Outside of it being a very cool concept (filming over 12 or so years), I will never understand the hype for Boyhood.

 

I agree with your 2017 pick, though I'm surprised to see it usurp Personal Shopper's place.

 

I’m hoping they rig the awards show this year after seeing all the buzz about last years once in a lifetime moment so they’re like “okay the only way to top it is to award a movie that wasn’t nominated and that no one watching the Academy Awards saw... okay Personal Shopper it is, our best picture of 2017”

 

I always hoped some presenter would go rogue and announce the winner of someone who wasn't nominated, make it seem completely serious, and then just walk away.

Life Is Beautiful also got a Best Picture nomination in 1998.

 

i wonder if there was too much lobbying confusion/split on pattinson that he got nominated for nothing after giving very worthy performances for two different categories this year

 

Yeah, same, I think it's one of the most overrated movies I've ever seen. The gimmick is really all it is, it's mostly a mess and only has one really good performance in it (Ethan Hawke).

Yeahhhh I really disagree. There’s only one scene I take issue with in Boyhood and other than that I think it’s pretty fucking fantastic.

 

I had a hard time relating to Boyhood but that's more me thinking every coming of age story about boys becoming men (men becoming wolves) is supposed to be my experience

 

Like most of Linklater's work, it's a meditation on the passage of time, and the long lasting impact of significant moments, moments big and small, that inform us and shape us. It's about how little control we have, how people and places weave in and out of our lives, sometimes permanently, and it's about navigating your own battle with the forces around you and how you do take control of your experience in spite of the randomness of life and the linear, unstoppable march of time. It's about developing a moral compass and a philosophical outlook, it's about our relationships with those closest to us and the give and take, push and pull between them, and how time changes the balances in those relationships, and morphs those relationships as people develop into different people. It's beautiful and moving and powerful and I adore it, though I'll admit there's not much defense I have when some people tell me they thought it was "boring", but there's just not anywhere to go from there, really, while admitting that it's not as driven by lively, philosophical conversation and comedy as the Before films or Dazed & Confused/Everybody Wants Some!!

 

I think it's dull, but it's mainly because I didn't really find any of the characters to be interesting, particularly the main character. It's supposed to show the moments and the people within them shape who we become, but the main character seems to develop less and less of a personality as time goes on.

 

The conversation about Boyhood, or almost any other major film that gets suggested as a big winner, is an example of how much harm the awards season does. It both rose too fast because journalists were looking for a story and focused on the unique filming process, and then torn apart by the same machine under some awfully silly conversation. The accusations of racism in Boyhood were particularly shameful, pushed because of an awkward set of two minor scenes meant to show the mother's impact on other people but had connotations of white savior all over it.

 

Boyhood is a perfectly fine movie but the only thing special about it is the fact that it was filmed over 12 years imo. I do wish I could have felt for it the way everyone else did! I hate being the asshole contrarian abt the darling movies.

 

Linklater is such a good filmmaker that I was shocked by how utterly negative my reaction to Boyhood was. But he bounced back majorly with Everybody Wants Some!!, which was great.

 

Love Linklater, but Boyhood was pretty underwhelming. I honestly don't remember much about it. Might revisit it one of these days, but I remember it feeling dull for the most part.

Lady Bird is my favorite of the ones I've seen still

I'll try to catch Call Me By Your Name and Phantom Thread, but watching them all seems like a chore at this point

 

Both of those were enjoyable though.

I just finished Darkest Hour. I’ve now seen the 9 big ones. I enjoyed all of them for different reasons to varying levels. I think all are worth seeing if you can manage it. It is crunch time haha
