As somebody who has not seen the Shining, I loved that part. I had so much fun with this movie. I didnt get most of the references, but it wasnt like shoving it in my face so I didnt mind it. Only a few that perked my ears up, but I thought all of the allusions were used very well. I was more in it for the story. Loved the world-building of the Oasis and was impressed with the seamlessness between cutting in and out of the Oasis and real world.

The love story was somewhat weak but not grating. I think there so many topics a movie like this couldve touched upon and it didnt, but I think the ones it was attempting to convey hit well.

Honestly what was really lacking for me was a memorable John Williams theme/score to pair with Spielbergs visual magic again. Silvestri had some good moments and some obvious callbacks which were fun to hear, but kind of nothing special to me. It really wasnt even featured that heavily in the mix it didnt seem. I think John could've added a lot to this (but really he could everything i guess).

Hate to say it, but came out of the theater feeling pretty disappointed. Overall it was enjoyable I guess. Wasn’t a big fan of how they wrote the story. Some of the writing/ dialogue was terrible. All of the characters were written so thin. Wish they would have included more detail overall like the book.

The book could’ve been made into an awesome mini series/tv show.

I agree with some of this, but theres no possible way to include more detail and give the amount of attention that a book can.

True. I get that they have to cut a lot out. It just felt like all the characters and relationships were so rushed and had zero depth.

I might go see it again with moviepass sometime to see if I enjoy it anymore since my hype for it has settled.

Its also impossible to have that metaphorical bar that the book set for characters, story, etc... and not compare the two considering its the same sequence of events.

lol I was literally typing how the visuals stacked up to your imagination of the oasis. I agree. I loved everything visually with the movie. Oasis and all and the action was so much fun.

How did the mystery/clues aspect of the movie compare. I really liked it but I could see it being better in the book.

The keys/gates are handled a lot different in the movie than the book. The way they are in the book would’ve been tough to translate to film so I get why they were altered.

Everything inside the oasis was boss. Great stuff. But everything in the real world was...was bad.

saw it last night, I loved it. had such a good time. the story is simple, but I think it works. they definitely cut some stuff out of the book, and made some changes. some of the changes I think were definitely for the better, and some of the changes like the key challenges I thought were just as fun. some of the challenges in the book I don't think would have translated well to film.

I'm definitely one of those people that doesn't need the movie to be just like the book, I think the book and the movie stand on their own very well.

This was quite fun. The technical work on anything in the Oasis is outstanding.

This was ok. I felt it was a bit too long and I even feel asleep for about 10 min (mind you I was pretty tired so that’s my bad). I’m also not a big gamer so I feel like I couldn’t appreciate it enough in that aspect. With that being said, some scenes and sequences were incredible and already have me itching to watch it at least one more time the shining sequence, first race and final fight are all replaying in my head. Especially the iron giant stuff. I would still love a live action version

This movie would be awesome if I was under 16...but it's catering to adults and nostalgia. Odd dynamic.

Had a great time. All the changes from the book were either lateral moves or actually made it better. Visually stunning. Nobody has a better command of kinetic action sequences, especially chase scenes, than Spielberg. Looking forward to seeing it again.

I enjoyed it. Felt it went on a bit towards the end though.

This was enjoyable, read the book about 2 years ago and noticed a lot of major differences (guessing in order to cram the story into a 2+ hour movie). I will say the most enjoyable part (and surprised how much they got away with for a PG13 movie) was The Shining simulation

  20. This is a lot of fun and visually stunning. I like it better than the book. Cline isn't a great writer in my opinion, and the book was a slog sometimes.
