catching up on @Sheaver10's recs from *cough* this week *cough*

del paxton - all day, every day, all night

del paxton are one of those bands that i've been hearing a lot of good things about for years, but for one reason or another i've just never gotten around to checking them out. i'm an idiot. this band wears their influences on their sleeve and i love it. the way the vocalist delivers lines like "all the one ways and all the wrong ways" on 'my other' or "all day, every day, all night" on 'greenhouse' reminds me of the promise ring whereas some of the guitar parts on tracks like 'wrong distance' and 'sixes and sevens' remind me of braid. loads of great 90's emo throwback jams on this album, which rules, but i also really appreciated that they incorporated some electronic drums on 'coast to coast am' just to switch things up a bit. so, yeah, i liked this album a lot!

the second album that @Sheaver10 recommended to me was:

    cende - #1 hit single

this album immediately hooked me with how infectious the opening track 'bed' is. every time i listened to it i had the vocal melody from the chorus stuck in my head. the "oohhh" and "ahhh" harmonies on 'don't want to', 'void' and 'when i'm alive' are so simple, but are one of those little things that really elevated this album for me. i also want to say how much i loved that they threw in a 50 second instrumental punk track on here as well just because fuck it; why not?

the only track i wasn't really feeling on here was 'what i want'. i think this band does the short and sweet thing really well, but on an album full of 2/3 minute tracks having one that edges close to the 5 minute mark really throws it off.

overall this album gets the #certifiedbanger™ rating from me

It's time to review record recommended by my world-eating friend @marioeatworld

    Jeff Rosenstock – POST-

I usually don’t listen to lyrics very closely. English is not my native language so I can kinda turn off the lyric-understanding part of my brain to focus more on music and melodies etc. and only catch some phrases good or bad. But after first listening of POST I decided that I should listen to lyrics closely because phrases I could hear really impressed me. So the second listening was with genius.com open. And man, I really liked every word this guy has to say. The POST is kinda political record but it is smarter and less straightforward than your usual political record (looking at you, great discography of Rise Against). It sounds more like some everyman's thoughts analysing Trump-era America without sounding preachy. And lyrics like

How can you solve all the problems around you
When you can’t even solve the ones in your head?

    and

    I’m worried of abandoning
The joys that framed my life
    But all this useless energy
Won’t hold me through the night

    are next to ones like

9 times out of 10 I’ll be stoned on the subway
Reading backlit directives of what I should do

Lyrics sound real and effective. It is political record without political statement is a good way and everyone can relate to it.

The music is great too. It sounds like some Pinkerton-influenced dirty powerpop and makes you wanna dance or bang your head in rhythm. It has a lot of catchy hooks and Jeff’s voice fits this music perfectly. The most important song in here is obviously “USA”. This seven and a half minute song is sonic rollercoaster with it’s loud and aggressive delivery stopped by quiet and cosmic break.

This is the record we kinda need in 2018. Fun sounding and talking about modern world using simple but effective language. Recommended to everyone.

Right, time for my short reviews of @bachna84s recs.

    Thursday - Common Existence

I owned a couple of Thursday CDs way back when, and I always really enjoyed them, but their other albums, and in particularthus ine, I never got round to listening to before.

This one is much as I had expected - a really good post hardcore album.

I can definitely see myself listening to more of this, and all their other albums I missed in the future. Particularly as I plan to see them at this years Slam Dunk festival!

    I give this an 8/10

Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral

I was familiar with a couple of NIN songs prior to listening to this album, but hadn’t spent a great deal of time with them. I guess that’s surprising, given I grew up listening acts such as Marilyn Manson.

I thought this album had a number of enjoyable songs, Mr. Self Destruct and March of the Pigs, however, for the most part, this kind of music is not really my thing I’m afraid @bachna84, so I kind of struggled to get into it.

There was one redeeming factor however, which is closer “hurt”. I was familiar with the Jonny Cash version, but had not heard the original, but this version is equally as good, and to be honest in my opinion slightly better!

    I’ll give this one a 5, maybe a 5.5/10

    Sorry dude!

So this will be the first of 3 reviews I have for @BTDandFeelingThis and first up is:

Jimmy Eat World: Integrity Blues (2016) RCA Records

So this is my second time diving deep into a Jimmy Eat World record as part of CMCS and go figure, it is the second from @BTDandFeelingThis. With that being said, this is an incredible record and a return to form of the bands most applauded record, Bleed American.

