I have mixed feelings about whether they're exploitative or conservation oriented

 

Tbh I don't dislike animals but I'm not super into them either. I feel the same way about zoos as I do national landmark type things. I look and it's like yup... that exists... that's definitely a thing. Okay two seconds have passed and now what??? I guess ill look at the next thing now... and yep thats a thing too.

 

I'm like that at museums " okay that's a Warhol cool next" I can only look at a painting for like 30 seconds

 

I went to the coast with a friend last year and she wanted to look at all these natural landmarks and notable lil nature areas and it was so hard to pretend like I cared. I can appreciate like a beautiful hiking trail (even tho I hate hiking) or a pretty sunset or a nice view but I guess with those things I have more of a purpose than "let's drive all the way out to this thing and then just stare at it for a bit and leave."

 

I have mixed feelings about them. I have met a few people who work at zoos and they say that basically all of the animals are born in captivity so it's all they've known and are comfortable in. Still, the idea of parading exotic animals in open cages is weird to me.

Then I fed a giraffe some romaine lettuce and it was incredible so I walk through them with a lot of HOW SHOULD BE I FEELING ABOUT THIS?! thoughts.

 

Yeah, for the record, I don't think anyone should feel bad for going to a zoo. I'm not even sure what I think about them exactly, I just know I feel sad when I'm there. I think sanctuaries are amazing and wonderful places, but public zoos sort of make me feel uncomfortable. Like when there are crowds of people staring at a tiger that's in this tiny ass enclosure, I dunno, it feels sort of barbaric haha. I think it also really depends on the zoo. The San Diego Zoo is massive and well taken care of. It's the zoos in bumfuck nowhere that really concern me.

same, i generally enjoy zoos for the first half hour, but then reality sets in for me on the living situations for the animals and i get uneasy. i have maybe been to a zoo like twice in the last few years, and just because my nephews enjoy them i suck it up.

As a future (hopeful) zoo vet, I feel the need to share my opinion here. While zoo history has plenty of examples of exploitive behavior, any AZA-accredited zoo is mandated to provide for their animals in the absolute best way we know how, and it’s always getting better. Zoos will go to great lengths to maintain accreditation. Obviously, not all zoos are equal, nor do all animals handle captivity equally. Rest assured however that even the “lesser” zoos that may not be outwardly doing much for conservation may be doing their part simply by holding animals being used for breeding plans. It’s also one of the few industries where you can be sure the people care about their job. Nobody willingly chooses to clean up after elephants in January. Lastly, entertainment value aside, these animals are ambassadors for their species and should serve as a reminder that their natural habitats are not a safe place. If anyone has any other questions or worries I’d be happy to talk further. I’ve worked and toured several zoos and aquariums and it’s what I study now. Soapbox over. Visit zoos.

The oregon zoo has grilled cheese with tillamook cheese so that's cool. And white cherry icees which is my favorite flavor. But I went to a zoo once idk if it was the oregon one or the San Diego one but there were peacocks walking around and I DON'T THINK SO. My list of jerkiest animals:

Turkeys
Goats

 

Peacocks are so entitled because of their gorgeous plumage.
