That was the song that pulled me back in man. I was playing my iPod Touch, which is just one giant playlist for me. I don't have full albums and just rock shuffle. Scratch was on there and I was like, "I should go back to this album". These are the things that happen on 10-hour car drives haha.

  2. I still get sad every time I read their band name.

So glad we're taking the time to talk about this right now. I'm gonna have to do a massive sweep of my iTunes library to create a playlist of all these bands. It's been too long.

Do or do not, there is no try.

I read that and heard Hell Song, Still Waiting, We're All To Blame, In To Deep, Fat Lip all in my head at once. I love Sum 41.

When Matt first joined, he said in an interview that he'd have a tough time with a lot of Blink songs since Tom writes guitar parts that he'd never write.

Matt leans mostly on dynamic power chord progressions and octaves. He doesn't write "riffs" or "arpeggios" all that often like Tom did post-Dude Ranch. For example, Matt would never write a riff like the main riff in "Feeling This."

And so far, I've only heard dynamic chord progressions that are synonymous with Matt's guitar playing in Alkaline Trio. There's nothing wrong with that as it harkens back to Dude Ranch. But speaking for myself, I already miss Tom's guitar playing. He's not a technical player nor a good performer but he's creative nonetheless.

I'm not a Tom apologist or anything like that. I still think Matt is best for the band moving forward, especially in a live setting.

I would love to discover more of the lesser known pop punk bands from that era since I was way too long. I feel like I already know a good amount, but there's probably still a lot that I've never heard.

A Song For Everyone would be on my shortlist of perfect pop-punk songs. It gets put on repeat sometimes at the gym haha.

I feel like Basket Case is more about the vocals in the intro rather than the guitar. Like, that is what I identify that song with. I guess you have to include it in this discussion lol.

  18. Remember when Travis Barker said Tom didn't even play guitar anymore?
“Alkaline Trio toured with Blink–182 for awhile as an opener band. We are two weeks in to practice and [Skiba’s] killing it. There’s harmonies that have never been sung. He’s actually playing the guitar instead of just Pro Tools. It’s just fresh blood and having someone that’s motivated and stoked to be there makes a world of difference. In general, Skiba has a really charming voice and it couldn’t be a better fit.”

I'm thankful for the Millencolin reminder. Used to skate so much to, "For Monkeys." Boring Planet is sooo good.

Coffee and Cigarettes is one of my favorite songs to play on guitar. It's LOADED with riffage.

I got to see them in what was practically a feature act for Sum 41. I mostly went to see NUFAN but I like Sum 41 a lot, so it was a hell of a show from beginning to end. The Starting Line was the opener. One of my favorite concerts.

I discovered new bands (all the ones being mentioned) by listening to 30 second previews on iTunes and deciding what albums I'm gonna buy haha. Anyone else do this?
