This is how Ive felt with TFA. I think RO gave us a tiny bit of that. Its the essence that I personally want most and have been missing big time. Im really hoping I get that with the casino planet stuff.

The weirdness doesn't really come from there, it's just a cool design for a location and something we never really saw in Star Wars before. Reminded me a bit of, like, Casino Royale in terms of design.

I'm sorry, there is no excusing the Leia space scene. If you want to show her being strong with the force, that's fine, but holy shit mary poppins'ing her through space was terrible.

Also, I think Finn's story arc was fine because as someone above noted, we needed to see him take action and rise to a position of leadership, which I think will continue in IX. It just suffered at the hand of a very prequel-y segment on Canto Bight, and I just felt a little worn on the fact that once again we have to sneak into the bad guys ship to deactivcate the shield/tractor beam, like come on think of something else.

The milk thing was something I'd expect if Will Ferrell made a space movie.

I like how this movie puts into perspective how close-minded both the Jedi and Sith ideologies are. Their ideas of what the force was and how it's could be used is shown to be rudimentary at best because their understanding of it is tainted by human constructs like good and evil while the force is only concerned with balance. Really helps drive home how much there is to still learn when taken in conjunction with all the new ways we see the force used in the new movies.

I thought it was fairly obvious after the scene, the shot where it looked like she closed her eyes to accept her fate was actually her calling upon the force and focusing to prepare for the inevitable. We have seen the Force be used in new and powerful ways since we saw Kylo stop that laser in TFA. The Force has truly awakened.

Honestly, I’m more bummed about the Luke FO stand off now. I thought he truly was powerful enough to withstand that attack. Granted, he was using the Force powerfully in a different way, but that moment is a little cheapened for me.

Everything about the casino felt STRAIGHT from the prequels. They get busted over a parking ticket? The whole animal chase scene was SO prequel-y, too.

I was also bummed that Luke wasn't actually there to confront Kylo and it was just projection. It's cool in theory, but having Luke there physically would have worked better for me.
I'm seeing the film again at 6 this evening. Perhaps I'l change my mind the second go round.

I’m someone who enjoyed those growing up, loathed them, and have since accepted them as Star Wars, both the good and the awful parts. I like them in their own very weird way. So, maybe that’s why it didn’t bother me too terribly much. But I was far more interested in other storylines during that time.

Yea, but as Master Yoda says, “wars do not make one great.” Luke found a better way to do what was needed.

I DID love that little gremlin thing putting coins into BB-8. I also was so sad when BB-8's head fell off.

I just don't agree. The chase scene was way less unnecessary than the rathtars in TFA, at least. And it gave that sojourn an action set piece to end on. Is it because they rode animals that you think it was bad? Like, would you have differently if they had rode speeder bikes to get away? And if so, why? What's the distinction? I'm just trying to get at why this one thing is apparently so terrible.

Also the reasons for why they get caught are nowhere near as bad as most of the stuff from the prequels, let's be honest here. I mean, you think that's "50's diner inexplicably on Coruscant" levels of bad? This is a planet full of rich snob asshole arms dealers, of course one of them would be pissed about that. Although, like I said above, them encountering Phasma there and getting caught that way would have been way better, but that only happens in my fan fic revision of this trilogy where Finn and Phasma have an ongoing, character-developing, trilogy-spanning conflict and face off in each film.

The rathtars scene was terrible and unnecessary too.

Oh fuck! I just realized something...

Luke finally heeded Yoda’s advice. He didn’t run off to save his friends. He instead relied solely on the Force and what he could do with it from where he felt he should be. He was able to help and save his friends and became one with the Force.

The casino stuff was a lot better than the rathtars scene. It’s not even close.

Still my favorite. I need to see this again.

No. You've been totally dismissive since you basically said people don't like this because Rian Johnson outsmarted the fanboys.

We reach for the longest shadow

I think the casino scene progressed the idea of there not being a good/bad anymore well. It showed DJ doing what he felt was necessary in life, which is not aligning to a side and taking advantage of both to get by. It also planted the seed in Fin's mind that the the only people who win in war are arms dealers. I definitely think that him seeing that the same people made and sold the ships for the resistance and the first order is going to make a lasting impression on him.

I said absolutely nothing of the sort, where does that characterization even come from? I made a comment about how I believe a lot of people had expectations of where this was going, and Johnson swerved around them to deliver something totally unexpected, which caused those people to dislike the movie for not giving them what they specifically wanted. For the record, I said:

So if that was your takeaway to that, I guess that's fine, but it's not true. I'm on the record on this site numerous times being against rampant fan crowd-sourcing of plot details for both movies and television, that's just a personal opinion of mine. Here, I've done nothing more than express my arguments against criticisms I've seen, and now you're refusing to respond to what I said about yours. And that isn't even to mention you ignoring a ton of what I originally said in favor of focusing solely on the casino scenes. But hey, if you think you can't back up your arguments, that's fine. Just say so. But don't attack me or dishonestly mischaracterize my comments to try and deflect.
