Also Josh isn't the only one saying this. I know you're also wary of Jake but he also happens to be close to the survivor, and many other people close to them are backing Josh and saying/supporting similar things. Tanner Jones, Slingshot Dakota, Sarah from For Everest, Foxes In Fiction, Lost + Found mgmt, petal i mean like, a lot of folks who know the person firsthand

no one is taking anyone’s word as fact here. some people just aren’t treating it as a fact that pitchfork and the band’s intentions were entirely pure either.

They definitely weren’t pure. There would always be a motive to come back and make music/money again.

It's a complicated situation. You don't want to speak for the victim or look like you're speaking for them or out the victim by giving too much detail. It's a fine line to be walking and I think his approach was reasonable personally

ultimately I think placing the pitchfork article as the default truth is not the right call.

I listened to the first two tracks just out of curiosity. Honestly the whole thing just feels off because of the situation obviously. Though Rings sounded good. So IF I did purchase the album are those good organizations/foundations to support?? I’m not well versed in these charities. Obviously any suicide prevention program is good, but I’m hoping the band didn’t just slap together any organization to make the situation look better.

I still don't understand what he did. It does not seem to be of criminal nature. She was of age. It doesn't condone it. I just don't get it. He manipulated a girl with a boyfriend to do something something is all I got from this all. He used fans, well I think that's a common thing, sadly. I think I'll resume listening as I've shut it down for so long. It doesn't seem like a Brand New situation, who I'm totally done with.

Independent of the situation, a sad part for me was how much of an emotional connection his songs make me feel, and how that might not be there anymore.

does everything have to be criminal for it to seem off and possibly not great to you? genuinely curious, that seems to be the line most people draw.

you can be a shitty person and not someone i want to support and also not break any laws

No not at all. But also people do shitty things. Friends of mine, have done shitty things and the level of shitty matters. There's a line, and I guess that's subjective. I just don't know enough to feel he's crossed it without knowing anything really. At the same time, it's not really my prerogative to know. Confusing situation all around.

    I think the argument is..

he did a shitty thing, may or may not have changed. I’m not going to support him but you can.

I havnt seen people saying that they shouldn’t be allowed to play music, but people don’t want to support someone who is a bad person and abused their platform to hurt someone. I understand that a ton.

Mandancing is probably the closest you're going to get to a PG alternative sonically

I don't think I want to listen to this and I might bail from the thread. I just keep going back to a quote about music being a zero sum game, you are literally devoting time to one artist instead of listening to another, so I just feel off still about dealing with this band even if they've addressed everything. Its all a mess.

Fire Is Motion : "Yesterday's Coffee" is amazing but really their whole EP is great. Deals with death, and guilt, and hope.
MandDancing : "broken" is great, but perhaps not most representative of their vibe. They've got a lot of Manchester Orchestra's first album vibes. I love "Joe", too.

seeing the scars that manipulation and emotional abuse from abusive relationships left on some of my friends I'm gonna go ahead and say maybe you should take that kind of shit seriously

Catching up on this thread. I’m going to be real with you, this post is so condescending it’s honestly infuriating. It’s incredibly hard not to take it personally; it genuinely made me feel like shit as a non man, as a survivor of both recent sexual assault and prolonged childhood sexual abuse, as someone who hasn’t been super quick to jump on the “this is all just PR train.” I’ll concede that I’m sure you didn’t mean for it to have that effect, and I’m really beside myself on posting this reply because I don’t want to make this all about myself, but honestly from my perspective you have a history of posting things that end up making others feel belittled.

I don’t know, I don’t expect you to care what I have to say here or to change your perspective because of this reply, and I don’t want to tone police you or whatever. It’s just frustrating and I felt the need to be transparent here, because I don’t want to internalize these feelings all day.

I kind of feel the same not knowing exactly what he did. But we aren’t entitled to details and people close to the situation think what he did was pretty damn bad. So I’m erring on the side of it’s worse than we think it was
