I really don't want the equivalent of a 9-7 NYG team beating an undefeated NE for the championship in college. No thanks.

One of the greatest sports moments of all time?

    Okay then

  3. Why not? That game fucking ruled - it’s what makes sports awesome

If we want the champion to just be the team with the best record then there is zero reason to ever have playoffs

I just wonder how long it'll be before we get an expanded playoff.. 5 years? 10? Never?

The Giants had to win 4 playoff games in total to become champs then not two. So it's not like they didn't earn it.

Alabama winning the national championship would absolutely validate that they belong. Hell, even this game does that, and I argued against their inclusion before.

The game was fun, but so can games where all teams are deserving to be there. A team winning one game over .500 doesn't really seem deserving. Using the fact they won the tournament as evidence that they deserved/earned it is hindsight bias.

In a league where all teams play each other, or a small enough league, the best record team winning the crown is fine with me. But that's not possible in CFB.

It just comes down to what the goal is. If the goal is to maximize entertainment, an end of the year tournament is awesome and fun. But it doesn't produce the best teams winning the championship effectively.

I get enough maximized entertainment value in professional sports and other areas. I want to see the best teams win the championship in college football. Just my preference.

Hindsight bias. If Syracuse, or insert any team, came in here and beat Clemson, again, it wouldn't validate them being there.

I’m not understanding the point being made here. Lots of people thought Alabama deserved to be included, I wasn’t one of them. The way this game went tells me I was wrong.

hindsight bias or being able to evaluate new information and make a better-educated revision to your opinion?

    I think it’s the latter.

I also think a lot of these UCF arguments are coming specifically because they just beat Auburn, which is a perfect example of what we’re calling hindsight bias.

Sorry, I meant outcome bias. Not hindsight bias. Subtle but important difference.

    Agreed.

Funny enough. Earlier dorf dismissed the UCF game as outcome bais, but included Alabama's win here as validation of their belonging.

I would say that you can't use either outcomes as critiques of the judgements made prior for determining playoff teams.

Yeah, definitely fair. But like others have said, I’d like to see an expanded playoff so that teams like Ohio State, Wisconsin, UCF, etc. at least have the chance to show they belong within the playoff format itself and so we’re not left comparing scores from lots of regular season games.

Crazy to think that UCF beat the only team to beat BOTH of the national championship teams (and be the only team to beat those teams). Awesome for them.

Holy shit at that Rose Bowl game. My gawd.

Holy shit at Bama holding Clemson to six points. Never imagined that happening.

I don't think I dismissed UCF at any point? What it comes down to is there's got to be a cut off somewhere, and for plenty of people, UCF was on the outside looking in. That's going to be the case whether the playoffs are 4, 6, 8, whatever. I wish there was a way to squeeze UCF in as well given the current system, I just wouldn't put them in over the four that made it and nothing that happened today changes my mind about that.

Three teams who played in the CFP tonight looked like they deserved to be there, and the one that didn't was ranked #1 in the country.

For those wanting an 8 team playoff wouldn't UCF still be excluded since they were ranked 12th? Adding more teams doesn't necessarily fix the issue of what teams are included unless you say "conference champions will be ranked 1-7" (or however many FBS conferences there are) and then ranked for the playoff.

Full disclosure. I was referring to this.

At the very least the playoff is an improvement over the BCS since BCS wouldn't have given us the awesome Rose Bowl game we had today. we would have been stuck with Clemson v Oklahoma for NC with people saying Georgia deserved a shot (which they do and now get)

At least in that scenario, SEC fans get to be the salty ones. Which is certainly an improvement.

UCF being ranked 12 is bullshit. But its ultimately bullshit that doesn't matter because at the end of the day they'd still have gotten the Auburn game even if they were ranked 7 and Auburn was ranked 12 (which is probably fairer). No one really cares about the rankings of the teams ranked 6-12 because they really don't matter.

If we had an 8 team playoff and UCF would probably have been ranked #8 and it would've been at lot harder for the committ to justify the #12 ranking.

I’m curious where people think UCF should’ve been ranked in the final CFP ranking.

Tonight was exactly what I love about Saban-era Bama. These types of defensive performances are what gets me amped up more than anything.

What a good day of football.
