We reach for the longest shadow

I almost asked for a podcast that actually liked the movie to listen to on my lunch walk, but decided against it, so this is queued up for tomorrow. Thanks!

I’m thinking 9 needs to be more along the lines of R1 in terms of the resistance launching a clandestine operation, not an all out war or even a Death Star run type of attack. They could cause an uprising of the people through propaganda. Rey still has to confront kylo in an epic lightsaber duel in an unexpected location, maybe in front of everyone in a big city.

That'd be cool. Almost like an intergalactic television stream so the entire galaxy can see there is a match for kylo.

i guess my biggest gripe is lack of Luke. Hamill has become quite the actor and I feel like I didn't see nearly enough of him. I loved TFA and really enjoyed the parts of this I was able to actually consume.

Oooo I like that and I have my first thing I really want in this movie. There needs to be Kylo and Rey lightsaber duel. Probably one of the few things Ill be disappointed if we dont. Choreography needs to be better than TFA (not that it was bad). Emotional. Great dialogue.

As people have said. Luke was never perfect. Before refusing to strike down his father he went apeshit on him and almost killed him.

Rian has said that he told JJ his theory and JJ said that it was what he had in mind also.

He says he "Stoked Ren's conflicted soul." This could have that effect.

They didn't have another moment. Rey was realizing that Luke was passing into the Force and Kylo was realizing that his ass got played.

Right now, I feel like I dont care about the resistance very much thanks to a plot that I just wanted to end so I could "get back to the good stuff" with Reys arc. Its like how alot of people feel about Game of Thrones. And I dont care a whole lot about Leais arc either as an extension to the resistance plot. Maybe repeated viewings will change my mind.

yo.. would you all be upset if episode 9 brought Rey and Kylo together by facing another villain who is a major threat to their galaxy? it would be a weirdd movie

Pretty sure whatever happens Rey won't beat Kylo. Kylo will be his own downfall.

Nah they Rian made it pretty clear that they were looking at each other before she closed the falcons door. Rey realized Luke died earlier before she got on the Falcon

am I wrong for wanting Rey and Kylo to end the series together in some way, maybe not romantically but maybe as force partners, I still want him to be redeemed.. also hes the last of the Skywalker lineage and these movies are about THAT lineage so I don't see them just killing him off. It's too easy, make it complicated between them somehow.

You're not wrong for wanting that, but I'm not 100% sure that's what we're going to get, personally. It would be more interesting than the standard "I have to stop you because you're evil" plot that is also a potential outcome for all this.

Rey killing Kylo and ending the “chosen” bloodline would be the natural conclusion to this trilogy.

The story now belongs to the nobodies. I hope they do it.

maybe just kill Kylo and he comes back as a benevolent force ghost

with Vader we learned All Sith Go To Heaven tm (read: force ghosts)

Yeah I dont think Rey would kill Kylo. She had the power to not do it in TFA and now she kills him? not happening. Character regresses IMO. Choosing not to kill (Luke throwing his saber in ROTJ and Rey in TFA is a big part of Star Wars). No idea what happens, which is good.

I'm sure I could be surprised, but Kylo turning good would be a really big letdown, and honestly more predictable than just letting him be hella bad and fuck shit up until meeting his end or capture at the hands of the good guys. I don't know that Rey will kill him, but their teammate moment in TLJ was perfect and doesn't need to be repeated, nor does the Anakin turn from ROTJ.

I trust that whatever happens with these two characters will be handled well, but imo there are plenty of interesting ways to wrap the story without a single other turn from dark to light or vice versa.

I know there was discussion of The Watch and Andy Greenwald yesterday and they released their TJL episode. It's a great listen too.

I've been consuming nothing but podcasts about this movie ha

Having this play out with Rey refusing to kill Kylo because she believes there is good in him in spite of all of the evidence to the contrary negates all the good work done in TLJ to show us that Rey’s journey is not Luke’s journey.

I don’t want Kylo’s journey to mirror Vader’s, with him getting “redemption” at the end. And I want Rey’s to continue to forge new ground separate from Luke’s.

How that plays out is ultimately unimportant. But if JJ just comes in and gives us Luke / Vader 2, I cant imagine feeling anything other than disappointed.

I've seen the movie 4 times and that's never the impression I got. I suppose your interpretation may be correct but for now, we'll have to agree to disagree. I'll let you know after number 5 later today whether my opinion on it changes.
