I instantly loved Show Yourself from the second I heard it, it's been stuck in my head since. Damn I didn't know that, now I just appreciate the lyrics even more.

Next up my reviews for our friendly neighborhood not-so-super saiyan @Raditz ALFM tho.

A Rocket to The Moon- On Your Side

Having never heard this band before I had no idea what I was about to listen to, I had a good feeling as it took @Raditz and I a good while to iron out our recs due to similar music tastes.

This album is poppy, catchy and infectious right off the bat and honestly it never really let’s up. It’s full of summertime fun jams that keeps you interested and singing along the whole time. At times I found the lyrics slightly cheesy and unrelatable but they still worked well with the music.

This is a record that I would definitely spin again a bunch more during the summer, it just feels like it would fit the season like a “glove”. I imagine it’s good music to train to eh Raditz?

Standout Tracks: She’s Killing Me, Life of the Party, On A Lonely Night, Where Did You Go?

Hidden in Plain View- Life in Dreaming

I had been repetitively told to check this album out by @WolvesAreCircling182 but repetitively forgot to check it out. Luckily our trusty Saiyan warrior @Raditz recommended it and legally obligated me to do so, no excuses this time. I am very glad he did!

This album is so great! Bleed For You is such a great opening track, I like the seamless switch in tempos in it and the vocals are just awesome. It is my second favourite track on the album next to “Top 5 Addictions” which I just love everything about. Ashes Ashes probably features the best guitar work on the album and is super enjoyable.

Standout Tracks: Top 5 Addictions, Bleed For You, Ashes Ashes, Garden Statement

@ComedownMachine had me listen to two albums this week

Dua Lipa - Dua Lipa. I remember a while back I was whining about pop music as I tend to do, and @sophos34 said I should check out Dua. I listened to a few songs that day and liked them, but admittedly kinda dropped the ball. When New Rules blew up I remembered her name and being rec'd her, but I still never got around to really listening. So I was happy to receive the rec this week! I enjoyed the cynical lyrics lol. IDGAF was prob my fave. Kick the scrud to the curb, sis! Her tone kinda reminded me of Nelly furtado sometimes, which was enjoyable. Fun fact: the amount of time it takes me to get ready in the morning is this album. I consistently enjoyed it and no songs really stuck out to me as unpleasant.

Shura - Nothing's Real. Had never heard of Shura before which is odd cause I am a fan of a lot of the related artists on Spotify. I didn't know what to expect and was surprised by the sorta 80s pop throwback vocals but I enjoyed it. No track really stood out to me cause it all flowed together, but not in a negative way? I feel like I took it in as a whole album instead of a song by song basis. I really liked it tho.

Also it's weird looking up artists and have them all be younger than u now.

    Exotic Animal Petting Zoo
    Tree of Tongues
    2012

I was paired with our resident canine @Dog with a Blog this week and was assigned the album "Tree of Tongues" by Exotic Animal Petting Zoo. I had never heard of this band before, but I was told that I may enjoy them since I'm a big fan of Every Time I Die.

Overall, I was pretty impressed by this album. I would say that this album is roughly 60% quiet and 40% loud. The music of the loud portion is reminiscent of The Dillinger Escape Plan and the screamed vocals do remind me of Every Time I Die. The quieter songs (or portions of songs) have clean vocals and the music itself is more relaxed and dreamy (I stole this description from an Amazon review, but I think it's a good description!).

I tend to favor the louder tracks, so the standout tracks to me are Thorough.Modern, The Great Explainer, and Whores of Babel.

I would recommend this album to anyone who is a fan of The Dillinger Escape Plan or Every Time I Die. Please don't go into this album expecting a carbon copy of either of those bands though - Exotic Animal Petting Zoo definitely brings something new and different to the table.

Thanks for this recommendation! I can definitely see myself coming back to this album and also checking out their first album.

    First of three reviews:
@St. Nate recommended I listen to: Hometown Anthem-Don't Hold On to What You Hear

Let's get one thing clear right from the get go and that it was a great time to be a band in mid 2000's, especially if you lived in New Jersey. You had bands like Thursday, Armor For Sleep, Hidden in Plain View and the band whose album I am reviewing, Hometown Anthem.
Like The Mountain Goats, who I reviewed last, they wear their influences on their sleeve, echoing bands such as Matchbook Romance, Hidden In Plain View and even Motion City Soundtrack. They would have fit perfectly on the now defunct Drive Thru records roster at the time and even used the talents of Hidden in Plain View member Rob Freeman to produce the album. Unfortunately, just like The Mountain Goats, they don't separate themselves apart from these bands, essentially copy and pasting the best parts to create their sound. The essentially fall to the bottom of the barrel so to speak, amongst the NUMEROUS other Warped Tour bands at the time.
The vocalist reminds me of a mix between Silverstein's Shane Told and Spark the Rescue's Alex Roy. I really enjoy reading lyrics after my first listen and unfortunately I couldn't find them. From my few listens, I could decipher that it was the typical pop punk topics, most notably failed relationships and some of them are near cringe worthy. "I spilled my guts and put them in your mailbox for you to read", yeah...
They are a fun band to listen to and I found myself nodding along after a while. I most certainly will throw them on a mix with other pop punk bands but I don't see myself actively wanting to listen to the whole album again.
    4/10
Thank you for this recommendation @St. Nate

@EmmanuelSCastle the second half of this Places to Hide record is fucking tight. both "Michael" songs are kickass. they really have a nice sound pushing the sloppier vocal delivery up against really tight drumming and these super melodic guitar licks. Super cool it's only 26 minutes too, i can more easily dig in

that being said, i don't personally feel they find the blend until about track 5. there's a lot of dissonance in those first few tracks that, while likely intentional, doesn't mesh super well. will return to it, but yah.

I think it's def a record that rewards repeat listens, so keep trying with that first half. They don't always nail it with that off kilter sort of songwriting they do there til subsequent work, but there's flashes of outright brilliance there imo. Michael Jordan might be the best song still due to sheer immediacy though, yeah. Glad you're finding something to like!

    Second review this week
I was given Jimmy Eat World-Futures by @WolvesAreCircling182

I'll be very honest and say I have heard all the singles and really enjoyed them but have never actively listened to a full Jimmy Eat World album. I know this is pretty sad considering our very own Jason Tate states they are the band that he would take their entire discography to a deserted island and never listen to any other band again. My current self is going back in time and saying "WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?"
Immediately after getting done with my first listen and walking away to ponder my thoughts on the album I found myself singing the songs out loud. That is really impressive because I listen to A LOT of music and very few bands/albums have been able to do that. Suffice to say: I get it!
The opening track (and title track) opens into this almost New Found Glory style guitar tone, which truly surprised me considering most of what I had heard of them was extremely pop oriented and radio friendly. The track then settles into familiar territory.
The album as a whole seems a very personal one for Jim Adkins as it delves into topics such as dealing with a person suffering from drug addiction (Drugs or Me) and being an alcoholic (Night Drive). It is in these vulnerable moments you feel like you are struggling right there along with him and you instantly connect to the lyrics.
My only complaint about the album is when they try and go all out rocker on songs like hit single Pain and Nothing Wrong. I feel like this may have been producer driven as they utilized Gil Norton whose resume includes none other than the Foo Fighters. It just feels very out of place to me personally.

This album is one that I will listen to frequently and I cannot wait to listen to the rest of their discography.
