Good guy, but a bad dude

I've been trying not to listen too much since it leaked as I want to avoid overplaying it and caving into repeat jams of the mewithoutYou singles, but goddamn this is good.

I don’t know how often I’ll revisit the whole album. There’s about 3/4 I really enjoy, but some of the others fall flat to me. Maybe it’ll grow but I dunno

Yeah, it’s not in tune. Sounds pretty flat to me overall. The F# is pretty close but the D and C# in particular are gratingly flat.

A Branch in the River and Hold up a Light ruin the flow of the album for me. I'm not a fan. Hold up a Light feels like the most generic song they've written in a long time. The first three tracks are really solid. The last two songs are why I love Thrice. I was expecting that I would like this more than TBEITBN, but now I'm not so sure.

Anyone else disappointed by the vinyl presentation? It seems like no thought was put in it. Just very basic

A little disappointed after one full listen. The first three songs were great and I was starting to think this could be a very special Thrice album, then I just got pretty bored with like the next 5 tracks. I’m sure it will grow more on me with each listen, but I initially LOVED the first three tracks + closer, and hope the rest begins to click with me.

    Cursed by my ancestry

Hold up a light is just fine. Which, if we're grading on a curve, is bad for this band. I think I like it more than Wake Up after a couple listens.

Favorites after like 5 listens are Blood on Blood, Beyond the Pines, and Only Us. Beyond the Pines seriously gives me goosebumps everytime, already some of my favorite Thrice lyrics.
"And I will meet you there - don't go to sleep
Our souls and feet both bare - with grass beneath
The oaths we needn't swear are vast and deep
Our breath will be our prayer - alone - complete"
You know its special when lyrics about prayer make an athiest tear up haha.

Biggest complaints: The Dark ends a little abruptly. Hold up a Light is, again, just fine.

Everything Belongs and Hold Up a Light are easily my least favorites from this and probably some of my least favorite Thrice songs. Not Wake Up bad, but still not great IMO

I knew it wasn't gate fold, I do like the sleeve though. It is what it is.. I think they may be saving the good presentation for those real expensive orders.

I definitely prefer Wake Up to Hold Up A Light

    My Soul is sexy Beggars

I'd take Wake Up over Hold a Light, but I'd also take almost any B-side over either of them

Ugh. I love EVERYTHING Thrice does, but this album is just falling flat for me. First listen through and I was half-tempted to skip tracks out of boredom. Hopefully it grows on me after a few listens.

i’ve been meaning to tell you

I can't remember where I heard it, maybe the Mark and Me podcast? But basically Dustin said it was purposeful because otherwise the song sounded too electronic and they needed something to bring it back to earth. Or something like that.

Everything Belongs kind of reminds me of Anberlin's You Belong Here, and not just because they both use 'belong', haha.

My digital downloads DO say “deluxe vinyl” next to the wax mage variant. Hoping for something super sexy.

I 100% wouldn’t love A Branch In The River so much were it not for that outro but damn, that last minute has got to be one of the coolest things they’ve ever done

Took a few listens (and a joint) to help this album really open up to me. I love Palms so much now. I realized it's exactly what I wanted from a Thrice record in 2018. The lyrics are the only downside, but I don't even care about that anymore. Every song is really great and above all, the sound of this record and of every instrument is so crisp and amazing. I can't get enough.

Really wish the vinyl was slightly more deluxe - It's really basic. I'm missing the liner notes from the last couple records. :(

First new song for me: The Dark.

    Love the intro!

Edit: Oh, those drums are nice.

Agreed. I was kind of lukewarm on it at first but then that outro hit.
