I can see from her Instagram story that his wife is solo working in NYC for a week. How she must've felt getting this news away from her family on a work trip.....I can't even try to fathom. What was a gross fun time for him years ago has become a living pain among all those who favored him and loved him. Have fun living with that conscience.

Abuse is abuse. Some girl on fb just said “how is this abuse?” and basically said calling this abuse is too far and it makes it harder for women who have “actually been sexually abused” to come forward. That is some bullshit gross mindset right there.

I don’t have a lot to say about Jesse himself. I am sadly unsurprised when men, especially one with such a devoted fan base, abuses the power he has over them.

I do want to address the self-loathing in the thread. Please don’t feel guilty that you loved a band. One day we will likely all have a hero exposed as a band person, and what matters is how you address it, how you treat victims, and how you move forward. There’s a lot of garbage in this thread, but also a lot of self introspection and a lot of good and important soul searching. I don’t think I would have seen that a few years ago. It’s okay to grieve for a lost connection. Just don’t get so hung up in it that you can’t find a way to move forward. I hope that makes sense.

I have been thinking of this for a while, but I think the language we use is why we have a hard time teaching men to really look at their behavior. I think when the language immediately goes to sexual predator, or any of the extreme terms, the gut reaction is for the person to defend themselves as not that. instead of looking at their behavior. I know it seems kind of counter intuitive, but I think if you just said 'hey, that behavior is fucked up' and explained why, instead of immediately using what is oftentimes hyperbolic language, you would get more men to look at their behavior and consider changing it. There's a knee jerk reaction to look at the worst of the terms you're being calling, and distance yourself from them, and justify why you're not that, rather than taking an honest look at your behavior not being okay. I really hope this makes some sense.

 

I do think it's men's responsibility to look inwards to why their actions would cause such hyperbolic language though, and see how their actions might be predatory or abusive. As the inherently privileged, it's our responsibility to learn instead of get defensive. But I do get what you're saying.

 

Considering my girlfriend is a victim of some terrible abuse and also a massive fan of Brand New—we've driven from NYC to Montral to see them—I'm really dreading breaking this news to her.

 

Do most social networks aside from YouTube allow you to block comments? I don't think you can block Twitter comments either, can you? Instagram?

 

Instagram lets you. Twitter doesn't show up in the same way, so it's kinda different.
