The closest analogue that I can think of in this scene is Lostprophets, and I couldn't care less about Lostprophets back then let alone now, but I did have some albums of them on my iPod. All of them deleted and no trace of their stuff anywhere on my stuff.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say here but your wording definitely tells me that you are going through a very weird path to try justify something here. Just own it. You like stuff from a guy that groomed and abused underage girls. Not only that, but sang about that as well, from his first to his last album. If you can own that and still find your own meaning to their songs, good for you. They are still shit to me though. Done talking with reverence about these assholes.

I do, however, hate the word boycott when used in the context of media. It doesn't seem like it's the right word. Media's default state is not consuming it, so boycott doesn't fit for me. That's just semantics though.

Entire record labels have been boycotted by folks for a band being tangentially related to unsavory people. Trigger warnings/disclaimers used to be put on news posts over much, MUCH less than what Lacey has done. It feels like now that the initial sting of the news is gone, people are just saying whatever they need to in order to listen to TDAG again.

Meanwhile, the fact remains that Lacey did what he did to children.

 

Few points. Firstly, I personally am fine listening and continuing to enjoy. I don't interpret the lyrics the same way as you and someone else may interpret them differently than both of us.

Secondly,, who ever cared about the Lost Prophets? I am talking John Lennon, are people throwing out their Beatles merch? Anthony Keidis, doesn't look like the Chili Peppers are struggling to sell out arenas. Maybe Elvis? Never hear his songs anymore right? I am not using these examples as justification for my listening, I have my own reasons. Rather, I am trying to understand is it that Brand New had a different meaning to others or is it hypocrisy of giving up on Brand New and not others

I cared about lostprophets. They were my favourite band as a kid. Fuck ian watkins, scumbag piece of fucking shit.

Also like dude go to any fucking band thread where this shit happened and you'll see the same god damn posts by the same posters about dropping those bands. It's common.

Sure, you could just ignore the numerous conversations all around this site where we have been discussing why we have been so comfortable letting these people skate by because it was a different time. You could also ignore the fact that almost everyone here is trying to figure out how to be better moving forward and not let the Lennon/Elvis/Bowie types off scot free anymore.

I apologize was not my intention to set everyone off. I am not constantly on this site looking across message boards so I was unaware this has been brought up all over. I really was legitimately curious how others were handling the situation and how others felt about the actions of others who have had similar accusations in the past.

I am leaving the discussion at this point, but again I apologize for offending others with my opinions.

 

People seem to be really torn up here about one formerly revered emo band, and justifiably so, but they seem less torn up about the fact that this kind of conduct is what the music industry is built on. This is where I get confused.

Can anyone say with confidence that none of their favorite artists have ever abused their position of power for their own gain? This is exactly what people in positions of power do best, male or female. If you're only listening to artists who've never exhibited various levels of shitty behaviour towards people in a lower position of social power, it's going to be a short playlist.

I've seen dozens of comments from people in multiple threads addressing exactly what you are. People care and are 'torn up.'

To reiterate the obvious, though: Jesse Lacey didn't have 'shitty behavior.' Jesse Lacey preyed on children, entering into relationships with them and soliciting child porbography from them. Not all shitty actions are equal, and Jesse being lumped in with garden variety music industry people does a massive disservice to the children - CHILDREN - he harmed.

 

The kind of mental gymnastics at play here are mind boggling. I don't vouch for anyone, but I can definitely say that conflating preying upon underage girls systematically like Lacey and Watkins with people "abusing position of power for their own gain" is some delirious bullshit. What Lacey did isn't just not normal, but abhorrent. He literally preyed upon underage kids, groomed and abused them, at a systemic level. Not just that, he did that and used that as fuel to his lyrics that for literally almost 18 years fooled us into think that there were something deep about what he was writing, but it was nothing but the confessions of a sick pervert with a messiah complex. The cleverest thing about Lacey isn't his lyrics, now they seem quite thin to me. The cleverest and most insane thing is that he got away with this for all this time.

And no, we can't say that Beatles did the same. We can't say that anyone but Lacey, Watkins and others less prominent band members from this scene did the same. We can't level everyone else to Lacey standards. Because that's not how it works. Cheating on someone, being part of an abusive relationship, being addicted to drugs, sleeping around several overage women or what have you is different than sexually assaulting someone. It's different than raping. It's also different than grooming and abusing underage kids. So yeah, thankfully, I feel like I'm pretty safe with my faves.

And if there's ever something like this coming forward against them, you bet that I'd cross them off my list too. No one should get away with the kind of bullshit that Lacey did. But don't you dare to come with this flawed whataboutism logic nonsense.

 

If you think that popular bands throughout the last century were not sexually assaulting and grooming and abusing underage kids all along, I seriously think you are very naive. They just called it something different back then.
