    hmmm

Deftones have very much earned the right to go in whatever direction they want to musically but I don't want anyone other than Date producing the next record. He knows how to capture their sound better than anyone else.

I think they haven't gone back to Terry because they're so comfortable with him, and they end up just screwing around instead of recording. I really hope they return to him eventually, though. He captures their sound perfectly.

Edit: pretty much exactly what @JM95 said haha

I think the following songs from Gore are fantastic additions to the catalog:
    Acid Hologram
    Hearts/Wires
    (L)MIRL
    Gore
    Phantom Bride
    Rubicon

I still like all of the other songs on the album, but those are the ones I can see myself adding to my "best of" playlists from now on.

Soooo.... I'm making a Deftones mix for my therapist.

He saw I was wearing one their shirts, asked about them, pulled up Spotify on his phone, and listened to about a minute of "Prayers/Triangles" at my recommendation.

Not like he asked for this, but since I'm very compulsive about making playlists, I didn't need much of an excuse.

I realize I'm leaving a ton of the 'milestone' songs off the list here, but I wanted to include mostly my favorites, and I had to leave about half of those off too. (Burning it to a CD-R, so 80 min limit.) Either way, I was focusing mostly on the 'flow' of the thing. I'm about halfway through listening to it and it seems solid to me so far...

1.) Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)
    2.) Hexagram
    3.) Hole in the Earth
    4.) Beauty School
    5.) Rocket Skates
    6.) Pink Cellphone
    7.) When Girls Telephone Boys
    8.) Sextape
    9.) Phantom Bride
    10.) Rubicon
    11.) Entombed
    12.) Lotion
    13.) Teenager
    14.) Goon Squad
    15.) What Happened to You?
    16.) Rivière
17.) Be Quiet and Drive (acoustic)

Whaddya think? Personal playlists you'd make yourselves?

@GEM37 I'm in the process of making a playlist, which I'm hoping to have done this weekend. I like yours, other than Pink Cellphone haha.

I'll try making one this weekend, but here are some songs I'd make sure to include:

    My Own Summer
    Be Quiet And Drive
    Digital Bath
    Korea
    Passenger
    Hexagram
    Minerva
    Bloody Cape
    Hole In The Earth
    Beware
    Cherry Waves
    Diamond Eyes
    Royal
    You've Seen The Butcher
    Sextape
    Entombed
    Rosemary
    Acid Hologram
    Hearts/Wires
    Phantom Bride
    Rubicon

Edit: This is probably too long for 80 minutes, but it actually might be close considering it's 21 songs.

    Prayers/Triangles Prestigious

(I mean this only as pure comedy)

Having Pink Cellphone on there may give your therapist a totally different view in regards to your headspace haha.

Nothing from Adrenalin? Something from there like Root or Nosebleed would be solid; possibly after Lotion. But then you would have to remove something..... What Happened To You isn't my favorite song of theirs so that's what I would remove if it were me.

Haha, I know man! I mean, I knew Pink Cellphone had that ending, but listening back to it... Yeah, it might be a little weird. But, i do still love the song, and I don't believe in censorship, sooo...

As for Adrenaline, I just couldn't find something that I felt fit. I personally would've picked Lifter, but there's already so many heavy songs in the mix, I just didn't think it added a different 'shade' to the dynamics. (Really, really wanted to fit in Elite and Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event, but cut them for much the same reasons.)

I also wouldn't want to lose my Lotion/Teenager transition, which I love! I love how Lotion just cuts off, and I wanted it to slam from insane screaming into that fuzzy, acoustic guitar. Worked as good as I hoped!

(Also, What Happened to You is AMAZEBALLS!! Was a grower for me, but Erh Meh Gerd, that build up! Soooo gooood...)

I dunno, man. Deftones make some long songs

...just did the math, and yeah that runs at least 95 min. Step 2: find which ones you cut, and then arrange them in a cool-ass way!

(Much love for Korea and Cherry Waves, btw!)

