Boy Meets World / Girl Meets World TV Show

Figured we should have a thread here since we had one on ap and the third season of GMW (wherein they move to high school) starts next Friday. Speaking of which, they just changed up the opening sequence of GMW to match/reference the later seasons of BMW:

 

I am sad that no one is talking about this thread. There was a GMW thread on AP but I can't remember if there was one on here. anyway I'm a firm lover of both shows! I legit teared up when I saw them re-do the opening credits (which those videos aren't working now unfortunately!).

 

Nuts. I found another copy of the GMW season 3 intro, but the behind the scenes video seems to have been taken down by Disney. Probably meant to be an exclusive video for their site and someone ripped it.

People...weren't really into it. It was a fairly dead thread. But I stuck up for it then and I stick up for it now!

I've caught a couple episodes and it does look like they did BMW some justice, though it was a bit heavy handed, especially the moral moments haha. wouldve been cool too if it didn't look like every other Disney show where everyone appears super wealthy and beautiful.

 

I've been watching Girl Meets World while babysitting my friend's daughter (or using that as an excuse to watch). We're almost caught up, and it's a really cute show so far. Not on the level of the original which I still rewatch, but enjoyable.

 

I do really love it. Is it cheesy and heavy handed? Yes. definitely. But, so was Boy Meets World. I have watched reruns of BMW regularly and I am always surprised at how different the early seasons were. So I liken Girl Meets Worlds flaws to that as well. I'm really confident that as the show grows into itself it will get better and better. I personally have loved it, and loved all the nostalgic bits they add in for our generation. I legit tear up often. It's stupid but I'm so sentimental lol

Apparently the high school principal will be Eli. Can't wait for that. I loved that they brought Mr. Turner back as the superintendent and he still has the same relationship with Cory.

 

Anyone else see the premiere? For me, it was about as rough as I expected

 

Zay is pretty much the only thing on the show I'm into right now

 

I didn't really like the two episodes. I wanted to, the trailers made them seem good. But it ended up being...idk. too try hard. We will see how the next episode is.

 

Yeah I had huge problems with the first two episodes. Beyond the continued heavy handed moralizing (I wish Jacobs would pull it back, but based on interviews he seems disinterested in such criticisms so), the lesson itself was a mess. I will never teach my kids that it's okay to let someone bully you and put you into a "hole" because, you know, they might just be trying to teach you a valuable life lesson. That is actually INSANE. I'm surprised by how out of touch that was after we got an episode devoted to Riley being bullied last season. Not to mention I have problems with the "group" occasionally feeling dangerously codependent. Was not a fan of them teaching kids that it's okay to hold your friends down when they want to leave, or punish them for it. No one should have had to apologize in that situation. Growing up, and making individual choices instead of following a codependent herd mentality, is necessary. I don't know. Sometimes I feel like they get lost in their own lessons and forget to tell an interesting, funny, realistic, level headed, good story.

For anyone interested in the goings on of old characters in the new show, Shawn just got engaged to Maya's mom in the latest episode.

 

That didn't feel earned at all. Were they even on screen together that much?

I am not too surprised. It was often a frustrating watch. People like to use the argument that criticism should take into account that this was a children's show on the Disney Channel, but there are plenty of terrific children's shows. I do think they were often inhibited by Disney, but it's hard to lay the blame solely at their feet when Michael Jacobs was behind the wheel. There's a version of Girl Meets World I will always wish this could have been, but we got what we got. At least I was able to spend some more time with former characters and see what they were up to.

For anyone interested, they were kind of anticipating this cancellation because the series finale features almost everyone from the original cast and is titled "Girl Meets Goodbye."

 

Well I for one am bummed out. Here's hoping Netflix picks it up, though!

Just curious @Nyquist what do you consider "terrific" children's shows?

 

Well I guess it's perhaps a little unfair because the shows I'm thinking of are all cartoons (Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, etc.) and that allows them more room to push boundaries creatively. Don't get me wrong, there are aspects of the show I liked but there were a lot of missteps for me personally. I wish they hadn't forced in an awkward lesson every single week in lieu of a good story. Sometimes it felt like the writers couldn't properly communicate how an actual argument between teenagers would arise. At the end of the day I care more about the characters than a lesson I can see coming from a mile away. It often felt like, again, to me, that they sacrificed character driven stories in an attempt to instead force whatever lesson the script called for that week. It just never felt natural to me. I acknowledge that Boy Meets World is wrapped up in nostalgia and thus I have a bias, but the network television production value and scripts helped it stand out and build a following. Girl Meets World often felt confined by the boundaries of Disney. I can watch a Boy Meets World episode and still find myself chuckling at the jokes because I'm wrapped up in the story and the characters. Girl Meets World often leaves me feeling distracted by the lessons. Not always. There was a lot I liked, but then there was a lot I didn't. I do think it's a shame they won't be able to go further and perhaps test the boundaries of a more adult network like, say, Freeform where it might fit in better.
