    Signal Vs. Noise Prestigious

Honestly I went back to The Beautiful Letdown today and didn’t realize Gone was on that record. So it might move up above Legend of Chin.

Outside of the singles the album just never connected with me where as the rest of them had some sort of meaningful connection which is why I rank it so low

It's funny because the singles are great, but I was shocked by how good the rest of the album was when I first listened years back. It's so dynamic and experimental, especially for their most successful mainstream release, and some of the lyrics are just stunning. Definitely one of my favorites of all-time.

No disputing TBL was a game changer, but when I go back to that record only about half still holds up for me

    The rivalry is back on

The Beautiful Letdown is, at the very least, a top 3 (but probably a top 1) Switchfoot album

Oh! Gravity. is probably my favorite just because it came out at the peak of my alt-Christian music phase (along with Anberlin’s Cities and Relient k’s Five Score), but if I didn’t have such strong memories associated with that album, I’d say TBL

In regards to Switchfoot, I really haven't listened to them as much as I should have. I only own The Beautiful Letdown and Nothing Is Sound. I'd pick TBL out of those two. I was tempted to pick up the new one but I was put off by the reaction in the thread on this site, haha! Ultimately gave it a miss.

I'm clearly not the biggest fan but I respect Jon Foreman (I own both his EP series) and I respect what they have achieved.

Thanks for sharing. I know the feeling regarding wanting new heavy music - I just don't have any desire for something new these days. I tend to check out the bands that I know and have a history with, but I haven't found anything that truly stands out to me (and connects with me on a deeper level) in recent years... and I'm fine with that.

I checked out the sale but I had all the albums that I wanted already! Great that they do that though and I hope others were able to pick stuff up they wanted.

Give Me Rest is probably one of my top 5 all time albums which I guess explains why I didn't get into Phoenix as much and felt like something was lacking. Ultimately enjoyable but not something I've returned to much. I'm looking forward to LP2 which they are recording now. (Although I didn't enjoy the Laid Low EP)

Give Me Rest though... it hit me at just the right time of my life and was instrumental to my faith and journey. In fact, that album and Broken Voice by My Epic both came out on the same day (if I remember correctly) and both arrived on the day that a man from my parent's church unexpectedly died. I remember hearing the news and then going out to a wood nearby and listening to those records back to back and just crying throughout because I couldn't understand why.

I think I've always been drawing to the longing, questioning side of Christian music and Give Me Rest really connected with me. It's accompanied me on the journey of the last few years and lyrically still hits home.

Sorry for gushing, it's an important album to me so I just had to share. What has brought Phoenix above it for you? I'd be interested to hear. I listened to Phoenix a few times at the end of last year and there's no doubt that it is a good album so I think it's more the lyrical and emotional connection that gives Give Me Rest the edge.

The only Switchfoot albums I truly know are TBL, Oh! Gravity and Hello Hurricane. Outta those three I'll put TBL as my fav and it's aged well imo. I remember thinking Ammunition was the coolest song ever, sick intro. Pretty "heavy" too for me at the time lol

Hello new The Beautiful Mistake music. I knew they'd got back together for a few shows last year but had no idea this was leading to a new EP. YES!

(This all came about because Levi The Poet tweeted about winter not ending so I posted a link to The Beautiful Mistake song Narnian Analogy which ends with the lyrics "This winter, this winter, this winter will end" and then TBM randomly commented, ha!)

Any The Beautiful Mistake fans around? I think their last album came out in 2004 which seems like forever ago.

I was a huge fan of these guys, and was super bummed when they broke up. They put on an excellent live show, too. Their last album was (IMO) underrated, I think because people wanted more screamo and they ended up writing a weird poppy space-rock influenced album instead. Pretty excited to hear new music from them.

Shoot, the way you described Give Me Rest (which I loved but haven't listened to a ton recently) makes me think I should revisit it today. And, also think that I shouldn't, lol.

But, yeah, thanks for sharing. My younger sister's boyfriend died in a car accident last fall, & yeah, that kinda sudden death really does have a way of creeping under your skin in weird, surprising ways. I've been pretty obsessed with Genesis 1 & what it implies about the nature of God & the world since then. (Which is funny 'cause a decade ago, I was obsessed with that chapter in that silly creationism/evolution way, lol.)

Yeah, I definitely remember getting that second album and was like "was it this? There's no screaming" (probably the first time I had that reaction). But as I kept listening I fell in love with it. The debut was more in your face with the lyrics but both albums still sound great.

Also, Fragile Fingers from their EP was one of my favourite songs when I was getting into music.

Yes, it really does. Hope you enjoyed your listen if you got chance.

It's also quite fun to compare and contrast how personal perspectives have changed in 10 years. Even in the last few years I've gone from working at a church, preaching and leading worship to struggling to sit through a service!

