Yeah that’s my fav by them too, I’m seeing them headline a festival in July and can’t wait for it. I haven’t seen them live since the Flash Flood tour.

    NO HOPE KIDS - COMEBACK

    1. Comeback - I like the energy a lot in this opening track. It builds up nice and quickly, but steadily, which is really cool. A lot happens in just barely over 2 minutes. Perfectly packed. And I like the megaphone-type effect in parts of the verses too.
    2. Next In Line - Next In Line is "Next In Line." (I just wanted to say that.) There's some cool really cool guitar riffs across both of these songs so far, and the drums have a really cool energy that makes me want to just pogo jump in the crowd.
    3. Emo - I can see why you guys named this one "Emo." Kinda has the twinkly emo clean guitars going on in the verse. The chorus changes it up though and gives it a more uplifting feel, kinda TBS-ish if they were a little more indie rock/lo-fi. Really digging this one. I especially like that distorted/clipping bridge before the second verse. Sounds especially cool on the drums.
4.You & I - I really like the vocal harmonies on the chorus. I can't pinpoint who the chorus reminds me of... Someone classic... It's gonna drive me crazy... haha. The Beatles maybe? Weezer? I don't know who I'm thinking of, but there's definitely traces of both of those bands in the chorus of this song. I really like it.
    5. All To You - This is pretty little jam. I really like the strings in it. Nice touch! Emotional vocals too, which is always nice for a song like this.
    6. All To You (Reprise) - Cool track! If this had been me though, I could have made this track the intro to lead into "Comeback", which would pretty much bookend the whole EP. But I guess if you listen to the EP on repeat, it has the same effect, so it really works either way, haha.

Solid EP! Not a bad song on here. Good job, friend! (And thanks for suggesting it to me!)

  4. the new one and their second one, plus a couple of the songs i liked off of the last album of theirs you had me listen to.

    A live review:

    Turnover @ Koko, London (24/05/2018)

Last night I went to my first solo gig in four years, the first since I used to get press passes and review them for online publications. Turnover were headlining London’s incredible Koko venue, a 1500 capacity theatre like venue in the heart of London and even though a friend pulled out I didn't want to miss this.

Opening was electronic solo act CC Honeymoon (6). A London native, he combined bands like Joy Division with hyper sexualised lyrics and an even more gothic tone. The crowd were noticeably unsure what to make of it, but they definitely warmed up to him. I found the early songs he played a little lacking, but I did enjoy the last two in particular. It’s not something I would choose to listen to, but I appreciated the effort Turnover made to vary the lineup and include local musicians.

Next up were main support band Men I Trust (8). This band fared a lot better, and actually got very enthusiastic reactions from the crowd. Sounding like John Mayer played at time and half combined with Turnover, this band got people dancing and applauding, and got a surprising amount of crowd interaction for a relatively unknown band on these shores. Singer Emma possesses an amazing voice and it works fantastically well with the blues influenced indie music, whilst bassist Alexis was the other standout musician. The band went off the rapturous applause and seemed visibly giddy with the reception they received, taking a video with the crowd at the end.

Finally, Turnover (9) took to the stage. Opening with 'Super Natural', the band were greeted enthusiastically, and had singalongs going within seconds. Oddly despite the backdrop of their Good Nature artwork, they only actually played four songs from it. 'Super Natural', 'Sunshine Type' and 'Bonnie (Rhythm and Melody)' all went down brilliantly, but 'Pure Devotion' was definitely a major lul in the set, and whilst the songs were played well and the crowd sang along, it’s clear that the majority of the audience wanted to hear the songs from Peripheral Vision. Deeper cuts such as 'Like Slow Disappearing' were greeted like major singles, and the bigger songs like 'New Scream' incited mass singalong and even crowd surfers.

'Take My Head' was a nice change of pace midway through the set, and 'Cutting My Fingers Off' was played towards the end and remains a highlight of any set. The song is incredible on record, but when played live it really goes up to the next level and remains the jewel in the band’s crown.

Ending on a three song run of 'Cutting My Fingers Off', 'Hello Euphoria' and 'Dizzy On The Comedown', the band ended on a massive high with people singing to guitar parts as much as the melodies, and absolutely everyone dancing.

It’s clear from this that Turnover are aware that their last album doesn’t quite translate as well live, and it will be interesting to see how to affects their next release. Adding back in some of the the changes of pace and dynamics of Peripheral Vision could do a lot for them, but even if the next album maintains the style of Good Nature, it’s clear that they have a devoted fanbase, willing to come out on a grey Thursday night to an expensive venue to hear the songs they fell in love with.

This week I was paired up with @Larry David

I have never listened to R.E.M. before and I have only known of them because I see people wearing the bands shirts all the time. I thought it was time to step out of my boundaries musically and check out something that was released around the time I was born.

Immediately off the first song this band reminds me of The Tragically Hip which is sweet. I am wondering if the hip were inspired by this band or vice versa. Either way I know of the hip because I'm Canadian and I can't go very far without hearing the band being brought up or on the radio or something. The tune Losing My Religion"is very relaxed and I connect very close to the lyrics. Near Wild Heaven gives me some George Harrison vibes with the single note guitar riff throughout most of the song. The chorus is great vocally and I appreciate the use of falsetto. Endgame reminds me of Led Zepplins stairway to heaven. I can tell that this band is inspired by some classics for sure. Shiny Happy People starts off with an orchestra then again blasts into a riff that reminds me of Neil Young and again the hip. Belong is probably one of my favorites on the record because I love the way it starts off with just bass/drums before it goes big. Overall I really appreciate the organic sound of this record as well as many other records from the early 90's. It's refreshing to take a step back from the keyboards and just listen to something real like this. I will be sure to show this to my dad as I think he'd really dig this stuff.

Thanks for the rec @Larry David
