We reach for the longest shadow

I would definitely give it more chances, even if it means taking it half the album at a time. I love it personally, but I can understand it bogging down and running together for some. It's mostly 5+ minute songs that all move at a similar pace and volume.

I wonder if they will become fairly prolific during Vaxis. 5 albums is a lot, and if they do their normal 2.5-3 years in between albums, they'll all be over 50 by the time they all come out.

NWFT goes hard it just has the unfortunate task of going against their first 3 records. Still got some of their catchiest songs

I love the The Hound, but some people say it's the worst song on there. I don't get that at all.

Band was great at the Hard Rock show. (The crowd chanting Na na nana na na before the encore was a nice touch)

I've yet to be able to listen to the album front to back but of the new songs I hadn't heard:

It Walks Among Us (out of context this sounds like a song about zombies)
    Toys
    Black Sunday
Queen of the Dark reminds me a bit of the Audience.

Really solid release. Probably up there with Afterman for me, but I feel like Afterman had more variety in terms of song styles.

2-3-4 on NWFT are great, everything else is forgettable

Mother Superior, Gravemakers and Gunslingers, and The End Complete beg to differ.

I think this is correct. Right now I think I like this more, but the title track, Evagria, Number City, and Holly Wood (even though I don't care for it) really did some things Coheed had never done before.

NWFT title track and Mother Superior are pretty tight, even as someone who can't stand the record as a whole.

As far as song diversity: agree that Afterman was more diverse than UHC, but I'd argue it was to a fault. Very few bands can jump across 6 different genres within a record and maintain quality and cohesiveness. The Afterman stuff started to lean into The Dear Hunter territory where the music is just all over the place and it starts to feel like it's being made to serve the story, rather than the other way around.

I respect their willingness to experiment, but I'm glad they've tightened it back up a little since then.

Afterman sounded disjointed because of how they recorded it. They recorded all instruments for a song (maybe even finished producing it?) before moving on to the next one. It's how songs like Domino, Gravity's Union, Subtraction, Vic and Number City are all on the same record and all have different production choices.

i think i prefer afterman to this but the title track and “2’s my favorite 1” are my favorite coheed songs ever so it was inevitable i’d feel this way. think afterman does an admirable job of tying all its different styles together (though they’ve never made another record as varied and balanced as iks)

i wish anything on vaxis felt as light on its feet as “2’s my favorite 1”. all of these songs work really hard (again, not necessarily a negative criticism)

2's My Favorite 1 will always be the best album ender for me.
I can perfectly picture that song playing as the credits scroll down with a picture box of Amory flying back to space plays on the side.

Old Flames has that light-on-its-feet feeling to me. And also seems like the perfect album closer, even though Lucky Stars is cool and doesn't really fit anywhere else within the tracklist.

That song is easily a top 5 Coheed song for me, and I never see anyone talk about it! Reminds me of SSTB! That "ohhhhhhhhhhhhh" gives me chills every time

Glad to see some love for 2's My Favourite 1. I'm always repping that as my fav Coheed song. That chorus is perfection.

I think at this point my least fav is All On Fire. I've seen a lot of people saying that one reminds them of GA1 and I don't hear it at all, maybe because every song on GA1 was recorded a half step down and All On Fire is not

Same. I don’t like the “please bring water” line and it’s repeated a lot. I would trim this one to get that album length down a tad.

I got the limited vinyl, but I’m in the same boat here with you otherwise. I mean, I really like the record, but it all kinda blends unlike previous records to me. Track to track there isn’t much differentiation and that’s kind of a bummer. I’m sure it will grow on me even more. My personal example is New Found Glory’s “Not Without a Fight”. It took 4-5 listens on that one and then al the sudden it just clicked.