Yeah I was thinking of which songs run about five minutes. Idk if I'd keep Cherry Waves or not at this point, but damn this is difficult. I'd wanna keep Passenger, Beware, and Rosemary. I think Hearts/Wires and Phantom Bride run for five minutes as well

Here's what I've got right now. I still need to take it out for a walk to listen to it from front to back, but I really like what I have going here right now.

    1. Korea
    2. Hole In The Earth
    3. My Own Summer (Shove It)
    4. Royal
    5. Tempest
    6. Digital Bath
    7. Hearts/Wires
    8. You've Seen The Butcher
    9. Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away)
    10. Rosemary
    11. Bloody Cape
    12. Sextape
    13. Phantom Bride
    14. Rubicon
    15. Passenger
    16. Hexagram
    17. Beware

You said you could only make it 80 minutes long, which reminded me a lot of @Craig Ismaili and his "ultimate setlist" theme he has going now, so this would be my ultimate setlist for Deftones at the moment. I envision the main set ending after Passenger and then the two-song encore would consist of Hexagram and Beware.

Really bummed I had to cut Cherry Waves though I'm not sure what I'd cut out to include it. I guess Hole In The Earth because, realistically, you'd be lucky enough to see even one song from SNW played live let alone two. Also, not sure I included enough hits from Diamond Eyes, so maybe I'd just cut Hole In The Earth and leave Cherry Waves off to include Diamond Eyes or Rocket Skates instead. SNW is a top 4 album for me from this band, but it's difficult to realistically include much from it on an ultimate/dream setlist, especially if I were to show it to someone who had never listened to Deftones before.

Dude, SNW is possibly my all-time favorite album, and if they did a tour where they played that front to back, I think I could die and go to heaven! (Also: would've liked to include "Combat," one of their most underrated songs, but I feel "Goon Squad" does kind of the same thing...)

I like your playlist. Definitely feels like it lists more towards the 'ominous' side, haha!

  15. Deathco_019

    Drummer

I really like Combat. SNW was such a grower for me, but it's in my too 4 Deftones albums now.

As for my playlist being in the more "ominous" side, I thought about that a lot too. I feel like it leans a bit much in the atmospheric side of the band is lacking in the bangers this band could write, which is probably why dropping Hole In The Earth for Rocket Skates would probably be a good idea. It's tough though, the atmospheric side to Deftones is what really draws me to their music. Those songs tend to be my favorites from them, but they do have some really great songs that are more straightforward.

@Deathco_019 I love your playlist. I think it's cool that it kicks off with "Korea," which was their opener during the White Pony era. I'm making my playlist right now, but I'm trying to decide if I want to go the "ultimate setlist" route, and make some painful cuts, or make it longer and include everything I love.

  17. Deathco_019

    Drummer

Glad you enjoy it! I still need to test it out haha. I say do the "ultimate setlist" route. It's tough but it feels oddly satisfying. I guess it's because bands must feel that way all the time when making setlists. Feeling the struggle and the challenge makes it fun imo

Korea was such an excellent choice for an opener during that time. This version from the Convention Hall in Asbury Park might be my favorite captured from the White Pony era. I was lucky enough to see them a couple times touring for that album, but I still kick myself for not grabbing tickets for this show before they sold out.

I think my playlist needs a little tweaking to it as far as flow goes. Also think I'm gonna drop Hole In The Earth and Passenger for either Diamond Eyes or Rocket Skates and Knife Prty or Change.

Looking at your list, I'd personally keep Passenger, since it fits in with slightly slower, more atmosphere-heavy vibe you're going for. In that case, if you're dropping "Hole" I'd swap it for Knife Prty, for those reasons.

Personally, when I make a playlist, I try to include as many 'shades' as possible, trying to showcase the variety of sounds a band is capable of covering, as well focusing of the flow and trying to include some personal favorites, usually ones I don't feel get enough attention.

But you're right! There is something so strangely satisfying about making these mixes. Even when you have to shed songs you love, locking into something that you know is unique and has a flow is its own weird little sort of high. A lot of the time I make them just to entertain myself...
