Too bad Tom never toured AVA with Ilan Rubin. They played a KROQ Weenie Roast or whatever, but I think that's it.

This honestly kind of surprises me. I guess he was uncomfortable with the actual experimentation of the music, which is fair cos untitled was a huge risk for a pop punk band then (hell, still would be today). But was he really uncomfortable with it being dark? There's a clear throughline of darker Mark songs running through blink albums - Adam's Song didn't come out of nowhere, it was an refined version of Cacophony and Emo. Then on untitled you've got lyrics like Stockholm Syndrome and Here's Your Letter which come pretty close to being the emotional centre of the album. Just wondering out loud

Here’s your letter needs to be played at every show. Best song that gets no notice

Go is also a great song from Untitled that I feel would fit into their current vibe pretty well. Matt doing the backup vox would be rad!

  13. I guess I could understand Mark being apprehensive during the recording process as they were at peak fame and known for writing radio friendly pop punk, but I gotta assume he doesn’t regret a thing about untitled now

it's just interesting, doesn't seem like Tom was able to really tap into the dark side of things until TOYPAJ, with Stay Together for the Kids and What Went Wrong maybe. then suddenly he's the champion of going as hard as they can into that territory on their next album? I'm probably reading too much into this, in fairness we know that painkillers changed Tom a lot and Box Car Racer opened up the floodgates for untitled a fair bit

Lyrically is one thing but the actual music started getting a darker vibe to it.

There's also an important side of mark worth mentioning which is his business acumen. From my understanding he was the one who wanted to push blink as a product in addition to a band. I think he knew that pop punk was their niche and they were undeniably the kings of it after headlining the pop disaster tour. I always felt like he didn't want to give up that spot to their only real competition which was green day. We can argue all day but head to head American idiot was a more commercially successful album than untitled and my conspiracy theory side makes me think that really fucked up the band.

  17. I think you mean “because” they headlined the pop disaster tour right? That tour kinda dethroned them from kings of pop punk in my mind. I follow you though.

Yeah I think he was going through a lot of personal shit in the early 2000s and apart from his back and the pill addiction wasn't his brother sent off to Iraq or Afghanistan or something which I think he said affected him a lot? I might have mis-remembered the timeline but I think he's in the army or something.

yeah that's very fair. I guess it just surprises me that Mark is the most business-minded one while he was also arguably the one who first kicked off them moving into darker territory. but of course when he was writing the lyrics to Adam's Song he couldn't have foreseen they'd be making songs like Down/Asthenia/All of This etc. a couple years later. there are a lot of interesting sides to what exactly pushed them to make untitled, and what pushed the band to evolve in the first place really

I think I remember something like that, although I couldn't swear to the timeline either. as much as I don't want to make excuses or anything like that, it really seems like Tom became a very different person after those few years, even after he'd kicked the painkillers and all that. there was a very notable change in the way he acted, played live, and we can reasonably guess, treated Mark and Travis, too.

Last night when I couldn't sleep I just watched a million videos from their Untitled 10 year anniversary shows. Damn I still hate myself for not flying out to see those.
Also Natives sounded so good live I don't know why they never incorporated that into their regular setlist.
