Does Soundbar still have the little balcony area? I’ve loved being right on the railing up there and having a perfect view.

Oh well if I’m gonna talk about the other DMV venues...

-Love 9:30 Club. Great atmosphere, easy to get to, great sound
-Been to Howard Theatre once but I really liked the historic atmosphere it gave off, it has a cool vibe
-Only been to U Street Music Hall twice but I’ve really enjoyed it both times
-Echostage is alright, I’ve been three times and had a pretty easy time getting there and parking and it had a good sound
-Have actually never been to Black Cat somehow
-For big shows, I actually quite like seeing shows at the Verizon Center. Great sound and views for the most part. Do not like Baltimore Arena at all, and I fucking hate driving to Jiffy Lube Live with all my heart, though I like the place once I’m actually inside

    I’m sure I’m forgetting a few

EDIT: Forgot Merriweather Post Pavilion which is literally 10 minutes from my house. Really like that place

The social is my favorite venue too. And I thought Club Firestone changed to Venue 578 or something. I’ve never been to Uncle Lou’s or Wills Pub but I’ve been to Bombshells Tarven and it was terrible.

I've lived in the Chicago area for 2.5 years now and iv'e visited alot of the venues you mentioned. There are many other iv'e yet to visit so thanks for the info about them.

    Some notes:

    - Subterranean has a big container of cold water near the bar for everyone to drink out of and that is just awesome on their part.
    - For HOB i usually find parking with SpotHero around 8 dollars, not far from there (there's a huge parking garage like 3-4 minutes walk from there). I don't like going there because it's usually a sold out show and they pack the place like crazy.
    - I really don't like the Aragon. Lots of people complaining that it takes forever to get in there, missing opening bands. Place looks amazing but sound sucks and it's way overpriced, even for a music venue. Plus, it's a part of Live Nation which means insane added ticket fees.
    - Iv'e been to the Bottom Lounge a few times, always great. Again, when it's sold out it's usually too packed for me but other than that it's cool since it's one of those places when you get a decent view, doesn't matter where you are on the floor.
    - I have been to the Concord 3-4 times and i always had a good time there, i really don't see why people always complain about that place.
    - I went to The Forge 2 times since it's re-branding and it's much better then what it was before (I went there when it was known as "The Tree and it was a total clusterf*ck).
    - The Space is a nice intimate venue for an acoustic type show, Durty Nellie's is awesome, HOME Bar is nice (though i haven't been there for like a year). I live in Skokie so i wish there was a venue that was a little closer to me.

Also, i never get why people complain about the security all the time. Places have rules and if people can't follow them, why are they so surprised when they get in trouble for it? Then again, i come from a country where there are armed security guards in every corner...

    Des Plaines here. Hi, neighbor.

I generally don't mind security if they're just there to enforce rules and keep people from getting too rowdy. It's when they're being dicks that it bothers me. The few times I've gone to the Concord security has always been rude to people just trying to get into the venue. Might be just the nights I've gone, but I've never had a pleasurable experience there compared to venues of similar size in the city (Metro, Double Door when it was open, hell, even House of Blues).

    She haunts the roads

And hey, how about some West Coast representation in here! Started going to shows in the Seattle area, I'll start off here...
I drive about an hour to get to shows here, so I'm not super familiar with the names of neighborhoods. Most of these venues are either in the tourist-y part of town of the college-y part.

The Showbox: One of my favorite venues ever. 1,200 cap. GA floor pit with several tiered sections behind it. Can be hard to find a good spot from upper level, but the floor is massive so there's pretty much no reason not to be on it. Great sound, great crowds, great vibes.

Showbox SoDo: Not one of my favorites. A few miles down the road from the Showbox proper, it's right next to Safeco Field, our baseball stadium. SoDo is clearly a converted warehouse, can hold about 1,500. Ground is completely flat, so really no way to get a good view unless you're up close, and even then, not really. Sound was okay.

Neumos: 400-500 cap venue that seems to nab all the major artists that can't play the Showbox. Has a downstairs (Barboza) that I haven't been to, an adjacent bar, and (majorly revamped) restaurant right out front. Surrounded by lots of good bars/restaurants. Venue itself is okay, always crowded and difficult to get a good view if you wanna be close. Never tried upstairs since it always looks crowded AF. Sounds good.

El Corazon: Pretty much THE punk rock dive in Seattle and where I went to my very first concert. Covered in stickers, holes in the ceiling, stupid support beam on stage right, but it doesn't matter, always good times and vibes here. All ages, adjacent bar has tiny stage of its own (The Funhouse), also added a pretty decent restaurant out front.

The Crocodile: About 300 cap, also has upstairs with overhead view. Floor is decent as long as you don't get stuck in the alcove to the right. Has an overpriced pizza restaurant next door. Mostly if you wanna stand and drink at a show, except when I saw Refused here, when I almost died.