I feel a strong connection with Give Me Rest and Broken Voice too. Those came out the summer I was taking care of my dying uncle and both gave me an incredible amount of comfort. I actually didn’t listen to Phoenix a ton when it came out because, again, it came out the same day as My Epic did with Behold and that became one of my favorite albums of all-time. But when I went back it did hit me on a very personal level. It’s so painful and raw but then there are these moments of pure joy like You Are and Remember No More. It’s not quite a dynamic as Give Me Rest, but it feels like it tells this amazing and cohesive story from front to back and it’s amazing.

My favorite kind of music is music that acts as catharsis but also brings the Gospel into that catharsis. That’s how Flyleaf changed my life when I was a teen.

Wanted to send you this sermon - ► WATCHING & PRAYING || MICHAEL MILLER
Touches on not getting discouraged by our current landscape and culture. I live in Guatemala so I'm a bit removed, but if we don't take these things to prayer we can really easily get bitter and angry at the body. Just keep pursuing Jesus, man. He will show you how he sees things and how he feels about the modern church.

    Newbie

It was the summer of 2004. I was fresh out of the fourth grade. I was chubby and had the poofiest of hair. This info is unnecessary. One day, my older brother handed me a CD with the front cover presenting a bass guitar lying across the floor of a grimey, abandoned pool. I clicked the CD into my newly received Walkman Player, sporting the wrap-behind-your-head school computer lab headphones. The moment I heard the iconic hard-panned guitars of Meant to Live's intro, my ten-year-old self knew something special was happening. But ten-year-old me didn't understand how special that entire record would be for me. There's nothing else out there quite like it. With its moving lyricism, super clean and sometimes quirky production, and overall genuine tone brought out by Jon Foreman's vocals and the band's heartfelt playing, The Beautiful Letdown has been one of the most influential records in who I am as a musician, producer, songwriter, and overall person. Though I didn't become a Christian until my late teens, I believe God used this record as well as Nothing is Sound (along with records like P.O.D - Satellite, Blindside - About a Burning Fire, MUTEMATH - Self Titled) to draw me to the truth. That may sound overly intense, but I recall pondering Jon's lyrics deeply as a kid and feeling a sense of hopefulness glimmering in the subtleties of my thought life. And I am thankful for that. Switchfoot is pretty good.

    Great.

Here's a list of my current favourites:
    - Other People's Problems (a Canadian podcast featuring therapy conversations between therapist Hillary McBride and some of her clients - basically inspired me to explore becoming a counsellor)

    - The Deconstructionists (two guys interviewing various people as they deconstruct faith and explore what they believe. I've always found this podcast to be intellectually stimulating, humble and full of gracious dialogue)

    - The Liturgists (this has been a pivotal podcast in my faith journey and I think their current set up with four permanent hosts has been excellent. I also listen to the bonus podcast The Alien & The Robot which is exclusive to their patrons via Patreon)

    - Nomad Podcast (essentially a British faith journey / deconstruction podcast. Nice for me to listen to when I need to remember I'm not American and my story is (slightly) different)

    - Makers & Mystics (a great podcast about creativity, arts and faith. Really inspiring and as someone who enjoys creativity, really worthwhile for me!)

    - The Bad Christian Podcast (I mainly listen for the interviews with other bands. I know they're controversial and not universally liked in this thread, but they are learning and growing)

    - The Sleeping at Last Podcast (I love Ryan O'Neal's work and this podcast has been incredible, particularly for the episodes on each of his Enneagram songs. He goes into so much depth and I love learning about the songs)

    - The Fundamentalists (interesting conversations between philosopher Dr Peter Rollins and comedian Elliott Morgan about random things. Just a fun listen, but they do often talk about religion/faith etc)

    - Labeled (I wanted to be annoyed when they deleted the back catalogue of episodes and started this new arc but it's still fascinating and I've learnt a lot about where I (technically) came from in terms of alternative Christian music)

    - Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness (find this podcast to be hilarious and insightful. I was introduced to JVM by Queer Eye and then discovered he had this podcast. Each week he interviews someone else about a topic and asks some important questions. Very interesting.)

    - The Robcast (Rob Bell's podcast. I tend to pick and choose with this one when a title catches my eye)

    - Homilies by Richard Rohr (short 10 minute talks from Richard Rohr recorded at his church services. They've been good when I want something theological and a bit more churchy)

As far as faith-based podcasts, the only one I listen to religiously is The Bible for Normal People with Pete Enns and Jared Byas. Two very smart guys unpacking a lot of big ideas and making them accessible. They had a great episode recently where Pete went through an article on The Gospel Coalition about Progressive Christianity and Atheism; I'd highly recommend it.

I don't listen to much podcasts, but a recent one I found that I like a lot is called Ask NT Wright Anything. 30 minute segments of him answering questions. Good stuff

And of course I gotta be a basic and include The Bible Project Podcast. Tim and Jon are the best.
