Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Rian Johnson, December 15, 2017) Movie • Page 247

  1. The Rotten Tomatoes score for "The Last Jedi" may be rigged
Thanks to friends of mine who taught me a thing or two about Bot Accounts, I used them to create this audience score through Facebook accounts created that subsequently logged into Rotten Tomatoes who rigged this score and still keep it dropping.

    And:
Quartz went through the latest 20 pages of reviews of The Last Jedi, and found that dozens of 0.5 and 1 star reviews came from accounts created in December that have not reviewed any other titles. That alone does not confirm they are bots. Star Wars audiences may be flocking to Rotten Tomatoes to post reviews for the first time.

But there were also suspicious similarities in some of the reviews, like the criticism of “social justice warrior,” or “SJW” ideas, which knock the movie’s inclusion of race and powerful women, reported Polygon. The publication also investigated claims that the attack was staged by 4Chan, which users of the online forum reportedly denied.

    And:
Bleeding Cool News found negative reviews for The Last Jedi that were incorrectly posted to another movie, The Shape of Water, which could suggest a misconfigured bot.

Someone tell me again I was wrong about the online dorks brigading against the movie and it was just a conspiracy.

I don't think anyone would say you're wrong. It's a subtle question, though. Any film this huge is going to have some trolls. This one probably experienced a more organized effort that perhaps noticeably impacted its average. Instead of 56%, would it be 63% without the true trolls? Or 85%? I tend to think closer to the former, but who knows.

  6. Quite a few people said I was wrong earlier in the thread, hence my joke.

I don't think there's a "probably." It was attacked by bots.

    A (Cancelled) Dork Prestigious

"The RESISTANCE is devastated. Following the decimation of their forces, GENERAL LEIA ORGANA has ordered what few soldiers remain to engage in a shadow campaign to resist the FIRST ORDER and rally new systems to their cause.

KYLO REN, having wrested control of the First Order, leads an ever-growing fleet on a campaign of subjugation, forcing all in his path to submit or be destroyed.

Though all appears lost, the brave rebels fight on, driven by the knowledge that their efforts are the only hope of restoring peace and justice to the Galaxy..."

-Six months have passed since The Last Jedi. We open on a sprawling cityscape planet. Think a dingier version of Coruscant, closer to how LA looks in the original Blade runner. The opening action sequence concerns a small group of masked operatives conducting a targeted attack against a First Order weapons cache. The stormtroopers are caught totally by surprise and the group is successful in stealing the goods. They reveal themselves to be Resistance soldiers led by Poe, Finn, and Rose.

-Following the fight, it's revealed that Leia and what remains of the Resistance leadership are hidden away in a secure location, delivering marching orders through a complex system of dead drops to only their most trusted operatives. Poe, Finn, and Rose are among those operatives, having only been brought together on this mission because it required all of their skills.

-The war, if it can even be called that anymore, is going exceedingly poorly. Small raids on First Order outposts aren't getting the job done, and the recruitment effort has been more difficult than they had hoped. Nevertheless, a large number of recruits have grown the Resistance ranks somewhat, mainly due to the now-famous story of Luke Skywalker standing alone against several AT-ATs and outsmarting Kylo Ren himself.

-The First Order has begun its own propaganda campaign, painting the Resistance fighters as terrorists and vowing to bring them to justice. The Rebel insignia is banned from all First Order-controlled systems and the punishment for displaying it there is death.

-Rey and Chewbacca, meanwhile, have been scouring the galaxy for a source of Kyber crystals that Rey can use to build her own lightsaber and stash away for any future warriors she trains. The books Rey took from Ach-To seem to point toward a planet not on any map she's seen, but every potential lead has been fruitless thus far. They eventually come upon the ruins of an old Jedi temple, destroyed during Vader's campaign against the Jedi from between III and IV, where a hand-painted map appears to outline a planet matching the description pieced together from the books. They set off for that system immediately.

-Unbeknownst to Rey, Kylo Ren had been searching for a way to re-link their minds and find out where she is. Through months of trying to achieve this by force of will, Kylo had come up empty-handed. In his frustration, he suddenly decides to calmly meditate, and reach out with his feelings to try and locate Rey in the galaxy. He catches a glimpse of her energy somewhere in the vastness of space and decides to take his personal ship and go after her. Hux tries to prevent him from going but there's no reasoning with Kylo once his mind has been made up. Sensing an opportunity, Hux relents and allows Kylo to pursue Rey while he remains behind.

-The Resistance catches word that the First Order is seeking out and kidnapping anyone who demonstrates Force sensitivity of any kind. Poe, Finn, and Rose decide that they have to figure out where they're being taken and attempt to rescue them. A new character of some kind can be skeptical that the children are still alive at all and try to keep them from wasting Resistance resources chasing people who are already dead. Leia sends word that she agrees with the heroes and wants the three of them to figure out what they can. They decide to infiltrate a First Order base on the planet where the most recent kidnapping occurred.

