August in Review:
This month's write-up is coming a little later than usual because work has been crazy, but also because August was kind of a strange month. A few of the albums that I was really excited for (Ariana Grande, Mitski, Troye Sivan) fell a bit flat for me on repeat listens, and it's finally getting to the point where the actual mass of music I've listened to at this point in the year has fully overwhelmed my ability to process new material. I passed the 200 New Albums mark this month, and it's only 2/3 of the way through the year. It's a lot.

My favorite album of this month was The Beths' Future Me Hates Me, a punchy set of indie rock anthems from a New Zealand four-piece that have an uncommon warmth about them. Set off by lead vocalist Elizabeth Stokes' infectious delivery, the music sits comfortably alongside the Camp Cope album from earlier this year. While that album felt like an exposed nerve, this one is a bit more of a sugar rush, as the ups and downs of songs like "Little Death" demand an endless pogo. There's an elemental urgency to the band's melodies and harmonies that remind me of one of my favorite albums from college, Miniature Tigers' Tell It to the Volcano. It's been a great running album, getting me 'round the park and over the Williamsburg Bridge.

September in Review:
Still catching up... September brought in a number of really special projects from artists I was both expecting and not expecting. Foremost among these is Ruston Kelly's debut, which came out of nowhere to become one of the most resonant albums of the year for me. It's the sound of a man going through real darkness and coming out the other side, full of clear, tuneful songwriting that reminds me of Ryan Adams' best work. I keep finding new songs that hit me (currently it's "Jericho"), which is always a good sign. There's special things to come for this guy.
