Incredible. Devin being back in the band makes the difference. Their best album since In Shallow Seas.

The cover doesn’t bother me either.

Also, I don’t get the alt/rock direction. Sounds like classic Emery to me but maybe I’m missing something!

 

I definitely think it feels classic Emery as well. Maybe it’s the lack of screaming and the 90s emo influence that is leading me to say that. It definitely feels like the natural progression, especially after hearing the reimagined tracks.

What does everyone think of the more commercial Christian rock acts like Red or Skillet?

 

I enjoy a few Skillet songs, but cannot finish a full album. Some of the groups I still have a fondness for (Kutless, Thousand Foot Krutch) and listen to them somewhat consistently.



Terminal are apparently playing a show w/ Underoath? Dang, wonder if it's just a one-off.

 

Like every youth group kid I used to love Skillet but now I just find them laughable tbh. I like(d) RED's first couple albums but everything after that I just haven't been able to get into

 

They are raising money for Lucas Starr who has cancer. Oh, Sleeper just did a benefit show with Terminal playing as well. Amazing that they’ve got the Terminal line up back and that Lucas can play with them.

 

Has anyone read One Thousand Risks by Chad Johnson? He was the former A&R for Tooth & Nail and the founder of Come&Live! I finished it earlier yesterday.

It's not specifically about Christian music but thought people in this thread may have come across it. It was endorsed by a huge variety of Christian artists from all perspectives. There are some interesting stories in it as he recounts his life of a risk-filled, faith focused life following the Christ. The aim was to encourage other Christians to take risks in their life, big or small.

With my current questions and doubts, I've been trying to keep engaging with these kind of books that I used to passionately believe in. It keeps challenging me and keeps reminding me that God is found in all these thoughts and perspectives.

Anyway, has anyone come across the book?

I enjoy the Come and Live podcast, but wasn't aware of this book. Will definitely add to my list. Right now I'm reading through Dustin Kenrue's Palms reading list. Just finished Everything Belongs and I'm about halfway through For the Bible Tells Me So. Both books have already been very illuminating.

 

I respect Skillet, but I can’t stand their music anymore. I think Comatose is solid for what it is and really like Collide, but outside that I’m not a fan.

RED’s first two albums are still solid, then next two albums fall off a bit (especially Panic). Of Beauty & Rage was excellent though. First album in this style that I’ve loved in years.

Also love everything with Lacey Sturm’s voice on it including the first three Flyleaf albums. Still think TFK’s Masquerade album is great too.

Outside that, there’s almost nothing in the genre I enjoy.

 

That's cool. Richard Rohr has been really helpful for me in putting my faith back together. I've read Everything Belongs and a few of his other books. I think I definitely lean more to that Franciscan way of looking at the world and God these days.

 

I appreciate this. Did not know it existed and am adding these to my Amazon wishlist to dig into.

 

Everything Belongs has been very helpful for me. I grew up Catholic, and have since become non-denominational, but I can still appreciate some of the mystical, spiritual aspects of early Catholicism. I have a very hard time turning off electronics and avoiding distractions, and this book has been a huge help in understanding the importance of silence and contemplation. Easier said than done most days.

 

Skillet lost me after Collide. I still go back to the slower songs on Alien Youth a bit. never really got into RED.

 

Collide is still a jam. One of the better albums of that era of Christian rock.

Early Disciple is still good if you don't mind shameless corniness cranked to 11. Back Again rules.

The best TFK album, & only one I still dig start to finish, is The Flame in All of Us. Just really solid Christian rock all around.

I've still got a soft spot for those first couple Fireflight albums.

Of course, while more pop than much of what we're discussing, Jesus Freak by dc Talk will always be the undisputed king of Christian rock.

 

Oh, and Flyleaf is good, but not because Flyleaf is good. Lacey Sturm is a gosh darn spiritual hero for me.

 

Can't wait for this.

 

Been on a kick lately, listened to PAX 217 and now rocking Blindside.

May do some Seven Places later.

 

Lacey's melodies are also what made Flyleaf a great band for me. Once Lacey left, it hit me how empty the rest of the band sounds by themselves. But they complemented Lacey perfectly. They did have some great riffs too, but yeah, I wouldn't love Flyleaf if Lacey's vocals/melodies weren't still some of my favorites in all of music.

 

Dang. I remember my friend playing Comatose a lot back in my high school days and just now I played songs I thought I remembered liking (Whisper in the Dark and Comatose) and they were pretty meh. Wasn't expecting that haha.. Savior still a jam though.

There's a new Labeled podcast episode up now, sounds like they are revamping the format and expanding future episodes. Might be more pay for content but sounds promising. I don't like messing with what's worked so far but seems like they want to do a more comprehensive dive into T&N/Christian music history

 

There is something about Matt Carter that rubs me the wrong way. I have no idea what/why, but every time I listen to Bad Christian or Labeled, I just....I don't even know how to explain it.