Right from the opening notes of You With Me, you know you are in for something special and with the additions of a choir of voices, guitar, and light keyboard it gets even better. This continues throughout the entire record, with a couple of speed bumps along the way, in my opinion. These being Pass the Baby and title track Integrity Blues. I see them as almost filler tracks and ones that I am sure are seldom played live and tend to take away from the overall tone of the record. Although, the last minute or so of Pass the Baby throws something totally out of left field with the band rocking out in something that Tool would be impressed by.

Lyrically, Jim Adkins doesn't deviate too far away from his usual topics of failed relationships (You With Me, It Matters, You Are Free and The End is Beautiful) but does it in a way that makes you want to tease apart the lyrics as though you are right there with him. My favorite song on the record, Sure and Certain, has Jim questioning himself and that maybe his way isn't always the best way and that keeping an open mind and being less stubborn will lead him down a happier path. The other radio single and rock heavy track, Get Right, has him telling us that no matter where you go to escape something or clear your mind it doesn't feel quite right. It is very clear that Jim Adkins is a bit of an introvert, likes to keep to himself and does a lot of soul searching. This is reinforced in the closing track, Pol Roger, which took a bit of research to figure out the meaning of. The song is the story of Jim checking into the Hotel du Vin in Glasgow, where every room is named after a champagne or wine and his is Pol Roger. This song is him expressing the feeling of loneliness you get being far from home but having the strength to be comfortable no matter where you are.
In his own words: "Pol Roger is a great song to close out the record, because if you come to a place of acceptance with yourself and be alone, but not feel lonely, then nothing can really touch you".

This record is a near perfect one for me except for the couple of tracks I mentioned and one I will listen to frequently!

    Favorite Songs:
    Sure and Certain
Pretty Girls (I love the Silversun Pickups vibe on this song)
    You Are Free
    Through

RIYL: It's Jimmy Eat World people!

    9/10

The second review I was given by @BTDandFeelingThis is:

Mike Shinoda-Post Traumatic EP (2018) Warner Bros.

First off, this is less of an album and more of a letter from Mike to the world and probably to himself. Being an artist, this is his way of dealing with the horrific tragedy of losing not only his bandmate but a friend and someone he probably considered family.

Place to Start is him opening up and admitting the uncertainty in his life right now. Opening line: "I don't have a leg to stand on..." speaks volumes and shows that he is lost without Chester. He goes on to say: "Do I even have a decision?". I can't imagine being one of the biggest rock bands in the world and then tragedy strikes. Do you give it all up? This continues further with: "Feeling like I'm living in a story already written, I'm a part of a vision, made by somebody else". How weird is it to sing songs that you didn't write and you weren't there in the moment? Chester's lyrics we now know came from place of pain and he tried to so hard to mask them and medicate with them among other things. The end of the track has voicemails from various people giving their condolences to Mike and makes it so much more real. I can remember the first time I heard the full version of the song Fucked Up by The Amity Affliction and hearing the pain from the voicemail at the beginning of the song and where Joel Birch came from when he wrote it.

    Over Again...ugh
"Sometimes, you don't say goodbye once, you say goodbye, over and over...". Imagine getting up on stage every night having to think about this amazing person time and time again? He further elaborates over texting with Chester hours before his passing and how they were going to play a special concert for their friends. In this song he talks about the benefit concert they did and people asking him how it went. He truthfully states that he doesn't know and almost completely losing it a few times.
These lyrics show the weight and pressure he is feeling of having to carry this burden:
"Everybody that I talk to is like, wow, it must be really hard to figure out what to do now?"
"Well thank you genius, you think it will be a challenge?"
"My life's work, hanging in the fucking balance"

Watching As I Fall see's Mike showing us that he can truly sing. He tells us that he knows there are people out there waiting for him to fail and fronting one of the biggest rock bands in the world makes it easy to do. He references a cliff multiple times letting us know the fall is a pretty big one. He also expresses the uncertainty of what kind of front man he should be: "...telling them the old words but in a new rap, then I change my mind up and make them lose track."

This EP is only 3 tracks long but wow is there a lot of emotions packed into it. Even if you don't enjoy rap/hip hop or even Linkin Park this will make you think about losing a loved one and how much of an impact they had on your life.

I am not going to give it a score since it is only 3 songs but I will say: Highly Recommended!
