    a literal succubitch

think it's high time this classic got posted again while we're on the subject

  2. Been a while since I put these bands on.

If anyone has any recommandation for stuff in a similar vein to Testament's The Gathering, I'm all ears. I guess I still have a hard time differentiating thrash and death, as I've seen this album refered as both.

The Haunted are amazing. Their last album was absolute gold.

Also if you're after some classic thrash and you haven't heard them already, try Demolition Hammer. They're American but sound more like the German bands like Kreator and Sodom.

I wasn't in to extreme stuff when it came out and I didn't like it. It was only after I got into that stuff that I appreciated how good parts of it were. Plus Corey sounds good as hell on it compared to Vol 3. It's not nearly as good as the first two, but I think it's not as far from V3 as people say.

Weird that you mention the Blackening as I heard that around the same time and liked it haha

Well, more thrash metal should be coming down the pipeline since it is Thursday...

Not at all. The new song isn't bad and reminds me a lot of their older material which I enjoyed a lot in my tween days when I was getting into metal. I have nothing to contribute beyond that though so I'll just remain mum on the subject. :)

I haven't listened to the new song, or Slipknot in general in ages, but when they first came out, I loved the first two/three records. Walked 5 miles to go buy Iowa the day it dropped.

But ever since then, I've felt like Slipknot is one of the most overrated bands ever. Not to disparage them in any way, but I never really understood the immense fandom they have.

  10. The maggots thing was the first time I heard of the phenomenon known as fandom. Witnessing the build up to Vol.3, such as the masks reveals and their aftermath was so much fun. There were so many weird rumors and urban myths about each member at my middle school, and the band knew how to milk every single tidbits surrounding their persona. It was all pre-social media so my older brother, a few friends, and I would spend so much time finding as much information as we could about them, through sketchy websites or magazines... and it wasn't an easy task. The mystery around them was a huge part of their appeal, as well as the edgy aesthetic.

Couple of new (potential) slappers for y'all:

New Whitechapel single. Haven't had a chance to listen to it yet since I forgot my headphones today, and my coworkers probably don't want to listen to deathcore.

    GRINDCORE. ITALIAN STYLE.

TODAY WE'RE LISTENING TO TECH/PROG THRASH FOR THRASH METAL THVRSDAY

starting with the mighty Canadians themselves:

I know lots of people love it and especially have come to live in retrospect but I just can't. To me I think Vol. 3 was the best example of a perfect balance between the heavier older style and the more melodic alt-rock influences Corey Taylor has tried to bring in since. And honestly songs like "Psychosocial" just remind me of lame circle jerk hang sessions with high school friends who were convinced Slipknot were the most amazing and game-changing metal band ever and wouldn't entertain anything else.

Yeah I loved The Blackening back then too but to me now it just sounds so self-indulgent and overblown, especially when compared to the first 2 Machine Head albums which were like perfect blends of heavy riffing and more technical parts as well. The More Things Change will forever be Machine Head's greatest album and I will die on that hill.

Why are Whitechapel dropping a single/artwork/preorders for an album that's still 5 months from release?

  19. While we're talking about Machine Head, I listened to their newest album at the beginning of the year and surprisingly liked it? I missed the other post-The Blackening releases, so I have no idea if the backlash was because of a certain drop in quality or a stylistic change though. It has a few goofy and dated parts, but nothing that shocking compared to what they were doing in The Burning Red or Supercharger.

See I love The Burning Red (still hate Supercharger) and its actually my second favourite Machine Head album, but I just felt like Catharsis is a bad retread of that sound with like a tenth of the soul The Burning Red had. But hey I'm done bashing that album because Atreyu released their new album and I legitimately think that's way worse.

But that "Bastards" song is so misguided, especially for someone whose political views I respect as much as Robb Flynn's. I get what he's doing but using slurs if they don't apply to you and you're not reclaiming them is so bad.

  21. Atreyu are back again? The last few albums they put out before their hiatus were so bland and radio rock-y. I wonder how well their old stuff holds up.

I wasn't sure if Flynn was trying to respond to the alt right portion of the metal community, but just didn't have the range to do it without coming across as edgy and immature. I'll get into the lyrical aspect a second time because I don't remember much. I'm reading the ones for Bastards right now and... welp.

It's amazing how much of a nosedive Machine Head took with their latest release to me...The Blackening and Unto the Locust are damn near classics to me (The Blackening especially). Bloodstone & Diamonds was solid...but Catharsis. Oooof. That might be my most disappointing release of the year so far (I still can't believe it came out in January - it feels like forever and a day ago).

Dude, Bloodstones & Diamonds is great. I don't think that album gets enough respect for how solid it is. I would've taken another exploration of those symphonic/electronic elements over the neutered Burning Red 2.0 that we got any day.
