viral it doesn’t feel like it worked at all.

It's Ed Sheeran featuring Chance, not the other way around

I didn’t even make it through this song. The complete opposite of what I want from him. Not gonna say I’m surprised by the song though

It’s such a shame because Acid Rap and (especially) Coloring Book are genuinely great, creative, and interesting projects.

Yeah I feel like a lot of people were tricked into thinking he's great early on

  10. Maybevictor

    @maybevictor Prestigious

I don’t think anyone was tricked, I think he was legitimately great. Even 10 day was super promising and creative for someone his age. He has a lot of talent and an ear for melody, as well as a pretty good secret weapon in the form of the SoX crew.

I think now that his interests, personality, and supporting crew changed, his music suffered as a result of it, but the talent is still there.

Again, why the fuck are we throwing a funeral for the dude before the tape even comes out? I'm all for shitting on it when it's actually out and garbage, but I don't get the whole "Man I'm sad that I don't like him anymore" schtick before we even see a final project. Y'all were waiting with bated breath for TLOP and Ye while Kanye went on his MAGA tour but you're ready to write Chance off over a single and a snippet on Twitter???? I don't get it.

    EDIT:
And have we gotten official word that Grocieries is the legit lead single from the new tape? I saw someone post that Beats phrased it as such, but is there any confirmation in writing?
    EDIT AGAIN:

Okay this lines up. Says the album is "Dance-y" and this is a taste of one type of dancing.

The whole dance inspired thing makes me think we are about to get a DJ Khaled style jukebox album, and not in the same cohesive way as Coloring Book.

Even if I’m throwing an (admittedly early) funeral for this album I will still be ready to be surprised based on his talent and will continue checking out new music because I think he has enough good material to bounce back from a dud.

I've slowly soured on Chance in the years following Coloring Book, so I'm not taking like a sharp turn here, but all indications are for a lower quality album and a big disappointment.

I'd love to be surprised, and I'm sure whatever it is he'll have shining moments, but for the most part I'm off the bandwagon here.

I think he’s done a few questionable things, like searching that guy out on Twitter who said something negative about his proposal and some of the political stuff he said.

But since CB, he’s had great features, like “Ultralight Beam” and some mid-level loosies. The worst thing he’s done was that awful DJ Khaled song where he spells and “Groceries.” I’m not ready to say he’s about to say he’s taking a Lupe Fiasco-sized dump just yet.

Lupe Fiasco’s most recent album is better than anything Chance has or will ever put out

Lupe’s recovered from falling off a cliff. But let’s not pretend he didn’t have a giant drop in quality from “The Cool” to “Lasers.”

Lasers still had All Black Everything, even at his worst Lupe still shines. I blame his label for that anyway.

Lasers wasn't Lupe's fault. Anyone that thinks Lupe has fallen off (talent-wise, obviously he has mainstream-wise) needs to listen to his last two albums. DROGAS Wave was my second favorite album of 2018

Coloring Book came after the feature on Ultralight Beam.

I’ll admit I’m a little worried about this release but I think it’ll be enjoyable. The song released is fun and catchy even if the music isn’t up to the standard of quality I have come to expect from him.

Checked the charting for this so far:

Apple Music: #27 as of this morning
iTunes: not even in top 200, peaked at #95 for two days after release and dropped out
Spotify: doesn’t seem to be on their top 200 or top 50 at all

When he did that terrible Doritos commercial, and then all his tweets....that’s when I started to sour on him.

Tho I’m still excited to listen to the album

His white supremacy endorsing Kanye tweets were a big turn. Yeah he apologized but he spread that bulllshit so willingly.

Not getting all the Chance hate all of a sudden. At all. He’s 26, only two years removed from a Grammy win, and he hasn’t even released a proper follow up to Coloring Book yet.

I don't get why people are confused or bent out of shape about the change in opinion on him. Lots of people weren't into the string of loosies last year, this single is not very good, plus we've learned more about his personality/character, which I find very unappealing.

I do think it's silly to write him off completely at this point (but whoever wants to is free to and justified in doing so) but my anticipation for any future music is significantly muted compared to where it would have been after Acid Rap up to shortly after Coloring Book.

This is a valid criticism and one I agree with. I soured on him pretty significantly after that, but have faith in his statement that he will promote change through action/his music
