If they serve a purpose to the story, then they're really cool. One example is in Creed when his first big fight has the camera in the ring with him. You're experiencing it with him in real time and it makes it soooo much better than if it was shot in a normal way.

A lot of great points and I’d probably agree with most of it including the negatives. Good point about his ability to capture that adventure feel and his intrigue-based story styles. I do always have fun with his movies because of those reasons.

I think as far as writing goes my issues are less in the efficacy and more in the inspiration or purpose. I don’t really get a sense he’s too passionate about conveying a theme or message. Not that his movies have to be intellectually provocative, I think that it’s just what I personally gravitate toward and it’s why TLJ is one of my favorite movies ever. Rian was trying to make A LOT of points and probably too many lol

As far as direction the Dutch angles I dig if sprinkled in but I can understand why they annoy people if used too much like Thor. As far as acting I don’t know. I can’t disagree the performances overall are better in TLJ but i did love the performances in TFA as well. As far as comparing to TLJ, in the ever-troubling balance of comedy-drama, I like the balance that JJ struck more. I thought Rians was more unbalanced in too much comedy (although it all mostly worked for me) in a movie that by the writing should’ve been naturally more dark and dramatic in my opinion.

    Thanks for the response!

I don't think I liked any of the comedy in TLJ except for that iron shot. That was brilliant.

I love that tracking shot in TLJ of the Casino going over the tables into Finns reaction. Brilliant shot.

The big one for me right now that I hate even more than Dutch angles or shaky cam is rapid-fire (over)editing. Just like anything else, a good filmmaker can play with editing and a ton of cuts and do it well. An example that comes to mind is how Darren Aronofsky shortens the shot lengths as Requiem For A Dream goes on so that by the end the shots are very short and the edits are happening very fast. I don't tend to enjoy watching anything edited in this style but I would say it is done well here and is very effective.

More often than not these days though we just end up with this goddamn clusterfuckery -->

I love how cute the Porgs are! Absolutely adorable. I just didn't think they were funny.

I’ve always thought The Last Jedi was great because of this reason. You utilize the middle chapter to deconstruct character, learn who these people are, and it allows you to make episode 9 more of a spectacle now that we know the stakes. It’s what Empire does so well.

I take back everything I said about them releasing the title before Celebration. These sons of bitches are really gonna do it.

They’ll just announce the name with a teaser poster and not show a trailer. I hope that’s what they do.

  15. I'd do almost anything for it to be called 'Space Justice Warrior' and to see the MRA neck beard reactions.

I read that as Ross and immediately thought 1975 and i’d also be cool with that.

I'm no film expert, but Game of Thrones has had two of the best tracking shots ever IMO

Which episodes/scenes are they in? I watched the entire show in quick succession, I love it but it's a lot of content so I am having trouble remembering details like that.
    Love that shot.
This one is excellent for exactly the reasons you stated. I did not really like the casino scene long tracking shot in Black Panther, however. Something about hat one felt off and took me out of the scene. It didn't feel like it had a real purpose in that scene other than looking impressive. I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority there though. For me, that's the core problem with overuse of the long tracking shot. If it doesn't seem like it has a narrative purpose, then it tends to takes me out of a scene and I'll be thinking more about the camera technique itself and less on the story it's trying to tell.

Did Anthony Daniels' cryptic tweets from a couple weeks ago turn out to be nothing?

Probably The Watchers on the Wall shot that goes all around Castle Black during the battle and The Battle of the Bastards shot following Jon in all the chaos. There's a couple other notable ones.
