IAAN has grown a lot on me. I'm still not in love with it, but it's a good song.

I Am A Nightmare is a fine little song, which is totally unacceptable by this point.

Gonna put this one out there; IAAN is better than every song on YFW, barring Soco.

    I'd agree there. :crylaugh:

The only thing I could agree with IAAN being better than is YFW, except for No Seatbelt Song which I think is pretty cool sometimes. IAAN is just kinda bad, honestly.

Apart from the mix, what are people's issues with IAAN? We've had it for a month, so I'm curious where everyone is at with it. Not just "this song is icky" or "I like it" but specifics as to why you hold The opinion on it that you do.

Edit: I should add that I understand it comes off of 7 years of expectation. Mene sorta/kinda bridged that gap at tad, but I enjoyed Mene immediately. I am also aware that brand new Brand New music has always had a polarizing tendency.

I vastly prefer Mene, but IAAN is not a bad song by any means. Just think a lot of us expected something very different given the huge leap from Deja to TDAG and then Daisy, two very powerful albums imo. IAAN is kind of a step back I think. It's good, but I feel as though they're definitely capable of much, much better. It kind of frustrates me knowing that it's even going to be on the new album - it works fine as a single I can listen to every now and then, but that's as far as it goes for me.

I won't skip it when the album comes out, but I haven't gone out of my way to listen to it since the first few days after the release. It just seems like a run of the mill pop-punk (post-pop-punk?) song to me. Not bad, not great. While Mene isn't too much more unique, I find myself constantly revisiting that song due to the engrossing lyrics and the perfect mix of scaled back lead vocals and super energetic instrumentals. The lyrics and delivery of IAAN just don't do it for me.

Posted this a few days ago about IAAN. Kinda got lost as the last post on the page.

I think the lyrics are where it shines.

I just think IAAN is boring. And the lyrics are kind of whatever. It's closer to YFW than I ever wanted the band to get to again. Like, I've listened to it quite a few times and it's so forgettable that I'm listening to it now for reference and I honestly don't even remember any of this still.

I know a lot of people had it grow on them after a bit, but I don't feel like I should have to listen to a song a hundred times to like it. That just feels like forced enjoyment. Mene was okay, still wouldn't put that song above anything but YFW though.

Could you imagine Brand New released albums on a normal cycle? We'd be around album 7

Be gone is cool, untitled is cool, mene is cool, nightmare is cool...

To summarize, brand new is cool.

If IAAN is what Brand New wants to be doing right now, then sweet, I'm happy for them and I hope they continue to do what they want to do, whatever that may be.

HOWEVER, personally, I don't like the song. Which I've come to terms with, I'm totally fine with not liking it. A younger me, would not have been okay with disliking a new Brand New song, which is funny to think about haha.

Yeah I mean, just echoing what others have said. I think it's just the most straight forward thing they've done in a long long time, and I wasn't expecting it. I think the lyrics are bad, I don't like the "kinda freakkng me out" part at all. The opening riff is just meh. Like it isn't really interesting at all.

All that being said, it's a fun song live.

I guess I should be realistic in that I've seen way more of a negative opinion on IAAN than positive. So not even polarizing, but disspointingly not living up to many expectations.

Maybe I am still in the stage of thinking where I'm blinded by the fact that they're my favorite band. I don't think that's the case, but I feel so odd enjoying it when everyone else seems to strongly dislike it.

Maybe I should try to avoid the "first listen" if @Jason Tate does one for LP5. I want to come away from hearing it for the first time with clear thought and purely my own opinion.

    Probably not. Haha.

But Thrice is the likely usurper of Brand New as my #1. They've been neck and neck since '09. I was able to take in TBEITBN with clear thought. Albeit, there wasn't a gap of 7 years since their last record.

My perception of IAAN isn't even that it's a bad song... It's just miles away from being "Brand new-levels of good". It's just so "meh" for me, which in brand new language is not a good thing.
