Why would he need to write a statement to the fans?

 

Because they gave him a career and the power we as fans gave him he used to abuse, what now looks like, multiple underage women.

Couldn’t have said it better. Their entire persona post-Deja really sickens me now.

 

Agreed and we should hold him accountable, but the main focus of his statement should be apologising to the underage women he abused and giving them closure. Thinking that us fans deserve an apology just seems sort of unimportant to me, even if we did unknowingly enable a lot of these actions through supporting the band/Jesse before now.

 

Good post, really making me rethink some stuff.

 

“Jesus Christ” is one of the most important songs of my life and just ... damn ... forever tainted. Never say never, just right now don’t see how I’d ever hit play again.

Finally giving Ixora a proper listen now at least and goddamn is it incredible. No idea why it took me this long, but now I have a really awesome replacement for the time being.

 

Against all warnings I decided to check the subreddit to see how bad it actually was. First thing I click has someone say to 'stop being so melodramatic'...yep that's enough internet for today

 

The amount of extreme emotional manipulation for an extended period of time is disturbing. I'm really fearing how many victims of his there actually are.

 

In maybe a weird way, I feel like Science Fiction could be the only album not tainted by this. It seems all the others were written while this shit was happening, but this one was writen through Jesse’s recovery.

 

this statement is pretty much exactly louie's. seems apologetic until you realize how self-centered it is.

at this point i'm just more curious to see if anything happens. tour dates are in a few days, will they happen? what will happen? i'm incredibly intrigued.

 

And he prioritized apologizing to his fans before apologizing to the people he sexually abused, because keeping the fan base that fuels his narcissism is far more important than making amends with the victims whose lives he ruined

 

they are def gonna keep touring i think.

 

I'm very curious as well. It's not a matter of Jesse wanting to continue the shows (which I think he would), but every other member of their crew/the venues would have to be on board

I really hope they do the right thing and cancel tour dates. I will be absolutely appauled if they keep touring, but not surprised. Given the cesspool that is a good portion of their fan base, I'm somewhat doubtful Jessie will be held fully accountable for this. I hope I'm wrong though.

There is no room for this kind of shit in the music scene or anywhere else in society for that matter. If anything comes out about bands I love in the coming weeks, I'l write them off as well. I give no shits about my personal connection to music when it's connected to such horrific shit. This isn't about me, it's about the victims.

 

Clearly enough of their fanbase doesn't care so unless the band members/ venues pull out, I wouldn't be surprised if they finish the announced dates at the least. Beyond that, who knows

 

Yeah the problem is he addressed the fans, not the victims, which really makes it about Brand New continuing to receive support than anything else... and spent the whole time talking about himself.

Narcissism doesn't mean being boastful - all it means is, you make everything about yourself and your own perspective. Sure he sounds remorseful and sure he probably is self loathing about what he's done, you don't have to be self-praising to be a narcissist... but after reading that statement it legit sounds like he thinks he is a victim and not a predator.

He didn't try to establish closure for the victims. He just wants to be perceived differently. He wanted to salvage the fans that are giving him the benefit of the doubt, and tell them he's changed.

Honesty and context is good but: "I am a sex addict, I've always been ashamed of it, I have had multiple therapy sessions, however it is not an excuse that absolves what I did." Could have been one sentence and focused the rest of the statement on his victims.

Multiple paragraphs about it shows that he really tried to word that narrative in a way to get fans to sympathize with him. Even if he outright said things like, "I shouldn't be forgiven" he's pretty good at playing the whole "I suck, pity me" card, just look at his lyrics.

He doesn't need to apologize to us for being a sex addict because that's really not our business, nor does it have anything to do with the fact he didn't follow age limits. That's literally a huge tangent intended to shift the blame and the narrative.

The problem is not that you had unscrupulous sex a lot. The problem is you manipulated people who were too young and naive and impressionable to make self respecting decisions. No one outside of your social circle gives a damn if you cheat a lot or screw a lot of 25 year olds. That's a totally different thing.

 

Obviously it’ll take more time to process all this, but I think I’m done with this band for good. Just thinking of the victim and how Jesse took advantage of the adoration & trust she had as a fan is so gross.

It’s good that he’s gotten professional help and has allegedly taken steps to change, but that doesn’t eliminate the pain his actions have & will probably continue to cause for the victim.

I was always drawn to the darkness in BN’s work. I related to the feelings of shame & self-loathing and it felt cathartic that someone else could verbalize things that I felt but didn’t know how to express. When I was younger I thought I had something in common with Jesse because of that, but now I realize that’s not the case.

Being able to cause that amount of damage to others is just unfathomable to me, and I really don’t have any sympathy for him.

 

anyone have any recommendations of organizations other than RAINN that might be more specific to youth sexual abuse? i'm trying to figure out what i'm doing with my record and i'm trying to figure out options if i decide to sell and donate something

 

I would agree this band saved my life and shaped me from a youth, but after all this I can't even consider listening to them right now, just like how I can't go see a Woody Alan woke anymore. I just have a bad taste in my mouth. Thankfully they're is plenty other great music out right now like Soccer Mommy and Ratboys exc

 

I think I’ve decided that I don’t think it feels right to join in on hating Jesse. But I also don’t think it feels right listening to their music or wearing their merch. Wonder of PMT! will let me cancel my limited pre-order now that this is out?

 

I took my Brand New shirts and boxed them, I am giving them to good will. The CDs are put away in my attic where I put all of my junk I don’t wish to see anymore
