No hate on Tom at all. I like Tom, I even like his work on Neighborhoods/ DED (mostly). I liked AVA up through the love albums and even Dreamwalker. But that EP is a dumpster fire.

Literally every song on California is better than any song on that demo. You mean to tell me you think that demo EP is better than Bored To Death? San Diego? I mean I’m all for different opinions but yiiikes

    Things have changed.

It was a very reactionary release to Blink doing more stuff. But I think there are some decent ideas there that should have been developed more rather than released in halfway-finished form.

Exactly. I have so many demos of songs that just aren't there yet for my band, I wouldn't want anyone to hear an unfinished product like that, especially if I had Tom's level of a following.

Because this was Tom's response to being kicked out of blink. They claimed he didn't care about the band etc, etc. He went into damage control and released this as a "see I was working on some really fast old school punk stuff for the next album and here's the proof".

Also this was during the time where Tom said he was releasing like 4 albums in the next year so yeah.

I thought DED was fine. I like it. Not sure if I like it better than Neighborhoods because it doesn't have a stand out really good song like After Midnight or Even If She Falls. When I Was Young, Dogs Eating Dogs and Disaster are good. I don't mind Boxing Day, PLG is my least favorite track though not just because of the rap part which is completely out of left field for the band.

I do think Tom had been working on When I Was Young, Disaster and PLG before Mark and Travis joined him in the studio. Maybe they were left over ideas for AVA that he decided to use for blink once they got rid of their label and went independent so they would have something to release. According to Mark and Travis, recording DED was very spur of the moment that they did in like a week and a half.

He was such a train wreck for those first few months after he quit/got kicked out. It was just as bad, maybe even worse, than when he started up AVA and said that the music was going to change the world.

Oh no that was worse than AVA. At least then you could still just think he wasn't being serious about all that change the world crap lol. That was a sad stretch when Tom needed to counter every single bit of blink news with an announcement of an announcement lol

Yeah good point, it was definitely worse in 2015/2016 mainly because of social media (Twitter and IG). I had forgotten that every time blink announced something he would almost immediately afterwards and name drop the band in each post. And I also forgot his passive aggressive post about Bored To Death being released.

I like DED a lot, but it came out when I was 16 and I’m pretty sure I’d trash it if I heard it for the first time now

Yeah and dissing them needing a producer at one point.

All this Tom talk makes me want to listen to California today hah.

It’s nice to see Mark in the studio. Hopefully it’s for Blink and hopefully Travis laid down some drum tracks for them to play around with before his health issues started.

I thought Suburban Kings was a good song. But even that I haven't listened to in three years.

    What he say about BTD?

  24. I wonder what would have happened if they got the Rubin brothers to assist them during the Neighborhood sessions or afterwards. Wasn't Ilan blowing Tom's mind so much that he finally decided to reflect on his songwriting abilities, and then realized that he kept writing the same guitar licks, the same power chords, and singing the same melodies over them over and over again? Paraphrasing, but I'm almost sure he said something of this sort once.

I don't necessarily mean in a producer sense, but as co-writers for example.

In many more words he basically said see what I'm talking about Mark and Travis clearly wanna make childish radio pop punk while I want to push myself as a songwriter and write epic progressive songs.
He also went on to address how Feldman is a credited songwriter for it and how he doesn't think it's a good look to have outside writers or something to that effect.
