Many newer acts would KILL to open for an arena show in front of 17,000 people. Bon Jovi did a cool Facebook contest where he had a local band open for him on each stop on his arena tour. Getting to play that kind of show is extremely rare for a lot of these bands.

I actually drove halfway across the country to see Andrew McMahon open for Billy Joel, so I should specify that there are absolutely times when an opener for a huge act can be great. Lol. But too many times I get to a show that has had no promo about any opener and have to wait an hour for what I paid for and the crowd is always annoyed.

Openers are like breadsticks at Olive Garden. If you have too much before the main course you wouldn't be hungry anymore - just very tired

Idk, Last year at Mass Warped they filled a good chunk of the Amphitheatre as headliners that night

I think it’s interesting that people don’t like openers playing lengthy sets. My biggest problem at shows is when I go to see a loaded bill and the opener happens to be a band with 3+ albums, but they’re stuck playing just 7 songs. I totally understand a newer band opening shows, only having one album of content to play, but when the band has 40+ songs on their resume, especially one I enjoy a lot, why wouldn’t I want to see them play longer?

I think the biggest problem I have with short set times is mainly the time between sets. The wait between the support and headline acts shouldn’t be as long as the opener’s set time. I realize it takes time to switch over the set, but that annoys me so much. Minimize that, maximize the time a band can be on the stage. I shouldn’t have to wait 35 minutes for the headliner to take the stage.

The only time I ever had a problem with an opener playing too long (aside from local bands that got added to some shows) was the last time I saw The World is A Beautiful place open up for Into It Over It when they were touring for Standards. I think that The World Is was going through a ton of stuff as a band then (Nicole was still there) but The Sidekicks and Pinegrove were upbeat and then The World Is set felt so long and tedious that it zapped all of the energy out of the room and put a bunch of people, my girlfriend included, essentially to sleep.

My girlfriend still says TWIABP is the worst band she’s ever seen for the same exact reasons.

    Things have changed.

You cannot judge a band's real draw off of a festival set.

Thing is I saw TWIABP open up for IIOI before and they were perfectly fine but just whatever was going on during that tour was pretty noticeable. You could kind of tell they were all kind of hating it and the set just dragged on forever.

i've never had a bad TWIABP set, even when they were at their most pretentious and wankery with the ambient parts. i've seen the band 14 times

Yeah I've seen them be good and I've seen them be bad. Could just kind of tell they were off that night and had a weird vibe about them that show.

    The intrusive whisper fascinates me

My girlfriend saw Cage The Elephant with Silversun Pickups as the opener a couple years ago, and she claims that Silversun played a longer set than CTE did...

At Pierce The Veil's fall 2016 Tour, they played like 14 songs (so like, around an hour) and the direct support, Neck Deep played 12 (at least 45 minutes)

Off topic but does anyone here have experience in lighting? I’m getting a couple lights for a party and I need to learn how to control them how I want

They probably did, their songs are longer. Also believe it was a co headliner.

Silversun is a leagues better band so it's ok

25 minute set times limit the fans to seeing the same 6 songs every single time.

I’m so baffled by the concept of wanting LESS for your money.

I want to see 7 bands, have more fun, for longer, and see new live material or deep cuts that I haven’t seen before. You can always show up late or leave early if there’s too much content for you at a show.

Even when TWIABP have me checking my watch and feeling my legs get sore listening to their new stuff, it's always worth it to hear January 10th and Getting Sodas.

TWIABP at a certain point was definitely the worst opener to have to sit through

Hawthorne heights draws well there too, but they play in front of like 50 people on some of the shows they headline

Olivia Neutron-John was arguably the WORST opening band I've ever had to sit through. Not shitting you: the first 10 minutes of the set was the singer just standing still. Three minutes went by and she turned to her left. Every few minutes, she turned to another direction. Just horrible. Pitchfork loves her, though!

Ideally I prefer a 4 band bill. Headliner gets 75-90 minutes, direct support 45, 2 openers at 30 a piece.