-Kylo retraces several of Rey's stops on her journey. As he does, he learns of the good deeds she's done for people she met along the way. Saving people from being killed by the First Order, telling the tales of the Resistance and Luke Skywalker, and even just assisting people with mundane chores. He thinks back on their confrontation in Snoke's throne room, on her offer to forsake the First Order and join her in the Resistance.

-Rey meanwhile has arrived at her destination. There she encounters Ghost Yoda, who introduces himself to her and explains that she has discovered a place that is incredibly strong with Force energy. A place that she cannot allow the First Order to find. She tells him that she's there for the crystals and will be on her way, that nobody has followed her. Yoda basically implies that she's wrong but she doesn't get the hint. She ventures into the caverns below the Jedi temple there to select her crystal. A cave-in occurs, though, and she becomes trapped there.

-Finn, Poe, and Rose manage to get in to the outpost somehow, where they discover that the children are alive, and are being brought to another new planet where they're to be trained as soldiers of the First Order. They're trying to build a contingent of loyal Force-users. They decide that they need to stop this from happening, but they can't do it without Rey. Finn tells them that he hasn't heard from Rey in months.

-Hux meanwhile has convinced the First Order's other leadership that he should be in charge instead of Kylo. He talks about how impulsive and dangerous he is to the cause and how they should shun him when he returns. They agree, especially considering how much of a liability his temper has been during and since the Battle of Crait.

-Kylo touches down on the planet where Rey is. He discovers that she's trapped and cuts the rocks free with his lightsaber and the Force. She's unconscious when he reaches her, having passed out from lack of oxygen. He contemplates killing her, but instead sees the Kyber crystals glittering in the cave. He realizes that he can't let her have a source of crystals to use, but also can't bring himself to kill Rey (proving Hux's concerns from the previous scene to be well-founded), so he carries her out of the Temple and uses his ship to both destroy the Temple and disable the Falcon. Then he leaves.

-Rey eventually wakes up and sees what happened. Yoda reappears and explains that it was Kylo. Rey realizes she's stranded and despairs, but Yoda gives her a cool Yoda speech that snaps her out of it. She proceeds to complete the construction of her lightsaber with the purple crystal she put in her pocket before Kylo found her, then she uses the Force to reach out and contact Finn.

-They plan an assault on the training facility. They tell Rey that scouts reported Kylo's ship landed there not long after they found Rey; Rey assures them that he won't be a problem, that she'll do what needs to be done when the time comes.

-Hux and the First Order leadership are waiting at the training facility for Kylo. They surround him with troopers and heavy weaponry, then tell him he’s out as the leader. That he can either work for them or they’ll destroy him. He freaks out and kills them all in a balletic display of violence.

-Poe leads a squad of pilots to distract the base's security while Rey and the others sneak in. Finn and Rose go off to try and break into the cells where the children are being kept, while Rey, sensing Kylo, goes to end him once and for all.

-Finn and rose manage to find the children and break them out of their cells, but the stormtroopers discover them and chase them through the facility. They lose basically all of the Resistance soldiers that they had with them, and all seems lost, until one of the children decides to turn around and stand up to the troopers. It's Broom Boy. The other kids join him and they, together, push back the stormtroopers using the Force. They all escape the planet.

-Rey and Kylo meet somewhere in the facility. They exchange some dialogue about how they could have been allies, maybe even more. Then they fight. And it's the best duel in the franchise. Eventually, Kylo is able to strike a killing blow, but he hesitates because he still cares for Rey. Rey uses his indecision to gain the upper hand. Kylo tells her that if she kills him, she's only walking down the path of the Dark Side. Rey points her saber tip at him and reminds him that they don't believe in the Light or Dark sides anymore, remember? The scene cuts away.

-While all this has been going on, the dogfighting outside has been intercut. Poe and his squad realize they can destroy the base, along with the records of the children, from the outside. Finn and Rose say Rey is still there with Kylo, but Poe says it's now or never. So he blows up the base. They think Rey is dead.

-Rey reaches out to them and tells them she's alive. She pilots Kylo's ship to meet them. When she arrives, Kylo is unconscious in the hold. She decides to devise a way to hold him prisoner for life.

-Hidden in the hold of Kylo's ship, Rey finds a stash of Kyber crystals. She looks at the crystals, and then out at the children they rescued, and smiles as the Star Wars theme swells in the background.

Luke was refusing to turn to the dark side by killing a defenseless Vader out of vengeance. If Vader survived and was like “cool I’m in charge now. Let’s blow up some more planets”. I wouldn’t see it as character regression if Luke deemed it necessary to off him at that point.

okay back on track I finally saw this
full disclosure more into Rian Johnson and Laura Dern than Star Wars
I can't believe Lupita is only in this for like 30 seconds, she was great the whole time but c'mon, there was also not enough Laura Dern but there's never enough Laura Dern
I like the idea of this being about the fact that things aren't so black and white good and evil, and separating Rey from the pack was an interesting idea
Kelly Marie Tran is too adorable
I wish I heard more of Rian's voice in this, it's hard to tell with a big studio movie like this which is why I have mixed feelings about my faves doing them
