It still matters haha. It's still a bad contract But I get why you need to talk yourself into it. I'll be doing the same when Bortles gets 25 million a year.

I'm sure it'll be a year to year option deal...starting in like 2022.

Houston gave up a 2nd rounder to get rid of their cap problem.

It's easy to be critical of a massive move like that when it's made by a 1 year GM but eh, it'll probably work out, he's pretty good

So it'll basically be a two year deal. That's good.

Also, thats not to say what Chicago might have signed (or extended) if they didnt waste $20mil on Glennon. What Minnesota might have been able to do had they not traded a 1st and spent $18mil/yr on Bradford.

Especially when you can own the guy for a year at $23mil and make him actually prove he's a 16-game starter. And sign basically the same deal next offseason.

The argument for signing a QB early is you get them cheaper (for example, get Kirk for 5/95 instead of 5/150 2 years later). 49ers paid what Jimmy G is worth, at best, a year from now

There is some value in being a terrible team for a couple of years, spending no money, so you can afford to drop fuck you money in an offseason

I’m comparing him to Jimmy Garroppolo. Sorry, no, Wentz is not ready to make 3- and 4-step reads. He’s very good and I’m not saying he isn’t.

You just won the Super Bowl lol you don’t need to cry about me saying Wentz has to make less decisions becuase of an offense that relies on power / off tackle running and misdirection. It’s not meant to discredit him. But Jimmy is doing it in a scheme that puts all the pressure on the QB to read the whole field and decide between 3-4 options.

I feel like with Jimmy G worst case is that he's not QUITE at that value and restructures happen

He doesn't seem like a locker room issue like Brock was so I don't see SF having to go the Houston route if it doesn't work out

And he also doesn't seem like he'll completely fall flat. It's not like he's having a major scenery change after the contract

They won a super bowl with who? A QB who gets paid a lot of money and cripples the team development?

No they won the Super Bowl with Nick Foles which furthers my point that the scheme does not ask intensive decision making of its quarterbacks. Accuracy and pocket presence is required, absolutely and Wentz is fantastic at those. But honestly most of what impresses me when I watch Wentz is, how well he handles a broken play. It’s like he plays better when shit is going wrong.

I like Wentz anyway dude haha you totally misread my tone on that.

Jimmy just has spectacular vision and one of the quickest throwing mechanics in the league. Hard to compare any 20-something QB to what he has learned by being a Pats backup... because he’s literally doing what Brady does. He probably wouldn’t be as good as he is if he was drafted anywhere else.

So what you're saying is that having a good coach is more important than having a good QB and even if you have an MVP level QB, you can still just as easily win simply by having a balanced team?

And solved it in one season. Literally the first time it's ever had to come to that, and it didn't really have to come to that.

I see where you’re going but not quite.

Good coach is more important yes. I wouldn’t say you can “just as easily” win with a balanced team though. You have to have an ELITE supporting cast. Balanced isn’t enough. Balanced team with an okay quarterback? That’s the Cincinnati Bengals most of this last decade and all they did was lose playoff games.

The Eagles defense and running game are ELITE and so are the Jags, that’s why we win despite Bortles/Foles, but for a team in SF position? A top end QB is like a shortcut to being a competitive team again. Building an elite team is the LONG-way, only reason it happened overnight for the Jags, is because we got lucky that a lot of top dollar free agents & top draft picks panned out at the same time.

SF is still rebuilding with an insane amount of cap space due to rookie contracts, like we were before we signed Campbell, Malik and Bouye. And they have some guys that aren’t getting re-signed either way. So I wouldn’t say this signing gets in the way of them developing a team with some balance. It’s not gonna sweat their roster any more than they already have to shed & replace it. If anything this just means they won’t have as much free agent money as we had for our rebuild... but they are best drafting team in the NFL so do they even need it?

But, as an overall team they are far from elite, they have good pieces but some clear holes as well. So the quicker path to success for them is to lock down a QB who can carry a less talented team, and who can make it easier on the coaching staff, by getting the most out of every play and attacking the defense wherever they are weakest.

Now, I wouldn’t make that argument for the Jags; that is not the path to success for us at all. We chose to build an elite team first instead. Why? Because our QB sucks and we are stuck with him haha, basically the only reason. If we had a Jimmy G type QB he would be my priority.

I'm also not "talking myself into" the deal, I had zero concerns about the APY. I just wanted to lock him into the long term deal asap.
