that thing you said about the band referencing other bands... do they really do that in a song? :cringe:

Well I've never really cared about reviews, especially when it comes to my favorite band. I don't let reviews dictate what I like or dislike. As for the next song, It would have to be pretty bad for me to think it sucks, because I'm a complete fan boy when it comes to blink haha. But, with how great Bored To Death is, I can't see the next REAL song being terrible, or the album for that matter.

Yes. They've said they reference a number of punk rock bands from California. I don't understand why this is a bad thing.

Agreed. There are ways to make references in songs without having it be corny/cringe worthy.

Also, have blink ever gotten good reviews on their music before in the first place? I thought that major publications didn't take them seriously, especially back in their prime.

  6. What's the best song that's ever referenced another band from this scene? "I Want to Save You" or "Konstantine" by SoCo? "Boys of Summer" (cover) by The Ataris? It works once. Does it work multiple times on album? On a song? If it's the band name itself ... I think you get one. If it's using lyrics from the bands to work into your own songs as an ode — then you get more chances to make it work.

  7. Average around a 7 for their career, which is considered "positive."

Really? That's interesting. I always thought that the untitled album was the only one that actually got fairly good reviews, or maybe I'm just completely off base. I was really young at the time when all those albums were released.

  9. Untitled 71 average

    Neighborhoods .... 69 average.

    Heheh.

If Untitled only has a 2 point higher average rating than Neighborhoods, that only gives me more reason to completely disregard reviews lol

Still though, I am a little bummed that some of these critics are saying that there's a lot of filler on the album. I doubt I'm gonna consider any of them filler, given how much I love the band, but it just bums me out a little because I really wanna see this album do well.

i feel like blink made a huge mistake by releasing both jokes songs before release. A couple short, dumb, interlude type songs have now been scrutinized more than they ever should have. It's just bad PR for a band full of 40 year olds trying to make a comeback in today's music industry.

That makes sense, and agree with +44. I also think it was weird to release the 2 joke songs after first single, really doesn't make sense. Not sure how the label would be ok/let them release the 2 joke songs back to back. Maybe they're hoping their younger fans are loving the joke songs? All that said it doesn't take away, at all, my excitement for this album.

  14. But the argument is if people should disregard reviews or not, but what they do. And that album was well received on release. The AP.net review was a 9.0. Thomas hates it now. Haha.

I know a bunch of bands in the vein of NOFX and Rancid have always done it and I've been a big fan of it.

Huh? How was that weird? We're discussing punk bands referencing other punk bands in their songs. I named two bands that have done it on more than one occasion where I enjoyed it. How could that possibly be a weird way to answer that question?

  19. You said you know a bunch in the vein of NOFX and Rancid. Didn't know you actually meant those two bands, as I said: weird way to respond to that question. And I asked what's the best song that did it ... because I was curious where it works. Also, I put Blink on a different level than both of those bands ... who, by and large, are way past their prime ... so, again, if it's them, never mind.

I've always loved NFG's "Remember the time we realized Thriller was our favorite song."

The referencing in the bridge from A Praise Chorus is a favorite.

Since I'm bored, here's another one of my favorites:

"Dear you, the vinyl it was blue
Stalking poor Blake commiserating drunks at sea
Do you remember when Jawbreaker rocked "The boat?"
