I'm still using my panasonic 1080p plasma I bought the day before the ps4 launched. I won't upgrade my tv until the next gen comes out so they can take their time but i'll be genuinely shocked if it doesn't start next year.

 

yeah my TV is 7 years old and other than one little issue it runs like a champ. the HDMI ports are starting to give out though, gotta stop unplugging stuff ever

 

i am with moose where I don't see next generation until 2021 or 2022.

 

You gotta get one of those HDMI ports that the Civic's use, true 24k gaming.

 

Bought Anthem on day one and think I'm on the few to experience a handful of issues. The game plays perfectly fine for me.

 

Sony and Microsoft gotta figure out how they will compete with Switch, I cant see it being next year

 

it seems to me Microsoft’s answer to Nintendo is to embrace them and position an environment where Xbox is the go-to “main” console in the home and the Switch is the secondary. i also would not be shocked to see a line of branded tablets to come out and maybe ship with an Xbox controller when and if Game Pass enters full streaming, an app for Smart TVs ala PS now etc. i think Microsoft will focus on more traditional hardware while prioritizing getting Game Pass subs out and accessible to anyone with a screen.

no clue what Sony will do, but it seems like they’re the most likely to pivot

 

Sony will straight up copy the Switch they got no shame they want to stay relevant

 

give me a Nintendo/Microsoft collab that gets me Xbox molded Joycons

 

Give me all the hybrids

 

Just give me a fucking super fan-service Halo game that I can play online on my Switch and make Switch online not suck as much as it does because Microsoft is now involved and they know how online should be.

I don't think Microsoft or Sony is interested in competing with Nintendo. Nintendo has kind of settled into its own place in the industry where it's the main console for a number of people but is the secondary console for a ton of people. For every generation since the GameCube, I've always purchased a Nintendo console in addition to one or both of the other two, and that's a really common situation. As long as Switch doesn't have total third-party parity with Playstation and Xbox, there's no meaningful competition really.

And like @Shrek said, Microsoft at least is choosing to work with them rather than compete anyway.

It will definitely be out next year. Mostly because Microsoft has already leaned so far into revealing Scarlett and (in my mind) more importantly saying that they don't want there to be typical console generations anymore which leads me to believe they don't care about the life cycle of the X1 or X1X anymore. They might feel like having new options like wanting to buy a more powerful computer but still being able to play the same software no matter what you're on is the future for consoles.
