I'm so thankful they made Revolution Radio to restore my faith in this band.

 

Dirty Rotten Bastards is probably in my top 5 from the trilogy, super great track

 

Forgot how close these came out to each other. Three Green Day albums in four months should be a good thing.

The problem with saying that Uno was "going for that power pop sound," is that Tre does it better

 

Pretty sure the only song I revisit from the trilogy is Nightlife. And that is literally only because I’ll play it as a joke because that is the worst song this band will ever write.

 

At least skip to "Oh Love" on Uno

I feel like the lyrics on the trilogy are on par with everything he’s written since and that’s not a bad thing, there are a lot of lyrics I love on the trilog

 

But that's just not true.

 

The trilogy in its entirety is one of my favorite releases of all time.

Ehh, I don't quite get how they're so like horrifically, the most awful shit ever level of bad like Jason feels, but I definitely think they're some of the worst lyrics of their career. Billie's writing is always clunky though. Like these hella stupid lyrics from Rev Rad:

I feel like even when his lyrics don’t quite work on paper they almost always make sense in the context of the song

OK, but this is why things like objectivity and truth matter. Because we can actually look at the words and see it's not true.

 

I also just straight up don’t believe art can be looked at objectively. We’ve had this exact discussion before, probably about the trilogy haha

 

This is simple: A random passage from Herman Melville is undeniably better than pulling something from a third grader's notebook. We know this to be true. We can observe this objective fact. Pretending that there's zero objectivity in aesthetic judgment is to pretend a child is as good a writer as David Foster Wallace. They're not.

 

I truly disagree with that way of thinking about art.

 

Cool, some people think the world's flat too. Doesn't make them right just cause they 'disagree.'

 

To be fair, I made a similar argument when the girl I liked in high school told me the poem I wrote about her sucked.

 

I read somewhere that Billie Joe said that the whole cello thing was because he thinks cellos are the saddest sounding instrument in his opinion. So I feel like that lyric is supposed to be just feeling down/out of place when you are far from home
