I'm also not confident in this government (not just Trump's America but also our centrist Democrats etc) being the ones to decriminalize prostitution in a way that will actually help all women.

 

I guess my question is: at what point can you tell the difference? What's stopping a trafficker from just creating a pseudo-"sex shop" and treating it like a legit business?

 

I am not as informed on it as id like but I do have a friend that has been a sex worker and activist for a long time and she claims the general consensus among sex workers is that decriminalization is what they want, not legalization. I wish I knew more to be able to properly explain why but yeah. I trust her lol

 

FWIW I'm not against legalization of prostitution, I just don't know these things and ask because I think those are the questions that'll need to be asked when legislation is being drawn up for something like legalization of prostitution so that women are very well protected

There would have to be strong regulation in place to protect against forced prostitution or trafficking but I believe in history legalizing things has generally speaking made them safer.

 

I've also had the discussion with my wife (because we openly have those nuanced conversations) and she's actually against it (not for nefarious reasons) and while I can't recall her exact reasoning it was really sound reasoning that I'm certainly open to (especially given her expertise on the legal/political front)

Idk I just wanna listen to women over me and other men on something that impacts them so much more than me but everything seems mixed

I think that necessary regulation is why many sex workers don’t want the govt involved.

But yeah decrim would be safer because it would alleviate the catch 22 that sex workers find themselves in when abused or taken advantage of. Right now they can’t report any kind of abuse bc they will just be arrested. So being able to report without being arrested would be a HUGE HUGE HUGE help to help rid the industry of the rampant abuse

 

Yeah there needs to be a committee deciding this stuff with the people involved being involved in the committee

Also please everyone don't take anything I say about that to be me speaking for Laura on this hahaha I know there's TONS of nuance and I don't want me being like "SHE SAID SHE'S AGAINST IT" to be her taking a stance on it because there may have been other specifics to the conversation we were having etc etc

I suppose that’s a possibility. Slim, but a possibility. But the big difference here is that in a scenario where prostitution is legal the prostitute can go to the authorities without fear of repercussion. They can’t do that right now.

It’s just safer for them in nearly every way

 

Not anywhere in the US. Only Nevada(and it’s legalized there)

I just feel like it always starts as "it's such a simple improvement we can make" and then I'm like "okay if it's that simple I'm for it!" and then it's like "well it's actually not so simple" and I just cannot for the life of me figure out what the actual scope of this is and until that can be clearly defined I don't know how to take a hard stance hahaha
