Isla Vista Worship also recently released an album.

 

Never listened to Kings Kaleidoscope before, but I'm digging the new album. Is their older stuff similar?

 

Wait what? I never heard about that! I’d definitely check it out

 

If it was gonna be more in the vein of their late 90's work this would be amazing, but the fact they churn out generic worship music now this will probably be a let down.

 

I'd say that this is a natural evolution / combination of Beyond Control and The Beauty Between (the latter was more a mixtape vibe with Braille, Andy Mineo, Propaganda etc. being guest vocalists). I think you can kind of hear the threads of this newer sound and where they were beginning to go in their full length Becoming Who We Are (which, to be honest, is still my favourite), but if you like this sound I'd start with the last two releases.

 

Yeah, feel like it was sort of shadow dropped haha. It's crazy how big they are now. They posted their Spotify numbers at the end of the year and they were pretty impressive...

Eh, I've enjoyed the new songs. More than any Tait-led albums. Always enjoy Furler's voice/writing.

 

I remember being so pumped for Tait-led Newsboys. I was never an active Newsboys fan (even though I probably could've been), but the few songs I loved here & there were dope, & Tait's first solo album ruled. The intersection between those styles seemed like it'd make really good Christian pop. Then, they decided to go in a different youth-group-centric direction that... just didn't really do much for me.

From what I've heard, this new album is gonna be the one I wanted way back then. Peter Furler, Phil Joel, & Michael Tait's voices (both literally & creatively) united into one delightful, feel good pop rock album. Plus... Kevin Max is featured on one of the songs, according to the track listing.

On a loosely related note, I hate that, when I watch Christian music related videos on YouTube, they're almost always accompanied by awful PureFlix ads.

 

I was a HUGE Newsboys fan back in the day, still love a lot of the albums, but yeah Tait brought them in a direction I just wasn't a fan of...hopefully this one delivers.

 

I asked my friend what he thought of the new King’s album and he said, “It’s good, but it just sounds like another King’s album.”

 

Sorry friends, I’ve struggled to get into it as well. It’s sadly not really my thing and would have to agree with your friend - they’ve taken everything from Beyond Control and add a bit more joy and colour. It’s exactly what I expected - not to say that it’s done badly, it’s a very mature and competent release - it’s just not my usual cup of tea and the couple of listens I have had haven’t made me want to return over and over.

 

I think The Rush is the best part of the album, but I’ve been listening to that for months already.

It’s funny though. KK really is an acquired taste. They don’t fall into my typical genre enjoyment either. I get why they are hit and miss for a lot of people and some just appreciate them.

 

Yes. I can appreciate that Chad is a huge talent but it’s just not something that makes me want to return to. I loved Becoming Who We Are and enjoyed Beyond Control for what it was. This one isn’t for me at the moment!

 

I feel like, for the entire time that I've known of Kings Kaleidoscope (since like 2011 or 2012, when I though Mark Driscoll was cool *shudder*), I've never been able to really get into 'em. "Felix Culpa" is a cool song, & their hip hop collaborations are pretty cool, but they've never had an album or even EP that I'm fully into.

Not sure if it's the songwriting or the vocal style or the production or what. Always a lot to like about the instrumentation. Oh well. Good for them for doing what they love & having a loyal fanbase for it.

 

What's fascinating is how many people I know who don't like them, but no one discredits how good they are. And I know exactly what they mean. But I can't put a finger on why that's the case. If that makes sense.

 

See, literally everyone who likes alternative Christian music in churches where I live love them. I don't know many who say "this isn't for me!" It's like the trendy thing here for some reason.

Makes sense what you're saying - they're musically competent but their style isn't always the most palatable? There's been a quirkiness to their last two full lengths which definitely distinguishes them from others, but it might be that which polarises some people.

 

New Citizens song. Album called 'Fear' is out on the 3rd May so not long at all.

 

I want more bands like Kings Kaleidoscope. IMO there’s a huge void of bands who write music that’s distinctly worship music (as opposed to Christians writing alternative music) that also isn’t written in the style of and for the format of being covered by praise bands and sung in the 3 songs before the pastor comes on to preach

Haven't listen to 'em in like five years. Didn't know they went back to just Citizens, lol. "Made Alive" was such a jam.

I actually really like this song, more than I would've expected. Dig the energy, & dig the vocals.

 

Anyways, happy Easter, y'all. Woke up earlier than needed or intended, but that just means I can listen to some of my favorite Easter-y songs w/ some tea.
