    The Felix Culpa
    Sever Your Roots
    2010

    Thank God for @Kennedy

    Prior to this session I had heard of The Felix Culpa, but for whatever reason I had never gotten around to checking them out. When @Kennedy assigned this album to me, he said that he though The Felix Culpa was a very underrated band and that he didn't know how they didn't blow up in the scene. I have to say that I completely agree with him after listening to this album!

    Sever Your Roots is their second (and most recent) full length. The length of the album is a bit daunting at 14 tracks and 67 minutes long (there were a few bonus tracks that I didn't listen to yet) but I would strongly advise not letting the album length keep you from checking out this album. The first track, New Home Life, is a 7 and a half minute long song that slowly builds and gets this album off to an awesome start. There were some horns that (unexpectedly) kicked in around the 6 minute mark and this is an example of this album's unpredictability, which I loved. The second track, Our Holy Ghost, is a louder and more aggressive track, but at the same time it has some very catchy vocal melodies that I found getting stuck in my head. These two opening tracks do a wonderful job of getting the listener's attention.

    There are a couple short interlude-type tracks (Roots, Rum & Cigarettes) that I thought did a nice job of breaking up the album. It's a little difficult to assign a genre to this album, but I would tend to agree with Wikipedia that it was more or less indie rock with post-hardcore vibes. Musically, I would recommend this album to fans of mewithoutYou, Gatsbys American Dream, Brand New (please don't jump on me for mentioning them), and Thrice. Vocally, I was reminded at times of Daryl Palumbo (more Head Automatica, less glassjaw).

    This is absolutely an album that I will be returning to and I will make sure to check out their first album (and their bonus tracks for this album as well). They are still an active band (at least according to Wikipedia), but I'm not sure if they have plans to make any new music in the future.

    My favorite tracks to date are Our Holy Ghosts, The Constant, The First One On The Scene Of An Accident Always Gets Blood On Their Hands, Mutiny, What You Call Thought Control I Call Thought Control, and perhaps my favorite on the album, An Instrument. That's pretty much half of the album right there, but I couldn't narrow down this list any more. That's how much I enjoyed this album!

    Thanks @Kennedy ! You're the best.

    @jorbjorb rec'd me Lydia - Run Wild.

    This album is fine. For me it was a pleasantly inoffensive listen that did not challenge my ears, but did not displease them either. The production is solid, the songs are catchy, and the lyrics are decidedly 21st century millennial pop.

    But it was good! I found myself playing it in the background while I was writing and doing other things and it was perfect for that. I may go back and check out some different Lydia albums, because from what I understand this one is fairly different.

    Yeah, sorry I didn't have more to say about it! I completely neglected to mention that it is produced by Aaron Marsh, which is cool.

    @sean_rugy recommended Ceres- Drag It Down On You

    I had heard this bands name thrown around a few times. I'm honestly very surprised I hadn't pursued them sooner. They're on No Sleep Records, which have so many bands I love on their label.

    I think the best way I could describe this band is as "a poor man Hotelier" I mean no disrespect in saying that. The Hotelier are a top 5, maybe higher band for me, so if anything that's a huge compliment. Like many bands in this scene there were some quieter moments("Okay", but the band really showed their true colors in their bigger moments where the singer poured his heart out("Baby's Breath") I was a big fan of them being Australian, because I thought his accent really complimented the music nicely. My only complaint on the record was the production. I thought the record seemed too "distant" if that makes sense, although there is a good chance the band intended it this way.

    Thanks for the great rec @sean_rugy !

    Favorite tracks: "Roll Ur Eyes" "Spinning Wheel" "Choke" "Loaf" "Baby's Breath"
