R&B Thread Genre

Very brief and reductive overview of the genre:

R&B, one of the oldest forms of American recorded music, was born out of a need for "record companies to describe recordings marketed predominantly to urban African Americans, at a time when "urbane, rocking, jazz based music with a heavy, insistent beat" was becoming more popular". It has since been married to every popular genre since, and is the basis for much of what we recognize as pop music today. Contemporary R&B has roots in both motown and disco, as well as hip hop, jazz, and electronic music.

After a relatively fallow period in which R&B was not afforded the same kind of critical prestige that it deserved in the 00's, R&B has experienced a resurgence among independently minded musicians and listeners in the 2010s, particularly as artists such as Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, Miguel and Jeremih released watermark pieces of work that forced many to reconsider their opinion on the genre.

Just wanted to say '90s R&B is great and that's where I tend to hang out. I am a little more selective on current stuff. I don't dig too deep beyond some of the hits, but here is a list of some songs I like. I tried to just pick songs that didn't lean too much to hip hop or pop. Nothing real groundbreaking, but it gives you an idea of where I am at with R&B for the most part.

Haha I haven't listened to that song in a while, but I feel like I remember liking one of their songs more than their big hit. I was just dropping some songs that most people know to get a sense of the R&B I listen to.

Any August Alsina fans in here?? That dude is so good, I couldn't believe I'd never heard a full project from him before. All his stuff is honestly great.

Spun this a couple times. I really dig it

 

This song is WAY too catchy to not become a hit. All it needs is a remix with a rapper verse added. I wish Chris Brown wasn't in it obviously, but other than that it's on point.

 

All I've been listening to today is the new dvsn album. I'm really impressed with how good it is.

 

I need to get a good mix of early 90's r&b; Boyz II Men, TLC, Jodeci, all that stuff

 

I need to check that and the Gallant album still.
