I’m the total opposite. I’ll take new studio material from Tom any day. Most of it is whatever, but there’s always a song or two that’s good.

I’d be okay never seeing Tom live again, though.

I'm in the "probably listens to a song or two of new Tom material and has no real desire to see him live" boat myself

  5. I've seen AVA full band twice and acoustic twice. I think I'm good.... If their openers were bands I want to see, I'd consider going, but if they had openers I really didn't want to see, I 100% wouldn't go, honestly.

And as far as listening to new music, I'd listen to the entire album once through to see if there were any songs I like. If there weren't any I like after one listen though, I most likely wouldn't ever go back to it, like the majority of AVA's discography.

Whenever I see I-Empire on vinyl at my local record store, I think "Oh man! I need that!" but then I see it's $30 and I remember that I very rarely even listen to that album, so I don't buy it. I just really don't like the vast majority of AVA songs. I made a playlist with only the AVA songs that I like, and it's only 14 songs, haha, and that's out of all 65 of their songs. Yikes.

I went through a phase where I actually really liked I-Empire, then I went back and actually gave Whisper a chance and liked most of it. Then by the time Love came around, it was like I had a sudden realization that he only has a handful of songwriting tricks. Same melodies, same riffs, same chord progressions. The only thing he can do differently is vary the length of the songs which just requires repeating parts for entirely too long.

I will say, I was pleasantly surprised with some of the novelty of The Dream Walker, but even still, most of the "good" songs he puts out are rehashes of other things he's already made so I can't even really enjoy them that much. So yeah, I agree with you - if you knock down their catalog to about a single album, you might get a batch of songs that actually sound unique.

I still rank Whisper #3 for all time best Tom albums (behind Untitled and BCR).

I enjoy I Empire too, but there's a few songs on there I could do without. Both LOVE albums were really terrible. I can maybe make a good EP from both. The Dream Walker was a return to form, but the production quality is awful.

Someone posted an article in one of the Alkaline Trio threads where Matt confirmed he's a full time member of blink and not just a touring member. I thought that was a pretty big reveal that no one is really talking about.

  9. Go back and listen to Whisper again. That album is pretty much garbage. :-)

At first I would say that you're crazy but you might be right. The 'Tom only songs' on the blink albums before Untitled are pretty hit or miss. I would probably put WDNTW at 4 or 5 behind Untitled, BCR, TOYPAJ and probably/maybe Enema depending on my mood.

Always here for new AVA. I've only seen them once on the LOVE tour, but it was truly a fantastic concert experience.

How on earth would an AVA tour even do attendance wise at this point. I have no idea

    I'd guess HOB type venues.

  14. I can’t finish it. Valkyrie Missile is so good that the rest of the album is just a snooze fest.

  15. if they played at a super tiny place here, i'd be more likely to go. i can't imagine they would fill the same sized venues they did when they were at their peak.

  16. valkyrie missile, the war, and sometimes do it for me now and the adventure make my list of fav songs from that album. the rest are awful or have parts that are so awful that it ruins the whole song for me.

Nostalgia makes me think more fondly of Whisper than when I actually listen to it. It also makes me think of Myspace and what a super emo I was at that time haha ugh.

I still like Valkyrie, The War and Start The Machine though. The Adventure can die in a fire lol

I listened to the album a few months ago (after not playing it for a couple years) and it was such a drag to get through

I always wonder how much more receptive we would have been if Neighborhoods or Dogs Eating Dogs had been released like two years after Untitled with AvA and +44 never existing. Those projects really lifted the curtain as far as being able to tell what their individual writing styles were like, so of course when they start rehashing stuff for blink it just sounded like stuff we had already heard and was very apparent that there wasn't much collaboration.

Great question. The band was never really big to begin with and haven't been relevant since what 2010, if that. I'm sure the band will try to sell off of Tom/blink's name but even then I could see small clubs in California but a full US tour as a head liner? Yeah don't see it.

The Neighborhoods would have been a huge let down if it was released in 2005 or 2006 coming off of the Untitled album.

I think they could easily do smaller theater sized venues across the country.

I'm sure a club tour would do pretty well, but you also have to think that even in their peak, a lot of the success was probably due to the fact that blink didn't exist in that time period. AvA was one of the closest things people could get to the blink experience (and they also weren't sick of Tom yet. haha). blink was still huge and relevant at that point so he got a lot of run off exposure. Now that you can easily go see blink, I'm not sure how many people would be clamoring to go see an Angels & Airwaves show and hear those songs. I could be wrong, but who knows.

I’m not even sure he could sell out small theaters tbh. He would probably have to play blink songs

Probably so, but I just wonder what we would think of it without the whole "Sounds like AvA!" and "Sounds like +44!" thoughts. I actually think people would have probably liked DED a little more had it come out around that time period, but that's just speculation.