Paramount Theater: Saw Book of Mormon here, all purpose performance hall. In good shape, nice amenities, murals on the ceilings, good sound.

Moore Theater: Old, ooooold theater on the edge of downtown. Saw Tim & Eric here last year, could only afford nosebleeds, which were way, way, way up. Good view of stage undercut by how narrow and stacked the seats are, not great if you have vertigo. Also, like many old buildings in the area, doesn't have air conditioning, had to leave an hour in cuz it was August and I was dying.

Neptune: Super cool venue with blue-green color scheme and cast iron faces of Neptune in front of the light fixtures! Great sound, also has a tea bar up the street with the best tea I've ever tasted.

Chop Suey: Small space with jumbled layout and confusing decor, seems like they're trying to lean away from the culturally appropriating look it probably started out with. Only been here once when it way undersold, had a fun time but could see how that could really change if it was a sold out show. Had an amazing burger here, though! (Also, they host Emo Nite here.)

The Vera Project: Really cool DIY venue right next to the Space Needle. For a non-profit in an expensive spot, it's actually quite spacious and clean. I've never seen it sold out. All ages, with a lot of changing art on the walls and little exhibitions. Always happy whenever I get to go here.

Studio 7: In the industrial part of town, pretty much books any and all metal acts that come through. Massive space, both downstairs and upstairs. Saw The Chariot on their farewell tour here (only my 2nd show!) and I can't imagine a better venue for it.

    Victory Lounge: It's a bar. It's cramped.

Marymoor Park: Just outside of Seattle in a town called Redmond, probably my favorite outdoor venue I've ever been to. Lawn area totally doesn't suck, it's a nice raised hill around the seated area that gives everyone a good view. Surrounded by trees. Can't bring your own drinks, but good food trucks. One of the chillest places for a summer show I've ever been to.

Key Arena: Right next to the Space Needle. It's an arena. It's okay, pretty navigable. Seats are a little on the small side, but good layout with good views.

Of the few places around I still haven't been in the area...

White River Amphitheater (heard nothing but bad things)
The Gorge (heard nothing but good things, but far away. Sasquatch fest is here every year)
Tacoma Dome (drive by it every time I head north)
    WaMu Theater
    Sunset Tavern
    Tractor Tavern

oh fuck forgot u hall, i hate that place with a passion for actual band shows, since the shape is horrible and you can't see anything and the sound is bad (it ruined toe and julien baker for me). pretty fun for DJ sets tho

even that's crazy to me. to me, philly is very much a "northern" city in the general NYC-ish area, but the fact that it's so close to DC which we consider a "southern city" is nuts. pretty sure the entire population of canada lives in the boston <> DC corridor which is probably not all that long of a drive.

No wonder so many bands just tour the same 15 cities in the NE all the time, haha.

anyways, to get montreal in the mix for the 3 posters from this area:
casa del poppolo: iconic venue, best vibe, sound, atmosphere, aesthetic for small (100 and under) shows. Plus they have amazing vegan burritos, and arcade fire did the record release for funeral there. love playing there.
l'esco: best ~250 cap in the city. cool bar, very good look, great beers on tap, good menu, sound is really good too. it's a very narrow venue so it's easy to fill up, but the doors are at the front and back of the venue, so it's easy to step outside.
sala rossa: best ~500 cap venue. cool old theater look, no obstructed views. sala and casa are both owned by the bassist (?) of godspeed.
Corona theatre: best "big" venue, around 1,000 cap, a little less. cool neighbourhood, located on the ground floor (which is a big one here), vintage threatre.

everything else is either a big commercial venue which, IMO are all the same, or areans which are what they are. Couple DIY spots too that are either unnamed, change their names, or something.

Have not gotten to check out many shows in Portland, as it's even farther away from me, but I've been a few times. @TJ Wells, @koryoreo, and other PDX locals would probably be better off covering this, but of the couple venues I've been to.

Analog Cafe: Where I end up going practically every time. Downstairs restaurant with small stage, upstairs with about 250 cap room and stage about half an inch off the ground. I can respect the commitment to DIY, but it's always crowded, cramped, stuffy, and hard to see anything.

Star Theater: Saw a last minute comedy show here, so it was far from sold out. Surprising in that instead of being wide, venue is long and narrow. Small seated VIP area right at the front of the stage, then different levels of standing room. Had a nice enough time while I was there, but I can only imagine how pissed I would have been if it was sold out.

You and I have very different views on these venues.

The Social - Cool that its small, but I think the sound isn’t that great in there.

Back booth (Soundbar) - A lot more fun and room for a crowd.

House of Blues - by far my favorite venue. Sounds great, a lot of room to move, plus you can go to Disney before he show if you have a pass. Never had problems with security there.

Hard Rock - Fun, but huge venue. Free parking for FL residents after 6.

    Also,
The Beacham - Right next to The Social, but bigger and better sound.
