Hmm... and how do you set this new precedent, chief? By your morals? By ours? How do we go about that? Will we judge in a case by case basis? How do we set this new precedent? By setting ourselves to an unattainable goal, we are losing focus of the now. But yeah. This is pointless. Not here to being right. Maybe when the actual victims start calling people on that, maybe you will listen. Or won't, am I right?

i think we should set our standards high or abusers will continue to be ignored and there won't be a cultural change and things will keep going.

i can't imagine a victim would want only their abuser struck from the world and not every other one who has done the same thing too. maybe i'm wrong, but i doubt it.

Victims of abuse want ALL the abusers to get their due. But victims of abuse need the attention to their cases in a case by case scenario. I don't see how bringing Beatles, Bowie, Zeppelin or any of their non-contemporaries into a Lacey discussion does the victims any good. For one, because back then this wasn't just shrugged it off, but glamourized. And second, because all these cases deserve to be analyzed separately.

My point is... the more we talk about this, instead of getting people to stop listening to/caring about Elvis, Bowie, Beatles and etc - an unattanaible goal - we will get more people comparing Lacey with them and how nobody cared back then. It's a tough line to balance and I get you want to idealistically set a precedent. I'd be right there with you if I thought it was possible. At least in this period of time, it isn't. It's certainly something we can educate a future generation, and for that, discussing this like we are doing now is important. But I think that worrying about the side effects of discussing this is valid and something to always have in consideration of.

i think of all times now is the time to be as intense and idealistic about this as ever. we're in a huge cultural awakening due to this and i personally think the best way to create lasting cultural change is to be harder than ever. let's show future generations that we won't make the mistakes of the previous and let's move forward.

i will also say that we got to the point where nothing new was really coming about jesse, the conversation has moved towards other cases and how to handle things in the future, so i don't think bringing this stuff is distracting from something that has been stagnant for a bit.

Thinking idealistically is always good. But being able to see reality and how your actions might have undesired side effects it's incredibly important. Taking that into account is the responsible and mature thing to do imho, it's a balance act. Hence why I've been saying from the start that discussing this but putting everything into context matters.

Oh how I would adore if the human community could keep its fucking lingo straight

If we're going to insist that "whataboutism" is a real word, could we at least apply it correctly? Donald Trump deflecting sexual assault claims to talk about Obama's birth certificate is whataboutism. Bringing up David Bowie sexually assaulting minors when you're already talking about Jesse Lacey sexually assaulting minors is not whataboutism, IT'S THE EXACT SAME FUCKING THING. THEY ARE VERY MUCH CONNECTED AND RELEVANT TO ONE ANOTHER IN THE CONTEXT OF THE CONVERSATION.

i am not going to be lighter on cases of sexual abuse because it might have "undesired side effects". i don't care about a "balance act" in these situations.

Not saying for you to be lighter. Saying to have nuance. Nuance is good. Thinking and analyzing too. It's what I do for a living. Gotta go again.

@straylightrunner what bothers me is you've made this entire thread less about what happened and more about your insistence on pushing your very specific version of the narrative
