Until a a group of guys with guns takes all your stuff and there is no government to protect you. Then they keep doing that and have all the stuff. You need a government that has total control over all people and what is produced for this to work.

 

I don't think I've seen anyone say to do away with our stuff completely.

Seems more like the idea is to start building them here and paying the workers a living wage for making them. So now our iPhones would be made here so we would still have them, it would create jobs for people here, those jobs would pay a livable wage, and the only thing lost would be the insane profit to the company that owns the product. And when I say "lost" I mean given to the people who did the work so they can enjoy their lives, the higher ups would still make money, they just wouldn't always make ALL the money.

Am I misunderstanding something or am I on the right track? Not particularly educated about socialism, but I feel like I am following along much better than Dave

 

Ideally we'd all be locked into pods right? For our safety and to keep everything we work for safe. Basically the Matrix is an ideal situation you are so right.

 

I say we try it out somewhere.. not here. If it's an utter and complete failure I don't want to be a part of it.

Ya man I think you nailed it. Ipods would cost a lot more, so many people couldn't have them, but you wouldn't be exploiting the rest of the world.

With regard to the iphone argument, you don't have to necessarily have Americans be the ones to manufacture it. Who's making it doesn't factor into the equation...what matters is that all the stuff you said be applied to the laborers.

Here's the irony: The whole reason companies like Apple outsource is because American workers do have more rights than those in Asia and India. Many there are not even allowed to unionize. This goes full circle regarding the global capitalism issue. We cannot simply topple capitalism in America because, as in this argument, workers around the world can still be exploited for the purposes of profit.

 

Hating profit is like hating the feces of a shark after it has eaten my arm. The latter is the problem, the former is a product of that action. In less colorful language, my issue is that profit cannot be separated from the processes that allow it to be realized in the marketplace. Without capitalism, profit doesn't exist. No one is exploited; rather, the benefits of production are distributed equally.

 

Nah just saying you need a government to provide police. And a government that makes sure someone isn't taking extra bread.

 

Right. Plus, wouldn't it suck if we had to stop murdering and oppressing people while we waited to see if socialism works?
