and, I can't stress this enough, most people are dumbasses about this stuff
I don't mean to absolve anyone but I'm always surprised when they're like "can you believe so and so said that" and it's like yeah I don't know why we expect celebrities to have better opinions, if anything they'd be worse because they're sheltered

Brendon is just like every other white liberal, and his answer in that interview shows it. It’s all good and dandy that he loves us gays, but I want people with a platform like him to be more aware of dumb shit they say and take the time to LEARN about why it’s important that Roseanne lost her job while black people are kneeling because they’re tired of other black people being murdered.

Not trying to argue btw. You obviously have the right mindset. But there are celebs who are using their platforms to do more than just the liberal minimum (e.g., Colin Kaepernick, Jesse Williams, Hayley Kiyoko, etc.)

Obviously I get that celebs purposely are centrists/liberals for a reason. But like as a lesbian, I don’t want stuff like what he said to represent me. Celebs are not above us, y’all. I learn stuff every damn day. We ALL grew up in this racist ass society. If we can educate ourselves and unlearn some of this stuff, then they can too.

That's why I appreciate celebs who go out of their way to learn. They have more resources and access to knowledge than a lot of others and it's a shame they dont take advantage of the opportunity more to learn and grow. I'd like to think if I was rich I'd take like one sociology class a term for the rest of my life lmao they are always adding such fun sounding classes I cant afford to take. Feels like the old saying of celebs never learning/maturing after the age they got famous is often true.

Tl;dr this isnt even about brendon anymore but me wanting to be rich apparently oop

To me, speaking out against Trump, the WBC, homophobia, guns, etc. is like bare minimum for a decent human being.

I generally think he’s just a problematic idiot (hes said the n-word while rapping on Periscope, comparing Rachel Dolezal ‘wanting to be black’ to Caitlyn Jenner) and has a weird way of apologizing when he gets called out (his “apology” for his two genders tweet).

I feel like so much of it too with a celebrity like Brendon is like...idk how to say this in a concise way but in regards to this interview I see a lot of people/fans painting anyone discussing the roseanne bit as like a mean hater looking for things to be mad about. And when I see a celebrity mess up, learn, and apologize there's people responding about how they didn't have to apologize and that people look to be offended over everything. There's a lot more that gets enabled especially when a good portion of your existence is a brand. A lot of people have a hard time seeing in between "erase this person from existence" and "never complain about their harm." even when I do see people talk about enjoying things critically mindset they vary rarely actually do the critical part and are just saying that in a 'let me promote this person in peace' or its something thats existence is fundamentally flawed (i.e. those people who worship school shooters and what not is an extreme example of it thats sadly common). I feel the biggest thing is trying to form relationships with people outside of like a fan setting and within a social section who will call you out and won't enable you or blindly reassure you. Although that can apply to even those who aren't famous. Idk what I'm saying exactly and I'm sorry for rambling in this thread so much

It’s a dumb take - but pretty sure there were NYT opinion pieces making the same argument though. Not sure if that is an indictment of the take or the NYT.

uhhh the take is terrible and the NYT is also terrible

  11. I feel like people don’t necessarily HAVE to take a side just because they’re famous, though. Definitely not a Swift fan but I don’t see why she should be forced to put herself in a box.

  12. i mean, shouldn't people have to take a side because theyre a decent person

Choosing a side that is inconsequential: corn or flour tortilla?

Not simply choosing a side: human rights and blatantly unjust scenarios

Bari Weiss is one of the dumbest fucking people on the planet and it’s an embarrassment the NYT hired her

because white nationalists think she’s on their side. that’s what happens when you don’t pick a side.

Tbh I feel like if taylor had just spoken out in the beginning people would've gotten over it but since she's waited so long and is like a weird idol for ppl on the alt right now it's a way bigger thing. As much as she complains about being dragged thru the mud, lots of outlets are v favorable to her and she has such a dedicated fanbase she's like teflon and prob would've been fine. Idk I know her roots are country, but she has enough general pop fans this isnt a Dixie chicks situation. If adele and beyonce two of the biggest artists rn can speak idk why taylor cant. Espesh cause she has enough coins for multiple lifetimes.

Espesh cause celebs are 4ever using a v easily palatable feminism for their image and brand but often refuse to get into the politics of it so as not to alienate, and I'm like now sis u cant remove the political from feminism dont front!!

Anyway tangent over idk what I'm rambling about but I applaud those who use their platforms fearlessly!
