I think these guys have gotten better in most aspects as they've gone along. I think the spot that NCTH falls short, other than production becuase we've literally talked that point to death, was in the narrative thread running between the songs. But that album also wasn't trying to tie everything together the same way Suburbia and TGG did.

I thought the narrative thread throughout the album was the strongest so far.

I think the big cause of the "stangant" complaints was cigarettes and saints coming out. That song is fucking phenomenal and I remember people thinking it was a gigantic change up and NCTH would be a lot of that sound.

But still TWY has always been progressing album after album. Like I don't see how you could say TGG is the same as Suburbia or Suburbia being the Upsides.

I remember being blown away multiple times when I heard devil in my blood stream for the first time and even more surprised when realizing what they were doing on funeral.

 

C&S is this bands best song by far

 

Well, paradoxically NCTH is both stagnant and very innovative. I think that's the point of contention here. Even within songs both the push and pull can happen at the same time. There was a clear intention to move away from what came before but also there was a tentativeness when it came to the music (the lyrics I think we can argue don't suffer from that) that made NCTH suffer from a certain awkwardness : lots of great ideas but held back by godawful mixing and maybe slight shortcomings on production and also what seems to be fear. I love the album but it SOUNDS unsure of itself, if that makes sense. It also yielded some of their strongest songs. They just need a goddamn remix.

 

Also when I read that the book was going to have 200 pages of content my little autistic head exploded. I think I probably spent weeks cross-referencing the booklet in Suburbia with twitter, blogs and tour dates and this time they're giving it all to me on a plate. This is catered to the way I enjoy media

Cigarettes and Saints being released as a single was a case of what I call “Twin Size Mattress syndrome”. Where a single released before is so good that the rest of the album, while being pretty good/great, can’t possibly hold up to that standard.
