obviously the WWE would look good if they made some sort of stance saying 'we dont need your money'... but this is the WWE. I dont think the sentence 'we dont need your money' has ever come out of vince's mouth

 

I can’t believe Lars Sullivan has more 5 star matches than Daniel Bryan

 

Lars is better than Okada

 

and no not every title will be defended every month and that's fine.

ALSO im hoping this is the first step of the eventual ending of the brand split...and then the titles will be unified and we'll all be happy again (until they do a brand split again).

 

Nigel McGuiness is on a 2-week break. I think this has to do with steam picking up for stuff in the UK this year

 

Just rewatched the match last night and that whole section is amazing.

But I've never heard a WWE crowd as hot as they were for Gargano/Ciampa. Im not sure we'll see that again for a long time...dont think we've see it since MITB 2011.

Same for me here. IC title was the 2nd best match, womens 3rd, and honestly who cares about every other match that followed, they got progressively shittier.

Also felt like he was kinda low on Bazler/Moon, but looking back, he didnt like their first match either

 

Im hoping its their path towards making TV matter more. They'll want to boost ratings ahead of contract negotiations, so, having fewer PPVs means more has to happen on TV.

For example, Jinder shouldnt be defending the US title on PPVs; he should be feuding and losing on TV eventually.

 

I feel like whatever ranking Meltzer gives to a traditional women's match, if you add .25-.50 to that rating, then you actually have the proper rating for said match.

 

That stuff, Ricochet doing a shooting star press like 20 seconds into the match. Dain and Sullivan both destroying two other guys on top of ladders. Purple Rainmaker off a ladder....

I think they need the brand split. There are way too many guys that already don’t come out. Do you really want Roman to headline two shows a week?

 

Yeah, but most of its womens wrestling in Japan in the 90s. Im not sure you could find a 5* womens match in this millenia

edit: Yeah, none. There have been as many 5* matches in 2018 as there were in the entirety of 2000-2010. We got as many 5* matches in the 3 weeks as any other single year until 2017

No clue, but I don't think so. The first match that comes to mind to make a case for 5 stars would be Bayley and Sasha in Brooklyn, and he gave that 4.5

hot take: Meltzer's star ratings don't mean shit and i'll die baffled at the strict adherence to viewing them as a barometer for quality

Yeah that’s odd. I guess it’s likely because he’s an institution of ratings really. No one else has rated as many matches as he has. But yeah, largely i agree. But I also don’t read dirtsheets or keep up with wrestling journalism at large; if it wasn’t for this thread I wouldn’t know anything that goes on in that sect of the wrestling world.

 

Which is what makes Meltzer have such an allure. Crapping on his star ratings is commonplace and what he gets most complaints for. Idgaf what his ratings are, but I do value his opinion. If you disagree it's not like i'm gonna say you are wrong. Who gives a fuck. They guy is an encyclopedia for the business we love so much and has such an incredible memory. Been doing it like 30 plus years. There is no one else in journalism like him. He himself hates that people invest so much in his match ratings.

 

we should all submit ratings for big shows, average them all out, and determine a score that is representative of the thread

look, i like Meltz (other than his gross, abhorrent handling of Elgin's situation). but people get mad when he rates something higher or lower than they would have, and i can seldom think of a larger waste of my energy
