I've fallen pretty far behind with keeping up with releases for the past few months but the Chaos Moon album that came out Friday is amazing for fans of black metal

These lists are always a good road map of things to listen to the rest of the year. Need to check out the Paradise Lost album as this adds to the good things I've already heard about it. I'm surprised the Converge album is only at 10 considering how much praise they gave it earlier this year.

It all clicks when you see them live. The styles meshed well in that environment. They were a nice surprise on the Cattle Decap tour earlier this year.

Loudwire's top 25 of the year: 25 Best Metal Albums of 2017

Pretty bad. Seems like they were just trying to get every big-name band in there while ignoring the more underground stuff. Can't argue with number 1 though ;-p

That list is very good and I agree with a lot of it. There is a good mix of underground and bigger named bands in there.

I'm gonna go between @theagentcoma and @Nate_Johnson and say that the Loudwire list is a decent list. Some clunkers in there that you'd expect from a less underground focused publication like Decibel (Cradle of Filth, Mastodon), but Power Trip is #1 so I can't complain too much. Also cool to see God Mother and Converge in there. Didn't Zeal and Ardor come out last year though?

That was painful clicking though that to find out number 1. I don’t remember seeing Black Dahlia in there, that seems like a big omission (same with the other list on this page).

One good thing about this time of the year is it giveaway me a whole load of albums to check out that I’ve missed through the year (or never got round to). I checked out Elders album earlier today and really enjoyed that one.

random metal (and other loud music) updates:

-the new taake album is a taake album, which means it's a fucking solid black metal album. nothing too flashy, just right around the edges, black metal.
-though more hardcore than metal, the new sect album is bonkers. the subtle blast beat touches from one andy hurley are much appreciated. it's nice to see the dude can still shred.
-bloodbath announced some NA tour dates today on the coasts and canada. while i'm probably seeing them at mdf, it'd be nice to get a second set from them in chicago. but we already get all the tours so i can't complain too much.

I think it's laughable putting Mastodon at #2. Like, the Loudwire list reads more like a list of "25 Metal Albums That Just Happened To Come Out in 2017." Props for putting Bell Witch, Elder, and Power Trip on there, but how are you going to make a list that includes Gwar and Trivium and not Tomb Mold, The Ruins of Beverast, WITTR, etc.

As for Decibel. They totally ignore underground thrash & speed metal, which is in the middle of yet another musical renaissance yet no Antichrist, Condor, Stalker, Vampire, etc. Only Power Trip & Kreator -- the former, underrated by them; the latter barely listenable now. And their lists don't match their reviews: Converge got a 7 from them but is in the top 10; Godflesh got an 8 but isn't on the list.

Old man yells at cloud, I guess

I'd be willing to guess that Decibel's list is an aggregate of staff members and those reviews reflect individual reviewers.

Ayreon and Pain of Salvation came out with some good stuff this year. The Contortionist is pretty much straight prog these days and their new album I thought was great. Vuur is some solid female-fronted prog that just released their debut last month. As for the harder stuff, Cormorant's Diaspora is a great blackened prog album similar to Ne Obliviscaris, who also released an album this year. Also check Enslaved's new album that just came out.
