So AVA was playing a show in Lowell, MA at the Tsongas Arena with .... Weezer? I think. It was Sept. 2008 around the time of Travis's plane crash. In fact, the day my brothers met the band was ON the day of the crash if I recall it right. The band was staying at the Double Tree Hotel (which has since been torn down cause it so gross and turned into UML college buildings) and it just so happens my oldest brother worked at the restaurant in the hotel.

My brother made damn sure he was working that day when they were there cause like .... Tom DeLonge is fucking there. So while working the band came down and was in the restaurant just eating and chilling. My brother was SO nervous to go up and bother them, but also super star struck. A co-worker of his was sick of listening to him talk about it so she literally went right up to the band and told them "hey my co-worker is a huge fan and is super nervous to say hi" and I think it was Tom who said "tell him I need a water." So he ended up meeting them and ended up chatting with them for a while. He's good with small talk so it turned to be super casual and cool.

Keep in mind what is going on with Travis so I think Tom was sort of just distracted and needed just anything, he asked my brother if there was any way he could get him weed. Now my brother being 17-18 in a suburban town ... yeah literally any of his friends could get some. But he was working. So he called my other brother and pretty much said "Hey ... Tom needs me to get him weed. Can you pick it up?" So my other brother went and grabbed it from my oldest brother's friend and delivered it to the hotel. They got photos and all met the band.

AND I WASN'T FUCKING INFORMED. I was in 7th grade so I was probably doing dumb shit like "walking to McDonalds" with my friends and wasn't invited. I was listening to blink at the age of 6 and blink/AVA meant a huge deal to me ... so I'm still pissed to this day hahaha

PS: later that night Tom ordered room service and my brother delivered it and he opened the door in his pajamas and started singing a song with my brother's name in it haha. Such a cool overall scenario.

“Rebel Girl is a space-age love song that combines my enduring obsession for New Wave, pop punk and anthemic rock and roll music"

Ahhh yes, exactly how I would describe it ...

I love this story, thank you for sharing it! I'm sorry you didn't get to personally meet Tom though!

You should have your brothers buy you the meet and greet to make up for it

That’d be a great piece to the band. He’d bring a lot to the table!

    Felt good to read this:

“After my kids, music has and will always be the most important thing in my life,” says DeLonge. “It’s given me everything – every opportunity and every relationship I have. There is no stronger art form than rock ‘n’ roll to deliver a galvanizing message and at the end of the day, change lives.”

Dude gets around like crazy. Patrick Stump's band, touring production of Dear Evan Hansen, and did The Greatest Showman too

I listened to about half of Rebel Girl before I put on Valkyrie Missile and listened to We Don't Need to Whisper in its entirety. I wish I could into it, but Tom's vocals just don't deliver for me anymore. As he's gotten older, the thinness of his voice gets more and more exposed as he attempts to add more depth to it. It's pitchy as hell and sounds like he has 3 different accents.
    Shame.

well, gotta give it to the guy. i have the feeling that he woke up one day and it finally dawned on him that he wasn't an artist anymore. didn't think that realization would, or could, come to him.

the pitch to rise must've gone along the lines of, "well my band has gone to shit but i wanna get it back together and reignite my passion for music, second only to my passion for space crap. and hey, i'm tom delonge. get a team behind me and i'll definitely sell you some records.... oh you want me to tour? blahh, fine."

Song is still enjoyable after a few listens. Hope there’s more guitar-driven stuff on the album.

The way he finishes off lines on the more recent releases just annoys me. I def had no problem with his vocals on the first couple albums

I dig the sound (do we know if Matt is back in the band too?) but Toms voice is hit and miss in the song unfortunately for me.

Doesn't seem like Matt Wachter is involved. This YouTube video credits him in the description, but it also says "Auto-generated by YouTube." He hasn't been mentioned anywhere else at all.

Matt Rubano (ex-Taking Back Sunday, and touring for All-American Rejects/Patrick Stump/etc.) is playing bass for them on tour.

Can totally see this new song on the soundtrack of a new coming of age movie. Something those Netflix originals or Love, Simon.
