yeah, surprising things were perfume genius, mount eerie, arca, slowdive, big thief so low. tyler, moses, kelela, migos so high. can't complain, almost all of these records are good, FJM wasn't included either.

 

Kind of surprised St. Vincent is on the list after their review of the record. No The National is a little surprising.

Open Mike Eagle is the only one I haven’t heard yet.

 

st vincent/the national isn't that surprising, both of them weren't BNM but pitchfork generally corrects for general cultural significance and reception for their end of year lists

 

Everybody was all over that Migos album when it came out though

I'm a little surprised Grizz didn't make it to P4K too. More surprising than lack of the National imo

 

Uninspired list by pitchfork

 

Moses Sumney is great. Had him on my iTunes since it dropped, finally paying attention

 

It's not a bad list, this is just continuing the pattern of p4k having just about 50 albums that I've already heard and liked on a list. I really used to enjoy seeking out the deeper cuts on it. I've heard 35 of them, and the remaining 15 are either already queued up to be listened to from other lists or artists that I don't really fuck with.

 

Did people expect big surprises from p4k list? Like, these are the things they've praised all year, it would be weird if they weren't on there.

 

If you want surprises check The Quietus list or hold out for Tiny Mix Tapes later this week. They are/will be full of them.

yeah, i mean, you should expect pitchfork to be the representation of the most hip and present critically acclaimed records of the year. you aren't expecting any curveballs, because they really are the publication that the critical culture is following. you won't get weird bad choices like rolling stone or spin, and you won't get random emo and metal albums like stereogum. pitchfork really is representative at this point

 

Kamasi Washington tape is great grading/reading music.

the fever ray album is quite the weird one. never was into the knife and some of the record weirds me out a bit (between vocals, music, and lyrics, shifts quite often) but it digs in deep

 

glad big pubs are recognizing KAS, hoping more experimental synth stuff starts to get the same recognition as her cuz there’s great shit out there

 

I love it so much. Gets better with each listen. I haven't listened to the Knife enough, nor the last Fever Ray record, but this one has stuck with me big time.

weird mewithoutyou vocal style but with totally different instrumentation

Listened to it for the first time doing progress notes the other day, banged out everything in three listens
