what an absolutely stunning, gorgeous album. the back to back closing of rylan and light years (well, with the underwater interlude in between) just wrecked me.

Such an outstanding album. I was always scared that this was going to recoil from some of the impulses they went through with on Sleep Well Beast, sinking back into the more traditional The National sound of High Violet and Trouble Will Find Me. Obviously this would have been fine, both albums are incredible, but after hearing what they could with their sound on Sleep Well Beast, I think they set a new bar for what the band could be. I think the singles really undersold how weird some of this is. I was especially floored by the stretch from the title track to Dust Swirls in the Wind. Also particularly fond of Oblivions and Rylan.

    What a band.

I really love the energy and harmonies on Where Is Her Head. Does anyone know who the most prominent female voice on the track is?

Album is, of course, incredible. I love how they’ve pushed their sound. This is probably the best songwriting of their career. The only song I’m not wild about the first listen through is Hey Rosey. Where Is Her Head reminds me of a Broken Social Scene track, Not in Kansas is obviously a standout, and I’m obsessed with Lisa Hannigan’s lead vocals on Quiet Light and So Far So Fast. Probably my pick for the best catalogue of any American rock band, at this point.

^ that song is insane. it's like I'm Your Man-era Cohen going for it over a Bon Iver song. or something

Gonna give this a spin once it comes out on streaming services. In the past I couldn't get into the band's music because Matt's distinct baritone threw me off so much (not sure why, but it did), but I always hear such great things about their discography that I think they warrant another look.
